Omaha Printing buys press, plans to expand work force

Omaha Printing Co. is investing $5 million to buy and refurbish a six-color press and expand its printing plant at 4700 F St., Chief Executive Steve Hayes said Tuesday.

The company plans to add 20 people to its 100-person work force after the 123-ton, 153-foot-long press is up and running in January, Hayes said.

The press, delivered by 12 semitrailer trucks, is being installed now.

The press comes from a printer in Rochester, N.Y., and had been used to print the Neiman Marcus catalog, among other publications, Hayes said. It will expand Omaha Printing's capabilities in printing catalogs and direct-mail projects.

The company also has added sales offices in Dallas and Kansas City, Mo., along with its sales office in Lincoln.

Hayes said he expects the out-of-Omaha share of the company's business to expand from 15 percent currently to 40 percent.

Omaha Printing added 26,000 square feet of plant space, bringing its total to 86,000 square feet. The company also has added mailing services, such as printing addresses on direct-mail pieces

This is good news for the printing industry in Omaha. It seems it has been hit extraordinarily hard over the last 5 years.

While Webco and others have suffered, there are other printers in town that are doing extremely well.
