Super Target for Crossroads Mall

Post by Raraavis »

I was shopping at the Dillards in the Crossroads Mall today and I talked to several employees about the Target store and Dillards future plans. The have been told the Target will definitely be a Super Target with groceries. They didn't know if it was going to be multi-level store.

I asked them if Dillards was leaving the Crossroads and they told me that there were no plans for the store to move soon. However there is a possibility that they will close the Crossroads store and open a new store at Papillion Promenade.

If Dillards leaves Crossroads, it certainly won't be because of any competition from a Super Targer. I really hope they don't pull out, because that will just about kill Crossroads (and it's on life support as it is).

Though if crossroads dies it would be far easier to implement the changes at 72nd and Dodge invisioned by Omaha by Design.

Product? Chapotle and Noodles & Co. both have delicious food (and are both owned by McDonalds, if you can believe it), which gets the UNO kids there every day for lunch or dinner.

Not even just that. There is that Aksarben Place thing being built. I'm all for new constuction ( and it's not out west even) but what are we going to do with a big empty building? Even if that Omaha By Design stuff happens, which I don't care for, it would be years away. I think with some new tenants CR could reclaim some of it's lost luster and appeal.

OK, it should be noted here that really the only reason you don't like Omaha by Design, is because it focuses on other parts of Omaha other than DT. Omaha by Design was developed to create plans for the whole city. For the last 10 years we have focused on DT, and will continue to do so. Our neighborhoods, however, could use the same amount of attention.

Now back to topic, the Omaha by Design plans may have to be implemented to ressurect Crossroads. The few times I have been in CR in the last few months, I think I would find better and safer shopping in downtown Damascus. Let's face it, CR has 2 problems, demographics and its setup is now yesterday. It is an enclosed mall that doesn't have viable parking resources to attract desperate housewives and their retailers. Omaha by Design could attract new markets and trendy retailers to CR.

It's a typical suburban paranoia thing.

I personally think the garage parking at Crossroads is the most convenient retail parking in the metro.

I like Omaha By Design. What I didn't like about that proposal was that it was being sold as the new DT. We already have a "new" DT. If they want to put that stuff there that's fine, but the DT experience should be DT and not at 72nd and Dodge. We need to get more of the suburban people DT.

It's important to keep CR, or another retail center, there at 72nd. This is the modern equivalant of the local grocery and market stores that were in older neighborhoods. Once those corner retailers left the older neighborhoods for areas out west they became blighted.A few have managed to still be around. CR takes up to much space to sit around and be empty. And with all the other places around that area it might be time for CR to go but I think there should be more of an effort to keep it in competition with the area around it and the other malls. We don't want to end up with a Southroads in the middle of Omaha.

The problem with Crossroads is that it is only a mile or so from Westroads. Omaha suffers from the location of its malls, more than anything. Even if Dillards pulls out, Sears and Target could anchor new retail in the mall, although Crossroads as a traditional mall would probably not survive.

I think it makes a lot sense for Younkers to consider Papillion Promenade more so than Dillards. Dillards' three locations in the metro are spread out geographically much better than Younkers' were/are. Now that the Crossroads store closed, Younkers could place a new store in booming Sarpy County that would not cannibalize business from its Westroads store.

It really is too bad that CR is having so many problems. I was in there this past Sunday and really think it has a decent asthetic to it. Target might bring new life to it however. I wonder, maybe they need a change in their target market. Quit trying to have the same stores as every other mall. Find something to set them apart.

I work at Target, and from what some of the managers have said, this is not a Super Target. Blue prints have been made for this location, about a year ago. The orginal plans was to take down the Younkers building and build new. This was then canceled because the building could not be taken down due the the mall docks being located in that location. But the last I've heard on this project was that Target pulled this location from the list. But who knows, maybe the Dillards employees know more about this topic.

"For the last 10 years we have focused on DT"

Well, that's certainly not true, but I definitely agree that, along with downtown, the rest of the "inner-ring" area needs to see attention with new development and a focus on aesthetics.

And, DTO Luv, the OBD proposal at 72nd and Dodge was never billed as "the new downtown" by OBD. That was just bad reporting, as usual, from the OWH. I remember reading that and being a little annoyed. Let's face it, they'r dumb-|expletive| over there.
