Metro's 4th Lowe's coming to Papillion's Market Pointe

Market Pointe... aka Super Walmart and other smaller big boxes. However you look upon this development... bottom line... retail is on the cusp of an explosion in Sarpy County.

The third anchor store in the proposed Market Pointe shopping center near Papillion is a Lowe's.

The home-improvement chain submitted plans this week to build a 138,134-square-foot store at 72nd Street and Giles Road.

The store would sit between a 213,000-square-foot Wal-Mart Supercenter and an 88,000-square-foot Kohl's department store.

Project developer Owen Buckley, president of the R.H. Johnson Co. of Kansas City, Mo., received city council approval for the 74-acre center last July, but the site has been idle since because of an ongoing lawsuit.

Buckley said Tuesday he had been working with Lowe's since last fall. He said the project now has 90 percent of its space committed to new retailers.

Spokespeople for Lowe's did not return calls seeking comment Tuesday.

Preliminary plans call for a 31,659-square-foot garden center and an indoor lumber yard.

A neighborhood group calling itself ProPapillion sued the developer, landowner and the City of Papillion alleging the center was "spot" zoned into an area designated for housing and smaller businesses.

A judge ruled against the neighbors in Sarpy County District Court, and Buckley said he's expecting a decision soon from the Nebraska Court of Appeals.

"We're looking forward to getting this project under way soon," he said.

Are the buildings at Market Pointe going to have any sort of special aesthetic treatments, or are they all going to look like generic Lowes and Kohl's and such?

I know the Wal-Mart was being held to some of the highest standards in the country. I think the entire development is going to use quite a bit of brick-looking material, but I can't find the picture at the moment.

This is going up on the SE corner of 72nd & Giles. There are also developments going up on the SW corner (Village Inn & Fareway) and NW corner (good looking strip mall & homes).

Papillion Promenade is running out of major tenants to entice to the development. I wonder who their letters of intent are with? Best Buy? Linens and Things? Hy-Vee? Bed, Bath and Beyond? Costco? Younkers? Von Maur? Sears?

As a soon-to-be resident of Papillion, I'm very excited about a Lowe's! That's great competition for Home Depot, and the closest Menards is in Bellevue. I also welcome Kohl's and Wal-Mart with open arms.

projectman, you may want other stores, but Sarpy (especially Papillion) is hurting for good retail. The closest Kohl's and Lowes are near 72nd & Dodge.

How many Lowe's, Home Depots and Walmarts do we need?

1 for every 100 people. They use the same goals the Omaha Police use.

I hope they are being held to some of the highest design standards in the country because the ones we have now are |expletive|. I was in Seattle a few weeks ago and saw a Walmart that was a 10 times better looking building than any Big Box Store we have in Omaha.

Supposedly the design standards will meet or exceed anything else in Omaha. Not that that is saying much.

Please no! That is too far! For crying out loud, Wal*mart and other big box stores are building 6-8 miles apart from their own stores. We are coming to the point where you have a Sprawl*mart (or Target, or Kmart, or Shopko, whatever) a maximum of 5 miles from you, in any direction. Is it really asking too much of us to drive 10-15 miles to a big box store?

If we truly want the convenience of closer shopping, we shouldn't have let all these big box stores taken business away from the smaller businesses in the first place.

If I wanted to live in a small town, I'd live in one. Part of the benefits of a city and suburbs is that I don't have to drive 10 - 15 miles to get what I want!
