I think it is official that Target is going into the old Younkers at Crossroads. In the Building Permits section of today's OWH, Target has an interior remodel permit for 7200 Dodge.

Glad to see the space is going to be used.
How much does this affect the plausibility of the Omaha by Design vision for the mixed use development in that area? I realize that the project - as envisioned - was likely a pipe dream, but that doesn't mean the concept couldn't live on.

This is great news. A little off topic, but in the same section there is a permit for "Oak View Plaza North, 3103 Oak View Drive, interior remodel, $500,000". Where is this? Is this the old best buy?

It is actually pretty amazing that Crossroads is 44 years old. I don't think there are too many enclosed malls around, which are this old and still have some of the tenants Crossroads has. Simon hasn't done too bad a job keeping it updated. This part of town could actually benefit more from a Target than a Younkers.
Omaha World Herald wrote:
Target still won't tell plans at Crossroads
Target isn't talking about a building permit it obtained for an estimated $2.8 million in renovation at 72nd and Dodge Streets.
Phone calls to Target were not returned Monday.
A spokeswoman for Simon Property Group of Indianapolis, which owns Crossroads Mall, declined to comment on whether Target plans to locate to the mall in the space formerly occupied by Younkers.
"I really can't confirm anything," said Billie Scott of Simon Property Group. "When we're working with a tenant to potentially come to the center we defer to whatever tenant that might be to make their own announcement. . . . That is our policy in deference to our department stores and other major retailers."
In March 2004, Aimee Sands, a spokeswoman for the Minneapolis-based chain of discount department stores, said Target was considering a store at the Crossroads.
Target has seven stores in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area. The closest to Crossroads is at 360 N. Saddle Creek Road.
A spokeswoman for the City of Omaha Building Department said Monday that no paperwork regarding the building permit was on file because it had been sent out of the office for microfilming. She said she didn't know when the permit was obtained.
Younkers, one of the anchors of the 44-year-old mall, closed in January. The other anchor stores are Dillard's, which has been at Crossroads since a major remodeling project in the summer of 1988, and Sears, one of the original stores.
The future of Sears is uncertain due to the recent merger of its parent company with Kmart. Officials of the newly formed company have said they may emphasize stand-alone stores rather than mall locations.
Several mall tenants next to the former Younkers space said they have been told they would be relocating. Among the businesses are G I Tailors & Cleaners and Regis Salon.
A U.S. Postal Service station also is located in the area. Calls to the Postal Service's media relations office in Omaha seeking comment on the possibility of the station's relocating were not returned Monday afternoon

I noticed that on the east side of the old younkers building there is about 3 or 4 what looks to be some kind of HVAC units on the ground and one "storage" truck. I thought it was going to be more than an "inside remodel"
As far as the petsmart at oakview, what is by the old nave, petsmart or pet co.

It seems like talk is centered on a Target going there. I wish it was a Super Target, or their Greatland Target store. The paper makes it seem more like an interior remodel but if they are moving the neighboring tenants that sounds more like a full scale rebuild to me.

It seems like they may be building a one level store. I still believe that it will be a Super Target.

Well if the Target under construction at Merle Hay in Des Moines is any indication...it is a regular Target as far as we know. They also tore out a two story Younkers (it moved to the Famous Barr location at the mall) and replaced it with a one level store which is supposed to open later this summer.

Channel 6 reported that once Target opens at Crossroads in the summer of 2006, their Saddle Creek store will close. Inevitable, I suppose, but a blow for that neighborhood. Maybe Shopko could go in on Saddle Creek.

Well DTO - part of Crossroads will be demolished.
OWH wrote: Target to build at Crossroads, close Saddle Creek store
Target Stores Inc., will demolish the former Younkers space at Crossroads Mall and build a 116,000-square-foot store that is scheduled to open in summer 2006.
The Target at 360 N. Saddle Creek Road - the company's first store in Nebraska - will close when the new store opens, a company spokewoman said Tuesday.
Demolition of the former Younkers, on the southeast end of Crossroads at 72nd and Dodge Streets, will start "fairly shortly," said Aimee Sands, spokeswoman for the Minneapolis-based retailer.
The discount retailer has obtained a building permit for an estimated $2.8 million in renovations at the 44-year-old shopping mall.
Sands said she did not have specific details on the construction schedule.
"We're still pretty far out," Sands said. "Many details about the project are still being worked out."
Among those details are whether the store would have more than one level and be accessible from the mall.
The Crossroads store will be a traditional Target, as opposed to a SuperTarget, but a new prototype, Sands said. It will have an expanded grocery section, a mother-and-baby department and an "entertainment destination" featuring electronics, sporting goods, toys, books, movies and music.
The new store will be more accessible and easier for customers to shop in, Sands said.
"We want to present our guests with a fresh design and great shopping experience."
Target has seven stores in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro area.
The 125,000-square-foot Saddle Creek store was the retailer's entry into the Omaha and Nebraska market when it opened in April 1972.
Younkers, which had 204,000 square feet of space, closed in January. It was one of the original anchors of the mall. The remaining anchor stores are Dillard's, which has been at Crossroads since a major remodeling project in the summer of 1988, and Sears.

Yeah - moving a 125k building into a new 116K building after demolishing a 204K building. "Among those details are whether the store would have more than one level and be accessible from the mall." And it might not be accessible from the Mall. This is not good news. This is a major disappointment.jhuston wrote:Sounds like a single story store... albeit with a new format.

It's disappointing they're closing the Saddle Creek location (how long will that Panera hang around under those cirumstances?). Hopefully another retailer, say Shopko, will fill the void. You talk about your absence of a downtown retailer... how about nothing east of 72nd? I think it's time the city of Omaha start looking seriously at Destination Midtown not so much in terms of privately funded, visual aesthetics now... but in terms of publicly funded, economic revitalization. It's time to start putting those Elkhorn property taxes to good use.
I'm not really too bothered by the single story Target thing... and I would be HIGHLY surprised if they didn't make it accessible to the mall... they'd be missing out on considerable foot traffic. What advantages would there be in not making it accessible??

Target was going to move into an old, historic building here in Uptown Dallas, yet thanks to swift but sure community involvement that fell through. They too were going to demolish it for their McSupercenter.UNOstudent wrote:as for target, my friend told me that they are tearing parts, if not all, of younkers down, but we'll see what happens

(They might as well use the wrecking ball on the rest of Crossroads, so much for the idea of something unique and appealing...)
I am curious to see what this new "prototype store" consists of. I am really disappointed at the prospects of this being a single level Target...Especially after seeing the appeal of the multiple-level Target in downtown Minneapolis. But, I am sure it will fit right in with the eye-candy that the 72nd & Dodge corridor provides (50ft rusting store signs, billboards, and miscellaneous parking lots - paved and gravel). Omaha by Design is correct. For being our main "drag", the Crossroads area doesn't leave a very impressive image of our city, the use of land between 84th and 72nd is absolutely atrocious. That is a different topic, however. ;)

On Fox news they talked with a lady from the Destination Midtown group and she was saying they would like to get another grocery store or everday retailer in the area. She was alos hopefull that the area wouldn't sit empty long because it's in a good location.

We need only look east to see what a Target conected to a mall looks like... Mall of the Bluffs.
Of course they will conect to the mall. Traffic is too important to cut it off like a stand alown store.
They are moving into a three story space. The second story is barely connected to the second level. I dought we will see two levels.
Some offices but centraly located storage looks smart.

If its not one of those fancy two story ones, I will pray every day that they go out of business and loose millions in investments while they go down. They need to rebuild that hole area anyway, right Omaha by Design?

As for the old store on Saddle Creek? Albertsons dominates that end... If I was Home Depot or Menards I would be thinking open market in a fixup district...

It would kill Ace Hardware, but really both Home Depot and Menards could take Target and Ace over.
The closest compeditor would be Lowes... that location could go down with a Saddle Creek location... Older neiborhoods win in that race.

Let's get a TRADER JOES!!!!!!!!!
Anyway.....Minneapolis (Target's home town) has at least one multi story target in the downtown area, so hopefully they'll do the same at Crossroads. I would think they need to as I can't really imagine anyway that they could build a one story building there.

This all makes perfect sense to me..
Open a Best Buy at VP (168th and Dodge) and close the Oak View BB approx 6 miles away (even further for the Best Buy-less Sarpy county residents..at least for now until the Promenade project is completed)..
Open a Target at Crossroads and close the Saddle Creek Store..Make people living on N 30th-42nd street drive 5+ more miles..
Honestly, who does the market analysis for these 'big box' stores as it relates to the Omaha metro..A pre-school graduate??..
..

i think that w/ the saddle creek target closing, that makes a DT target a more strategic location especially w/ creighton and more residents moving/living down there. you can say what you want to say, but my friend told me that target was looking at a spot in DT omaha (between the Q and CU), but they wanted to wait for more residents and better financial incentives before building a store there.

How about Saddle Creek records taking over that sight? It's not too far from the other location, and has more parking.

I'm betting that Best Buy will open a store in Papillion Promenade. It makes a lot of sense, with the relocation of the Oakview store to Village Pointe. Plus, RED is/was involved in both lifestyle centers.
