Google Fiber flags Omaha for high-speed internet service
Item goes before City Council next week; construction could begin in 2023
Google Fiber wants to provide Omaha residents and businesses with its high-speed internet. According to an announcement from the mayor’s office on Wednesday, the City Council will consider a license agreement with Google Fiber in October. The City Council will hear its first reading on the item during its regular meeting on Tuesday. Construction of the fiber optic network would begin in 2023, making service available as segments of the network are completed, the release states. “New and expanding technologies are important to our city’s growth, to attract new residents and new business,” Mayor Jean Stothert in the release. “Our role is always to help businesses locate and grow in Omaha. Google Fiber is a perfect fit for the growing tech sector of our economy.”
Omaha would be the company’s 19th market. Several of the previous installations have occurred in cities around the Midwest, from Denver to Des Moines and Chicago to Kansas City, where it’s been in place for a decade. But the company pulled out of Louisville in 2019 after an experimental installation process failed there. “Fast, reliable internet is a necessity for everyone in today’s world,” according to Rachel Merlo, head of Google Fiber’s government and community affairs in the central region. “We’re excited to start connecting Omaha residents to whatever they need and want to do online.” Google is also building a data center in northwest Omaha — their third in the area; it already had data centers in Papillion and Council Bluffs.

Omaha city officials preparing to consider license agreement with Google Fiber
Google Fiber appears one step closer to coming to Nebraska's largest city.
OMAHA, Neb. -- Google Fiber appears one step closer to coming to Nebraska's largest city. In an announcement last month, Google Fiber stated that it was planning on coming to Nebraska, with Omaha expected to be added to the growing number of cities offering its high-speed internet service to residential and small business customers. The Omaha City Council will consider the license agreement with Google Fiber next month, according to a statement issued Wednesday by Mayor Jean Stothert. The proposed agreement allows the company to install, maintain and operate a fiber optic network in the public right-of-way. “New and expanding technologies are important to our city’s growth, to attract new residents and new business,” Stothert said. “Our role is always to help businesses locate and grow in Omaha. Google Fiber is a perfect fit for the growing tech sector of our economy.” The proposed agreement includes requirements for construction permits, notice to property owners before construction work begins, bonds and insurance. It will be in effect for ten years and then automatically renew thereafter. “Fast, reliable internet is a necessity for everyone in today’s world,” said Google Fiber representative Rachel Merlo. “We’re excited to start connecting Omaha residents to whatever they need and want to do online.” The fiber network is currently in design; construction is expected to begin in 2023, with service available as segments of the network are completed. In August, Google Fiber announced it would focus expansion on five additional states, including Nebraska. Omaha will be the company’s 19th market. The license agreement will be on the City Council agenda for first reading on October 4. Google is building a data center near State Street and Blair High Road in Omaha. It is their third data center in the area, with the others located in Papillion and Council Bluffs.

Competition is good and all but nowadays Google's 2 gig speed max is getting passed by others. Around here Comcast's is 1.2 gig and ATT's is 5 gig. We have Comcast & pay 80 a month for 1.2

Re: Google Fiber Optic
Nope. Gateway included & a flex box for the tv for apps. 2 year price guarantee & no contract. It's a cant lose idea. May switch to ATT for the faster speed but I'm not sure its worth it. We've all got phones, tablets, notebooks, desktops, smart plugs, alexas, and on and on. Nobody seems to have a problem with buffering.nebugeater wrote: Thu Sep 29, 2022 12:02 amany data caps?Bob from Omaha wrote: Wed Sep 28, 2022 11:47 pm Competition is good and all but nowadays Google's 2 gig speed max is getting passed by others. I just checked. Cox in omaha has a 1gb plan for $65 with a 1 year contract. 1.25 TB data. Sounds like a great price. Didn't say if the gateway was included
Also Centurylink has 940 mb, equipment included, 940 up and down, no contract, no cap, etc. $70. also not bad

CenturyLink has a special section in their Terms and Conditions for Omaha. I'm guessing they are trying to get people before Google comes and raise the prices later.
CenturyLink is currently charging me $45 for 30Mbps but offering 200 Mbps for $30 or 500 Mbps for $50. Their customer service is terrible but worth the risk to upgrade.
Fiber Gigabit up to 940 Mbps for Omaha, NE Only
...Limit one offer per location during a 12-month period. Offer may not be transferable or stackable with certain promotions. CenturyLink may change or cancel offer at its sole discretion without notice.

I just switched to Quantum Fiber (CenturyLink) a few months ago. As of right now I pay $60/mo with free modem and routers included. I was getting constant outages with Cox but so far I have had zero with Quantum. The speeds are 3x faster than what I was paying before so was no brainer

Any problems Cox wants you to check your connection to the wall.

Re: Google Fiber Optic
I can appreciate the sentiment. Comcast outsources its customer service. I've found a workaround. At the automated menu if I yell "Agent" at the top of my lungs it usually connects me with the customer rentention department in Dallas and they help me. It doesn't work every time but I'd say about 75% I don't have a problem with people from Asia but they have to stick like glue to a script. They don't understand idioms and barely understand many common English terms. Anyway, those with Cox might give it a try.

Yes I try hard to not vent at customer service people on the phone, even when “Mary” and “Roger” speak with thick Indian accents. They are doing the best they can. Who I wish I could vent at are the corporate big wigs who outsource all of the customer service departments overseas. But of course those people are never at the other end of your phone conversation.

Re: Google Fiber Optic
I agree 100%. I'd love to sentence the big wigs to a month of only outsourced service people for everything they do. Perhaps then they'd consider that when they look at upping their quarterly profits.nativeomahan wrote: Fri Oct 07, 2022 7:11 pm Yes I try hard to not vent at customer service people on the phone, even when “Mary” and “Roger” speak with thick Indian accents. I think every company will try outsourcing, until they realize the cultural differences cause problems.

I don’t think they care. The executive clowns jump ship between companies now, and so the long-term problems don’t affect them.S.O.Boy wrote: Fri Oct 07, 2022 8:48 pm I think every company will try outsourcing, until they realize the cultural differences cause problems.

City council paves way for Google Fiber in Omaha
Google Fiber construction could start in central Omaha as early as 2023.
Homeowners should look out for construction notices.
Google Fiber is lining up an arrival into the Omaha market. City council approved a right-of-way agreement with Google Fiber on Tuesday, which permits Google to install, maintain, operate and control a fiber optic infrastructure for broadband internet. ‘We would get to work on our design plans and, in 2023, start construction in the community of Omaha," said Rachel Merlo, head of government and community affairs for Google Fiber.
Representatives say it plans to start laying fiber underground in the central Omaha geographic region, but couldn't provide an exact address. "And that will be the base in which we can build out from, like a spider web," Google Fiber's Andy Simpson said. Google says it could take four to five years to build its network across the city.

This is awesome! It will really bring in some good competition for ISPs which should really help boost speeds. They are working on 100 gigs and hit 20 gigs in a test in KC just recently.

Google begins laying fiber in Aksarben, it will take 5 years to complete all Omaha but the end result will allow speeds from 1, 2, 5, 8 gigs in the near future.
