City council to award naming rights for Gretna Crossing Park

GRETNA, Neb. — By this fall, the Gretna community hopes to have access to a new water park, baseball field, dog park and more. On Tuesday, the city is set to take another step forward on Gretna Crossing Park. When the vision was laid out for Gretna Crossing, Gretna Mayor Mike Evans said voters approved a half percent increase in sales tax and an approximately $10 million bond from the school district. "So the voters approved the initiative in May [2020] and we started work pretty much the end of that year," Evans said.

With the city council expected to approve naming rights Tuesday night for the new recreation complex, those deals will bring in a combined $615 thousand over 10 years. That's because sponsoring the massive complex, Evans says, is expected to come with a lot of attention. "And that's a neat thing about this park. It's not one thing. It's not just ball fields. It's a community park. So there's something for the community. We have dog parks, nature trails, frisbee golf, you know, the 18-course frisbee golf. Then we have the aquatic center with the lazy river, the slides, the zero entry, the ball field, soccer, baseball, softball," he said.

Evans saying they're using some of the money to build trails and roads that will connect the sports complex to the outlet mall. "By completing this kind of vision, we're going to have a place that a lot of people are going to want to stay in. And instead of leave the state, let's keep them here," he said. The $55 million, the 155-acre park is set to open in September.

I realize there's a lot more to the park than the nifty outdoor aquatic center. However, there is something a little amusing about waiting until the pools are all closed for the season to reveal the new pool. lol

Gretna Crossing welcomes new YMCA on opening day

The City of Gretna is expanding with the addition of the Gretna Crossing Park and the new YMCA on-site. Doors opened at 5:00 a.m. welcoming hundreds of new members. "It's just been a steady stream of new members finishing up their membership, getting their pictures taken, getting their final tour around the building, kind of seeing where things are and just getting settled into their new space," said Michelle Hannah, the senior membership director at the YMCA.

Gretna looks to build new community complex near YMCA

GRETNA, Neb. — The city of Gretna continues to develop as the population grows. This week, the city closed the sale on a 35-acre plot of land near the YMCA in hopes of building a community complex. The complex would include a new city hall, library and community center. The city is still in the beginning stages of the project, but Mayor Mike Evans hopes it will be completed by 2027.

He wants the complex to be a place for people to gather. He said the location of the land is perfect because it sits near South 213th Street and would connect the community complex to the ballpark. "We can really kind of plant our flag and create a central hub for our town," Evans said. He said the new building will also create much-needed space. "Our staff has no place to work or meet with people, and so we'll have to eventually lease space if we don't build something," Evans said.
