Fremont Area Veterans Coalition honors heroes with flag boxes

FREMONT, Neb. (KOLN) - In Fremont, it’s common for businesses and neighborhoods to show support for their veterans with red and white stripes. But when the community loses these servicemen and women, their family is gifted a folded American flag.

The Fremont Area Veterans Coalition is a nonprofit that makes sure families have a shadow box to display it in. “So those memories can be passed down to generations,” said David Rangeloff, executive director of the Fremont Area Veterans Coalition. “Loved ones down the road can say hey, this family member served in the military. We’re honoring their service through pictures awards and generations can see that service of that family member.” Rangeloff served for 20 years in the U.S. Army. When he retired in 2017, he and other Army veterans started the Fremont Area Veterans Coalition.

Recent storms delay reopening of Fremont’s South Bell Street viaduct

The orange barricades are still up at Fremont’s South Bell street viaduct. It’s located Southeast of the city and was closed in May of 2023 for major renovations. “Cars have to go through a different route to get out of this town where they used to be able to go out of that street and go straight through the viaduct,” said Peter O’Connell with Expressway Food Mart. O’Connell manages the business that’s been in Fremont for 15 years. He told 6 News when the bridge closed down a year ago, it shut down traffic and turned down the area’s noise.

“A little bit on our business sales we do have a lot of our main accounts that come for our gas,” O’Connell said. “We noticed like our food sales have dropped and all that.” The city closed down the bridge because they started to notice it was rotating off its support base. “We needed to get that stabilized, so however long that would have taken it wouldn’t have issues with the bridge collapsing,” Justin Zetterman, Fremont Public Works director said. Zetterman said they’ve worked to stabilize the bridge and they anticipated to open it back up two days ago. However, with all the recent storms, it’s taken them time to get people to complete the work left to do.
