Insect Discussion

Post by Busguy2010 »

Couldn't find a general insect discussion.

Of all things to find in a house on this date, he must have snuck in with me. A boxelder bug. I guess they're incredibly resilient. I saw him from afar and I was aw heck naw. Got a napkin to kill it, and when I was close enough, I realized it was just a boxelder. I even endearingly said "aw, you're just a boxelder. I coaxed him onto my hand and escorted him over to my indoor plants, as I'm sure theres food for him there. A win win. Long as he doesn't bug me in my sleep, we're cool.

The funny part is I was ready to kill the |expletive| out of it before I actually knew what it was, but once I identified it, I said oh, you can stay. In warmer weather I send them outside. But now have a symbiotic relationship with a bug.

What makes boxelders the golden retriever of bugs? house centipedes, wolf spiders, silver fish are all kill on sight for me, but on the flip side I've let a praying mantis squat with me until it got wings. What makes certain bugs scary or not scary to you?

Nothing that $Deity has created scares me, but to your point, boxelders get thrown outside, back into the foodchain. Haven't seen any silverfish lately but I'm predisposed to letting them be, they're good guys. Same with spiders.

Flies get swatted, although the dogs can't handle the sound.

One morning as I was getting out of the shower, and before I put my contacts in, I stepped on the floor mat and felt it wriggle. Instantly moved my foot away to see a house centipede crawl away as quickly as possible. The thought still sends a shiver down my spine as a really uncomfortable feeling.

Alternatively, I always name my winter basement spider that lives behind the sink. It has a job and deserves respect.
