Family Fare (108th and Q St)

Is closing come March 13th. Was in there today and they had beer/wine sections all consolidated down to few racks and marked 25% off. Asked the manager that was running the checkouts about it and he said "They're shutting us down, we're all out of a job come March 13th."

Interesting ... that means the HyVee at 96th & Q is the only grocery store around for several miles.

When I lived in Omaha, the FF at 84th and Giles was my go-to store. However, 108th and Q did not have the same selection and no one there could explain why. I did notice that 108th did not use the space provided to stock more lines--the place always seemed empty. The entire Empire Park and the strip malls along 108th seem...distressed.

I wonder what the commercial real estate market looks like in the area between 108th and I-80, L to Q. We've discussed the crack hotels previously, but the commercial buildings don't seem like destination real estate.

Getting back to grocery, interesting to notice that in Houston, it's H-E-B, Kroger (both premium, full-price) and Wal-Mart. No chain has filled the niche that FF and before that, No Frills did in Omaha. Could it be that the 'bargain-basement' market no longer exists?

I would hope for those that live nearby it could get another grocer. If Bakers is serious about business in Omaha considering they’re building the two new locations, perhaps they should take it over.

The Family Fare was not well kept and looked like it could have closed any day.

I work somewhat close to this area and it’s surprising to me at how dilapidated it’s become. Obviously there’s the |expletive| hole hotel that is being fought over in court. Across the street there was the other hotel that shut down due to trafficking and other problems.

I feel the bad hotels/motels have been the biggest contributors to that area’s downfall. I feel the subdivisions in the area are pretty well maintained.

Your best bet for a grocer here would probably be Aldi taking a portion of the box.

Sad to see it close. It was in bad shape and the interior smelled as well. The peeps in that area either go to Walmart on 132nd and L or HyVee on 96th and Q. When that store was built neither the Walmart or HyVee existed.

The older part of Millard has a rapidly increasing Latino population. Just look at the number of authentic Mexican and Central American restaurants that have popped up around there. This would probably make a good location for another Supermercado Nuestra Familia.

The peeps in that area either go to Walmart on 132nd and L or HyVee on 96th and Q.

There's also the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 96th & Giles.

The holding company that operates Piggly Wiggly bought SpartanNash last year. While insomniac doomscrolling the Nextdoor cesspool hoping to see someone complaining about dumpsters being emptied overnight, I saw an unfounded rumor that Omaha stores will be converted to them.

Yes this is spot on. Dillon's (Kroger) is re-entering the KC market and their new store will be 100,000 SF. They also opened a new store in Lawrence KS (and closed one nearby that it replace). Went from 60,000 SF to 90,000. They definitely seem to be moving to larger stores going forward.

I feel like if they wanted to, they could get pretty close to that 100k Sq/Ft mark by expanding the store to the attached strip mall to the north and south.

How about the No Frills in Fremont that converted to a Bakers? It was awhile ago, but there's always people at the Bakers in Fremont.

Was it a No Frills? I thought it had been a Rainbow Foods store, like the Baker's on Saddlecreek, Galvin Road in Bellevue, and the now Nebraska Humane Society building. There was also a location next to Walmart when it was on South 84th Street in Papillion. That one became a Hobby Lobby, as did the one in Millard. Baker's parent company at the time, Fleming bought out Rainbow foods in the mid-90s and either converted the stores to Baker's or sold them off. The store in Fremont was acquired at the same time.

Explains why I feel these stores look like a Hinky Dinky! I've never been impressed with Family Fare stores. And the whole True Value hardware inside of the one on 144th is goofy... especially considering there's an Ace Hardware 3 blocks to the east.

My Fleming Foods history is fuzzy, but that sounds about right in terms of how stores they owned in the area progressed name wise. I remember Festival Foods having obnoxious radio ads back in the 90's.

Bag'n Save/No Frills bought all the former Albertson's because Albertson's refused to sell any to Kroger. Kroger in turn bought 120th & W Center, 72nd & Ames and Twin Creek from Bag'n Save/No Frills. All of them pretty new buildings. Oddly enough, the people who were running B&S/NF at the time were all former Baker's guys -- Lonnie Eggers, Bill Brewer, Bob Trant & Donnie Wilde. And all four of them were my store managers at Baker's Spring Valley at one point, in that order.

The Bakers in Fremont was a Food 4 Less when I was growing up there in the '90s. I had friends in high school who worked there. Don't know if it was ever anything else before it became Bakers.

It's really unfortunate, too, because this area should not be considered blighted or significantly run down. I don't know why this ever started its decline, TBH. But I could list probably 10 businesses in the immediate vicinity that have let themselves go over the past 10-20 years.

It's really unfortunate, too, because this area should not be considered blighted or significantly run down. I don't know why this ever started its decline, TBH. But I could list probably 10 businesses in the immediate vicinity that have let themselves go over the past 10-20 years.

Q to L had, (to my memory) which are now gone, Hardees, Wendy's, and Winchells. I'm not sure on the timing of which was first. The Hardees was taken for the new/larger Bucky's. Wendy's was about where Jimmy's Egg is. Both went to L Street Marketplace. A short lived Sonic. Godfathers is now Cane's. That |expletive|-hole hotel should have been dozed 10 years ago. The Alberson's was nice. I don't think any upgrades were done to the store once Bag 'n Save took it over. Same ceiling and floor tiles.

The area as a whole has been in slow decline for years.
