Jurgens was in Omaha to mark the opening of the 12th Hy-Vee in the Omaha area, at 156th Street and West Maple Road. The store opens today at 6 a.m.

Hy-Vee has the second most stores in the Omaha area, behind Baker's, which has 15. In response to Jurgens, a Baker's spokeswoman pointed out that the chain had acquired three former Albertsons stores last year.

"We're not going anywhere," said Su-Ella McKinzie.

Two possible expansions Jurgens mentioned: Drug Town, Hy-Vee's stand-alone drug store chain that has only two locations in the Omaha area; and in Sarpy County, where the company has no grocery stores.

Hy-Vee opened a store at 180th and Q Streets in 2003 and is building stores at 51st and Center Streets and at the Mall of the Bluffs to replace existing supermarkets.

"We see the growth in the west of Omaha to be very significant . . . we also have looked at the south a great deal," said Jurgens. "We'll continue to build new stores as the market expands."

Hy-Vee, which is based in West Des Moines, Iowa, had sales of $4.6 billion last fiscal year, up about 8.3 percent, Jurgens said. He said he expects sales to grow again this fiscal year.

The new Hy-Vee cost $13 million to build. It will be open 24 hours a day and employ 418, 80 of them full time.

It has a drive-through pharmacy, a Starbucks, a food court, a wine and liquor store, and an area of the store devoted to health foods. A gas station on the property is scheduled to open next month.

The store's nearest competitors are SuperTarget and Baker's which are both at 132nd Street and West Maple Road; Bag 'N Save, 156th and Blondo Streets; and the Wal-Mart Supercenter being built at 168th Street and West Maple Road.

Jurgens said Hy-Vee, which is employee owned, has an advantage over publicly traded grocery companies, such as Baker's, which is owned by Kroger Co., because it does not have to worry about pleasing shareholders in the short-term.

"We like being private because it allows us to make our decisions based on the long-term interests of the company and the customers," Jurgens said.

...on 180th and Pacific. There were plans for one about 10 years ago, but they died down, but it sounds like they are closing on buying the farm on 180th and Pacific.

Yup thats what I've heard. Aparently with Spring Ridge Plaza Phase II and the new dental office and the possibility of a new Catholic Church around that area (another rumor), this seems like a prime time to get things rolling again. Think a church in the are doesn't sound like a good reason to build, think again, as an employee, I can tell you that almost all our sunday business is because of the "church rush" (basically everyone stopping in after church to buy food).

The Episcopal church owns the property south of Pacific on 178th. There have been signs on the property there in the past saying that a church would built there.

I think the development that Hy-Vee has built at 156th and Maple is very nice. Hopefully something as nice or better would be built there.

I was on the phone and KFAB's Grow Omaha minute was on int he background and I did not catch everything. Did I hear right that HyVee is moving to build on some land that they have had for some time near 180th & Center? Did anyone here to or can they confirm? If this is correct, where near this intersection is this property? The best fit I could see is to the West of Lowes.

I did not hear it yet, but I would guess they are talking about the new one in CB at the old Omaha Standard site? They CB city council approved it this week.

They do own the land on the NE corner of 180 and Pacific.

Thanks, that makes since. 180th & Center is too close to their 180th & Q location IMO. I know they were talking about west O and the CB location came to mind but the conversation I did hear steared me away frm that one that is anounced.

I'll believe it when I see it. Hy-Vee has talked about building at 180th & Pacific for nearly 15 years now. Heck, the Baker's at 175th & Center is nearly 10 years old now.

I think we'll see Wall Street Tower open and people moving in, and another tower downtown under construction, with no progress on a Hy-Vee at 180th & Pacific.

Is there another grocer other than Hyvee which has even invested in building a new store this decade (Albertson's shuffling doesn't count) ?

(okay, Aldi's, Fareway, Whole Foods... but do they really count? Omaha doesn't really have a decent selection of mainstream grocers... does it?)

My guesses would be Bakers on 175th and Center, although it could have been longer than a decade.

In the past 5 years, Hy Vee has opened 180th and Q, 156th and Maple, Papillion, and rebuilt stores on 51st and Center and Mall of the Bluffs. That is not including this new store on Pacific. I am sure if you break it down to the past 8 years, there are a few more...Oak View or 108th and Fort maybe?

They must really like the Omaha market. Pretty impressive what they have done in this market just 20 some years. Especially with the dominance Baker's had on this market.

HyVee @ 180th & Q opened in 2003. That is when we started to shop at HyVee again. On 156 & Maple I believe it was 2005.

The Bakers @ 170th & Center was being built when I moved to Gretna in 1999 and opened in late 1999 or early 2000. Shopped there a lot until HyVee opened.

I can't recall when Krogers acquired Bakers... but I'm pretty sure they haven't built any new locations since.

156 and Dodge is the News Baker's built store, all new stores since then are bought locations, no new construction.

When they relocated the Hy Vee from what is not the Amazing Pizza Machine to Oak View, they both a Stonybrook store and Oak View. They decided on Oak View and sold their land to Super Saver. They have regretted it ever since.

I have heard that they have an option on property off of 370 near I80. This would be to the N of where Walmart is planning to build along 370.

It was announced well over a year ago that there would be a new HYVEE on the NW corner of 180th & PACIFIC, just south of ELKHORN RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL...
but the little white house is still there & nothing else is going on...
anyone heard anything???

Yes, HyVee is still working with the City on a plan that can get approved. There are also still several neighbors that think that there should be no commercial across from the school.

When they relocated the Hy Vee from what is not the Amazing Pizza Machine to Oak View, they both a Stonybrook store and Oak View. They decided on Oak View and sold their land to Super Saver. They have regretted it ever since.

Actually this is a little bit incorrect. In 1992 or 1993 HyVee built the OakView Store to replace the one they had at 144th and U street. It is now a Carpet store or something like that. It was a lateral move from U Street to OakView and I think there was a week or two timeframe when both were open.

They did not own the land behind the store that Supersaver is now located on. I worked there during that time and it was never mentioned as a possible site when they chose Oakview.

I don't see how anyone would want to put a mega grocery store in at 144th and Stonybrook. That intersection, while improved since the expansion, is a cluster of traffic that would only become unimaginable if there was a grocery built there, with the Millard South traffic, the Hwy 50 traffic and the neighborhood traffic that converges right there everyday.

Actually that Hy-Vee was announced nearly 15 years ago. Maybe we should start a contest or a poll to see what gets built first: Wall Street Tower, the amusement park, or this Hy-Vee.
