Paradise at Regency is state's 1st

Paradise Bakery & Cafe, an upscale eatery offering freshly made baked goods, opened its first Nebraska location Monday at Regency Court in Omaha.

The restaurant, located near the mall's southeast entrance, is the first of four locations planned for the Omaha market, said Michael McDermott, franchise owner.

He said a second bakery cafe is to open next summer at Village Pointe, 168th Street and West Dodge Road. McDermott added that Council Bluffs, Lincoln and other parts of Nebraska are being looked at as future sites.

The chain, based in Aspen, Colo., operates more than 30 restaurants in seven states. Paradise Bakery's menu includes soups, garden and pasta salads and sandwiches.

The 5,200-square-foot Omaha restaurant, which employs about 45 full- and part-time workers, is the chain's largest location. The standard size of a restaurant is about 4,500 square feet.

The Regency location can accommodate 140 inside and 60 more at a patio inside the mall and outdoors.

McDermott also is the founder of Kona Grill, a restaurant chain offering "contemporary American cuisine spiced with Island accents." A Kona Grill is scheduled to open this fall at Village Pointe. The restaurant's menu will feature sushi, appetizers, salads, noodle dishes and entrees.

McDermott has brought in outside investors for Omaha's Kona, which will be the sixth location for the chain. The chain, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., has restaurants in Scottsdale, Las Vegas and Kansas City, Mo.

"I've been around restaurants and know location is key to the success of a concept," he said. "I noticed Omaha was a good market to come to and there was room for more competition."

Congrats, Omaha! Paradise is a great place; my office gets a lot of food from there and they have fantastic sandwiches and I really like their cinnamon rolls. But you need to get one of them downtown!
