New Restaurant Open on Abbot Drive

Post by ItsAllAboutMe »

"The Hollywood Diner" opened on Monday. The food is great the atmosphere and the menu are fun. Very cool place & nice looking too.
The owners found the building in Colorado, the business was closed so they purchased the building & brought back here. I talked to the owner & he said they now plan to open 4 more in Omaha. They apparently have found other diners that were not in use and have decided to move them here too. The newest one was cut in to 3 pieces before being shipped here, the next one is coming in 5 pieces. He mentioned that they expect to open another one by July in the area of 72nd & Dodge. I can't imagine where unless it's in the parking lot of Crossroads.

It would seem to be a great idea to be open late hours for this location. With good advertising they could pick up those late night eaters after the bars etc.

Here is a link to their temporary website:
http://hollywooddiner.com/

It doesn't mention the hours, but it does however briefly describe the restaurant. Sounds pretty nice, I hope they do well in the Big O!

kiwanis park progress

Post by ItsAllAboutMe »

This park is the one located at the corner of Abbot Drive and Locust st.
Some initial grading was done last year. Final designs were supposed to be done with construction starting anytime. Well, in the last couple of days site work has once again commenced. Hopefully but next spring this park will be complete.

See OmahabyDesign link

That is good news since nothing has happened in so long. This will really help the area and hopefully bring more pedestrians, especially when the hiking/biking trail is added. The info has been on Omaha By Design's website for well over a year and I could not find anything on the Kiwanis Club home page. Keep us posted!

From the Airport to the Qwest Center

Site work is in progress next to the newer gas station on Abbot drive, across the street from the Sleep Inn. Anyone know what might be going in? I'm going guess and say a Village inn or something like it.

Abbot drive developments

Post by ItsAllAboutMe »

The demolition has begun on the one hotel that was under construction near the Holiday Inn Express.

Core/sample drilling is in progress at the Abbot Parking Lot, however the For Sale sign is still up.

The Travel Inn? :) That fountain and pond has been filled for awhile now. Glad someone finally got pics. This was such and eyesore coming in from the airport.

I'm actually a little underwhelmed with the Kiwanis Park 'improvements'. It looks as if they just drained it and re-filled it... with a somewhat unimpressive fountain (over a really long period of time to boot).

I thought most of the improvements were aesthetic as much as mechanical/maintenance. Anything is better than that big dirt whole that was greeting people coming in to town. Now if they can improve that old parking lot across the street from there.

They also have been building a walking path around that pond and then it is running north along Carter Lake.

This is actually part of a larger project to connect the riverfront bike trail (down by Heartland of America park, the new ped bridge, Gallup, etc) to the existing trail sections already in place to the north of the airport. Right now, the trail runs from north of the airport to just past NP Dodge park, with another break of a couple of miles, then it resumes and goes all the way up to the Boyer Chute. Plans are to have all of these "connections" complete by the time the ped bridge opens, so that cyclists can have many miles of uninterrupted trail rides on both the NE and IA sides of the river. Right now, although Nebraska has an extensive trail network, its somewhat disjointed along the riverfront. In contrast, on the Iowa side of the river, the riverfront trail system goes north quite a ways, and to the south and east connects into the Wabash Trace, which is one longest and most used trails in the area.

A quick update for any other cyclists on here. The Kiwanis Park / Carter Lake connector to the north portion of the riverfront trail is now complete. The path snakes along the west side of Abbott Drive, goes a couple of blocks north of the lake, then cuts across Abbott by the postal facility, and meets up with the old trailhead back in the industrial area to the north of the airport.

That only leaves a small stretch from Miller Landing to Kiwanis Park left to complete. I think the plans call for that portion to get finished in time for the pedestrian bridge opening late next year. Just think of the trail possibilities then - Boyer Chute all the way down, across the river, onto the Wabash, and down to KC. :) My legs get tired just thinking about that much riding

Candlewood Suites opens near Eppley Airfield a year late

CHRISTINE LAUE WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:A new Candlewood Suites near Eppley Airfield is open for business, more than a year later than expected.

City inspectors stopped construction of the extended-stay hotel in February 2007 after noticing voids, or spaces, in concrete poured into insulating concrete forms. The forms are hollow foam blocks stacked and filled with concrete to create foundations and walls.

J.G. Desai, one of the managing partners of the limited liability company that owns the hotel, said that the city required demolition of the second and third floors. The owners hired a new contractor to finish the project.
