North 90th Street Development

whats going on on north 90th street between the dollar store and the other dollar store right up the street from the other dollar store?

Are you kidding me? A pamida? I thought Pamida was a small town thing?

I am going to hope for better, but I guess its a step up from a dollar store.

There is no way a Pamida will be entering that spot. Pamida and Shopko are the same company, and besides the fact that Pamida does not go into cities larger than 25,000-50,000 generally, they certainly won't place one less than 1 mile away from a Shopko.

Furthermore, what's going to happen to the NW corner where Blockbuster closed up? Or did get get covered in another thread. I recall seeing something about video stores on another thread.

They have cleaned up the building some, and you can see them working inside pretty clearly when driving by the front.

The Long John Silvers appears to be gone now.

Don't know how reliable it is, but I have heard two businesses from the same industry will be moving into the North 90th neighborhood. The source seemed to be taking a quick trip to his own personal fantasy.

I don't if you took my last comment as "knowing" anything. It was more just a sarcastic remark in regards to the total degradation of 90th from dodge to military. Also wasn't there already a Fantasy's on 90th and Maple?

While not related to Pamida, but rather general conversation. Since rarely do I get out this far "West", to me it seems this stretch from Dodge north on 90th is Omaha's first real example of suburban degradation post 1970. With the basic stick frame house not designed for long term inhabitation, is this what's to be expected of the suburbs? If so, does anyone know of any true new urbanist transformations of this era. While a difficult proposition, with the abundance of open property I would like to see a comprehensive plan (ala Benson, Florence) for this stretch with a series of communal nodes focused both on 90th and within the bordering neighborhoods.

While it's been more than a decade since I've been to a Pamida, if I remember right (remembering that I'm merely 22) Pamida is a more a "general" store. This definitely doesn't lend itself to a "cosmopolitan" area such as Papio.

I thought similar when I was along 90th /Maple yesterday. For a moment I thought I was driving on Ames. All the closed up places. the LJS was always busy at lunch/dinner times when I drove past, same for the Golden Corral farther north. It seems to me that after Hy-Vee left 90th/Maple the development and upkeep stopped.

Guess I gotta eat my humble pie since I said it would never end up there. I still can't see how they would choose there, one mile from a Shopko, two miles from a Wal-Mart, in a major city. I'll be shopping there though. Close to home, and lends to my 'hick' side a little better.

Sorry if this was already mentioned, but according to Wikipedia (not the most reliable of sources) "In 2007, Pamida was separated from ShopKo, and subsequently reestablished its corporate headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska."

I feel like it was covered in the Pamida in Papillion thread, but good to have it listed here as well. Oddly enough, I'm not sure if its actually true.

From Pamida's website:

In 1948, Jim Witherspoon and Lee Wegener began operating a "service merchandiser" business. Through this business, 22 salespeople provided supermarkets across a 5-state area with health and beauty aids, housewares, records and tapes, and some softlines items.
Based on the concept of operating an "outlet" store for the products offered to the supermarkets, Witherspoon and Wegener opened their first retail store as part of the Gibson Products Company in Knoxville, Iowa, in November of 1963. The store did so well that another location was opened in nearby Oskaloosa, Iowa, just 2 weeks later. This rapid growth pattern continued as Witherspoon and Wegener expanded their concept into small towns throughout the Midwest and west central United States. In the late 1970s, the relationship with Gibsons ended, and the Pamida name began appearing on the stores.

The Pamida name has an interesting origin. It represents the first two letters of the first names of Witherspoon's three sons, Pat, Mike, and David. Pamida stores are generally located in county seat towns with populations ranging from 3,000 to 8,000 people. The stores carry both hardlines and softlines categories of merchandise as well as seasonal items. The company also operates its own Pharmacy division.

They say in 1999 they bought, but left it a separate division. According to the Sun Capital website, both Pamida and Shopko are held by them. Either way, it doesn't make much difference.

Yep, not only is the word on the street, it was in the newspaper on the 21th

Movies to meals

Keystone Group is turning the former Blockbuster northwest of 90th and Maple Streets into a new Hollywood Diner.

Ron Bradstreet, entertainment director for Keystone, said the building would get the Hollywood Diner treatment, complete with stainless steel and neon.

When completed, the 6,000-square-foot diner will be considerably bigger than the two others that Keystone owns in the area. It also will include a gaming arcade, Bradstreet said.

It's expected to open by June 2.

Pamida is probably one of the worst stores ever for selection and prices. Trust me, I have been trapped in a small town the past four years for college.

Pamida has been in Omaha since the 1960s - the corporate headquarters, that is. But there has never been a Pamida retail store in the city.

That changed Wednesday afternoon, as the doors opened at 3070 N. 90th St.

The Omaha store's opening is not a major shift in its corporate philosophy of targeting smaller communities, said Paul Rothamel, Pamida's president and chief executive. The company just decided it would be a good idea to have a store in its home city.

"I do think we should have a presence," Rothamel said, adding that the fact that there had never been an Omaha Pamida "is amazing to me."

Rothamel said the company had been looking at the 90th and Maple Streets location for some time and will consider other Omaha locations if the store is a success. Community interest has been high, he said, with people walking by and knocking to ask when the store would open.

Pamida already competes directly with Wal-Mart and Target in 10 percent of its markets, Rothamel said. He added that competing in the Omaha market will be exciting.

About 5 blocks south of 90th and Maple there is a Sign that says Fantasy's, The strip mall is empty and the house appears that it will be demolished very soon.
