Neighbors may oppose commercial development


Neighbors of a proposed commercial development complained Tuesday to the Omaha City Council that they only recently learned the development was on its way.

The council voted unanimously to postpone a vote on the development's final plans until its next meeting on Jan. 4.

The Cattail Creek Commercial Development near 192nd and Q Streets covers 18 acres and includes nine lots.

Several neighbors complained that they weren't given notice of the development.

"It just sort of seemed like it was crammed down our throats," Jerry Eichner said.

Some of the neighbors said that when they bought their houses, they were told the area would be used for more homes and not for stores.

They said the first time they heard about the development was when they received notice of Tuesday's public hearing before the council.

The original plans for the mixed-use subdivision were approved in 2000. The Planning Board signed off on the final plat earlier this year.

Dan Welch suggested that the matter be postponed until January so he could make sure that the neighbors had been sent notification.

Planning Director Bob Peters said that usual procedures were followed and that notice was sent to neighbors who live within 300 feet of the development.

That just upsets me off. For starters, putting more houses on that corner would not follow the plans Omaha by Design has for retail on all four corners major intersections.

Second, people who disgrace the Omaha landscape with Celebrity Homes(the developer of Cattail Creek), especially those tacky villas that are there, should never have any say in what the city council does. It seems like most of those people are considerably functionalist and have very little taste for aesthetics. Keep them away. If they ran the city, Omaha would not look any different than it did 15 years ago.

They don't even know what kind of development is going in there, do they? What's if its just another Starbucks and a day-care? They'd rather have more of their crappy generic disgraceful houses there then a place to take their kids and pick up some morning mochas before they go to work? Either way its going to make additional traffic, if that's what they are worried about. Although I'm hoping it abides by the Omaha by design plan and its sidewalk fronted with parking in the back.

They should vote down the proposed mixed use development and instead zone the area for income-restricted apartments.

I don't understand why people don't realise that everytime a development leaves the corner of a development un-developed on a major intersection it is always for commercial. They should think about this before they buy a house and save the complaining for something else. look at 168 + Maple - Wal-mart, 156 and Maple - HyVee, 180 + Q HyVee, 144 @fort - strip mall, 156 + fort - strip mall, Just to name a few examples.

I could be wrong here, but wouldn't a commercial site make the value of their homes go up?

It looks like the delay for this bit of retail is over now. There's a strip center looking structure being built on this tract of land. Two of the walls are almost up.

The neighbors had no chance, I am sure this was well documented on the origonal platt map when the home owners bought their homes.
