Omaha Bagel Shops

Post by skip »

We live in a city with nearly a 1 million metro population. WHY is there only ONE local bagel shop (Bagel Bin) in the whole city?! I understand Omaha Bagel Co is an online place, but what is with the lack of brick and mortar bagel shops in this town? I don't want to go to Panera or Brueggers for a dang bagel.

WHAT IS GOING ON?! Bring on the bagels!!!!

OMAHA BAGEL CO.

Bagels aren’t typically viewed as culinary mastery. They’re humble, bread-y vessels perfect for a quick breakfast or a way to satisfy hungry attendees at a morning seminar. Bagels are tasty, but they’re not typically special in the way other breakfast pastries like donuts, scones, and homemade Pop-Tarts are.Is

I would love a classic new york style spot with lox. I know many brunch places serve it, but a quick walk in walk out place that isn’t a chain would be nice. Am I missing one?

Phyls deli in the old market does one, haven’t tried it personally but what we have had from there has been pretty good!

Had some amazing bagels at Mercer and Sons Delicatessen today! Found out they make fresh everything bagels every Saturday. Definitely the best bagel I've had in town.

But yes, I wish we had a few traditional bagel shops that weren't chains.

Agreed! For my birthday, my wife ordered bagels from this place in NYC and had them shipped here. Not at all cheap, but they had the most amazing garlic bagel sandwich there. Smoked whitefish, onion, tomato...it was super good. And when I had it here, it was just like having it fresh, there. Of course she ordered a bunch of other kinds, too, and they didn't last long in our house. Our kids were like "wow THESE are good, we should do this all the time!"

They found out what disappointment really was after that day, lol.

Meh. I'm not going to lie, I find bagels mostly over-rated. I'll have one if I'm hungry and they're convenient, but I don't seek them out. I like the occasional Bagel with Lox, Cream Cheese, Tomatoes, Onions, and Capers. However, I never really understood the obsession. This is usually where someone steps in and says, "But you haven't had REAL New York bagels!" Yes, I have, and again... meh. I suppose I am not alone with this opinion which is why there are so few independent bagel options in Omaha (honestly, 75% of people probably get them at a Panera drive-thru). Finally, I feel it's been widely-publicized that bagels aren't quite the healthy alternative to donuts and pastries that people used to think they were. So, they lost the "it's a healthy alternative" crowd.

We were oddly just talking about bagels, and the wife wanted good bagels. I'm of the opinion there is no such thing. Just tolerable, and bad bagels. Anyway...

Bruggers or whatever came up, but we prefer local. We found out about Bagel Bin, but that location means there is no way we are going.

But apparently, they also distribute to a coffee spot near us that we already walk to occasionally. So here's to hoping they have them when we go, and they are fresh and as good as everyone says.

Dundee Double Shot.

I think I read in the same search that Blue Line Coffee might also carry them.

Bagels aren’t a health food, any more than donuts are. But I like them on occasion, mostly for what you can add to them to make a sandwich. I like mixing things up at breakfast (my favorite meal of the day), and while I may only eat 2 or 3 bagels in an average month I do appreciate the variety most bagel shops carry.
Ironically I eat way more bagels here in México than I do in Omaha.

A month? lol. I think that's what I've had in the last decade!
