I wasn't entirely sure the appropriate place to post this. Searched for a thread using the word "inflation" and its just sad how much of regular vocabulary this word has become to us and Americans in general... But anyway, I went to Walmart last night and I was shocked to see many of the regular items I buy were on rollback. It was actually quite exciting to see! Just one example was a packet of tuna, what used to be like $1.19 was down to $.69! That's the lowest I've seen as long as I can remember and packs of tuna have been a pantry staple for me for forever. Other items were down a good 20%. So apparently I'm not the only one deliberately using that strategy to lower the grocery store prices. I've been buying mostly store brand products and purposely shunning products i believe are overpriced during this whole inflation storm, hoping one day that would force the grocers to lower prices on other products, and it may finally be happening!

A good example for me is bacon. A couple years ago it used to be like $4.29 for a package of the good stuff. I used to buy it every other week or so. Recently it's been up to $6.99, potentially even higher. I wouldn't know because bacon is one of those things I walk by without looking at anymore. So I hope that'll go down too cause I love me some bacon.

That is a good story to read....I have done this shift some as well. It is crazy how much some of the name brand products are. One thing that I see that is substantially higher french fries. Used to be able to buy a 2lb bag of them for $1.89 pretty much all the time. Now, for the past year or two, they are regularly $3.99 at every store I have been to.

But I have noticed that some prices do seem to be coming down.

Good point there too. I think the tuna is the same weight, but I'll make sure. About the bacon, all bacon used to be 16oz, but now all of it is 12oz. I'm talking about the big names like hillshire farms. And despite that, it has been up to $6.99 for 12oz vs $4.29 for 16oz back before the pandemic.

There is still bacon that is 16 OZ. Don't buy a lot, but I did get some a couple of weeks ago and made sure to check weight and price AND make a stab at looking at how much fat there was. Ended up buying HyVee Store brand in 16 oz package for I think around $6;50

Well whaddaya know? I just did a quick search on Walmart for bacon and it looks like that's one of the things that has improved. Farmland was the brand I was actually referring to that went to 12oz and it was like $6.99. They're now selling it in 16oz packages (and making a point of it) and the price is down from $6.88 to $4.98.

Shows you how long it's been since I've bought bacon. That may have to change soon.

As a side note, i still don't understand why beef continues to be disproportionately higher than everything. Around 11 years ago, prices went up due to a number of reasons, and haven't return to anything close to what they used to be. I was at hy-vee on Sunday, and they were selling 73/23 ground beef at 2/$9 (i don't buy that, but it shows how expensive even the fatty stuff is). 93% is almost $7 a pound.

We usually buy Bacon at Costco in the pack that contains 4 - 1 Lb packages. It has been a while I will need to look at the price next time I am there.

This is the time of year when pork prices and, to some extent, Beef are at their yearly low point.

I bought a full Brisket, Prime grade for 3.99 / Lb. For prime grade, that is as good a price as I can remember. This was at Costco.

Part of your problem is, you were going to Hyvee. They are so high on everything. Right now you can get a 3lb roll of 80% at Bakers for $12, so thats $4/lb. Plus if you go on Friday you can get 4x fuel points, which helps even more with savings.

Definitely true. Going back to the fries I was talking about, they always used to be 32oz now a lot of them are 28 or 26oz for the much higher price.

I personally don't buy a lot of ground beef, but I know it was always $3.99 for a pound of 85/15 consistently. Then 2020 happened... I'll never buy a big roll cause it would go bad. I only buy a pound at a time. Last time I looked at family fare at least, they were wanting something around $6 for a pound. I honestly think the prices are a bunch of corporate bull cr@p and greed. They're finally getting called out for it.

i rarely go to hy-vee, because you are right: they are expensive by comparison. But i wanted some of their stuffed mushrooms, so i gave in I didn't get the hamburger, but it did make me pause just how expensive it is/was.

I don't buy a ton of ground beef either, but I have even gotten the 10lb rolls from Sam's and then cut it up and put it in freezer bags to freeze it. They are around $4 for 90% for that huge roll.

So, I've been big on coconut water in the last week. There's a couple brands that are readily available anywhere. I never knew it. It used to be something you could only get at natty g's, whole foods, or TJ's. I tried it first about 10 years ago and I hated it. But that was original flavor. I'm rediscovering coconut water currently and I'm pretty much falling in love with it now. Theres flavors that weren't around 10 years ago; Mango, pineapple, peach. Now, it's not something I particularly like like flavor wise, but the nutrition profile is off the charts! That makes it worth it to me.

In the last few days I've pretty much only been drinking coconut water and it's perfect. The nutritional profile pretty much works out to if you drink it in place of water, there's no way you don't hit your potassium needs, and it's more pleasant than V8 for instance.

C2O (brand) makes an espresso flavored coconut water and I was very impressed, having tried it for the first time today. I was very skeptical about what it'd taste like, but it's quite simply a revelation! Tastes just as good as say a Starbucks or Monster, but no dairy, packs a punch with 200mg of caffeine, and provides a decent chunk of potassium, comparatively. Needless to say, I'm converted. I highly recommend it.

To my point as it pertains to the thread, natty g's wants 5 something for a liter of coconut water. I decided to buy a 6 pack of that on Amazon, assuming that would be the lowest price... But I went to Walmart tonight and they have it on rollback for $3.78 per liter, about $.50 less. So bottom line, I highly recommend buying coconut water at Walmart.

Haha that sounds about like me lately. At some point if people do this a little more, they will start lowering prices some I would think.

Stopped into Hy-Vee this morning to pick up some coffee creamer for my wife and noticed at the self-employed checkout that they had some signs advertising their Easter Brunch.

Now I have nothing against anyone eating at Hy-Vee on Easter or any other day. As a matter of fact as a kid my dad took me to the store on Center near Saddle Creek several times because it was only $1! I certainly have no expectations of anyone selling a breakfast for $1... or even $5... although I wish it was less than $5!

We get "Hy-Chi" occasionally as I do feel their Chinese takeout is pretty good, TBH.

The Easter Brunch was advertised at $24.99/adults... I didn't even bother reading the price for kids.

We don't go out for brunch very often, however if we do it's usually to Backlot on 204th. I imagine their prices would be higher if they're open on Easter but I do know the last time we went it was $20/person.

I don't know what Hy-Vee is serving to try and justify $25 but it better be prime rib, perhaps crab legs as well. I'm sorry, but I cannot see paying $25 to eat at a grocery store for a meal.
