Extremely Large Beef Slaughter Plant a Very Real Possibility...

Post by Bernie_Madoff »

I have be hearing about the possibility of a brand new/state of the art beef slaughter plant being built from the ground up in South Omaha. Supposedly it would be much more advanced than anything else ever seen in the US in the food processing industry. This plant would supposedly be capable of slaughtering a total of 3000-5500 head of cattle per day (with an increase in 7-10 years down the road). I guess there are a multitude of studies underway here in Omaha, as well as one other location not far from Omaha (but still in Nebraska).

This would be great for the city of Omaha and the region on so many different levels.

While it may be that a new beef plant is in the works I do not see that happening in the Metro area or S Omaha. Would be nice to be proven wrong though.

I can’t imagine there is enough land any more down in that area for the plant, the stockyard area to hold that many cattle.

3000-5500??? Per day? That isn't even per hour at most plants.
i seriously doubt this rumor. The reason the Omaha stockyards died is because it was cheaper to put the slaughterhouse out where the cattle were rather than ship the cattle to Omaha.

Sorry but I'm calling BS on this.

3300-5000 is in line with the bigger Tyson plants. Dakota Dunes according to the latest numbers I can find via Google is approximately 7000/day. Greater Omaha Packing website states that they can process 2.400 head a day.

Doable, but why would someone build a new facility in the city unless an existing packing house is expanding.

Park near a packing house and count the carcasses leaving the conveyor into a dump truck. Should give you an idea. A 10 minute watch of where your next pair of boots comes from should be a benchmark.
