Chili anyone??

Post by Omaha Cowboy »

I don't know if anyone caught this little tidbit in last weeks issue of The Reader..But it seems to be a very significant 'get' for Omaha:

From The Reader:

'Omaha will host the 2005 Worlds Championship Chili Cookoff, sponsored by ConAgra Foods and the International Chili Society. The 3 day cookoff, slated for Friday-Sunday, Oct 7-9, will be held at the Lewis and Clark Landing along the Missouri Riverfront. It is expected to bring a $5.1 million dollar impact to the city. Last year the event was held in Las Vegas and attracted 400 competitors from around the world and cable coverage on the Food Network. Mayor Mike Fahey said "I have no doubt that what Kansas City has become for barbeque, Omaha can be for chilil" (Huh? An Omaha Cowboy interjection). ICS sanctioned cook-offs include three categories: red (traditional red chili), chili verde (green chili), and salsa, with a world champion crowned annually in each category.'..

Fahey's inane commentary aside, this again, seems to be a pretty darn significant develoment that appears to have flown under the radar screen as it relates to an event 'get'..A $5.1 million dollar impact for the Omaha area?..From a chili cook off no less..YOWZA! :)

All is forgiven.

Actually, the comment on The Reader was geared more for those that have been bagging on the OWH for not having stories quicker.

For someone who's always linking stories when someone starts a second thread on the same topic, how did you miss my link in this thread to the same story?

I'm glad to see Lewis and Clark Landing is getting more use. A chilli cook off was mentioned but I don't know if it was going to be off this magnitude.

Bumping this thread as a reminder this is going on. Hope to make it down there at lunch today to check it out.

(edit) Or maybe not, just checked the schedule, doesn't look like much going on today over noon.

So I hear the Food Network was a no-show for this event. Any truth to this? I really wish I could've attended, but work schedule prevented it. It looked like a success from the news. Anyone attend who can give a report of the festivities? It looked busy as I drove by on the way to work.

my parents went and they said it was a waste of time. They said there were so many people there, that there was like a hundred people in each line just to get a couple tablespoons of chili.

maybe if they had gone at a different time it would have been ok, but this sunday afternoon was just nuts they said.

The World's Championship Chili Cookoof is returning to Omaha! :D ... October 6-8 at Lewis and Clark Landing.
Carol Hancock, owner and chief executive officer of the International Chili Society, which runs the event, said the response from Omahans to the cookoff made the decision to return easy.

This is a major feather in Omaha's cap. It received great coverage in USA Today last year, and that should repeat this year as well. The organizers are from Southern California and Manhattan, NY. I met them both last fall and they both said they were pleasantly surprised, if not shocked, at how warm a reception the event got from Omahans, plus how nice our riverfront and downtown were. The Californian used to live next door to a good friend of mine, who recently moved to Bellevue from Lake Elsinore, CA. So perhaps that didn't hurt Omaha when it came to selecting a new cook-off location (Con-Agra's money didn't hurt, either). All I know is the ties they had led to me being one of the judges for the final round of chili. It was great fun!

Warm up these cold winter days with a bowl of chili for National Chili Day!

National Chili Day is celebrated the fourth Thursday of February, and this year it is February 23, according to nationaldaycalendar.com. The most basic and commonly made chili is made of beans, tomatoes, chili peppers, meat, garlic, onions, and cumin, but there are many variations of the basic recipe. The American Frontier Settlers found unique way of preserving chili while thy traveled the trails. The took suet, dried beef, dried chili peppers, and salt, and they formed them into bricks to be preserved.
