I’m not surprised, but sorry to hear that. It sounds like it was the same thing as with Getras. When the owner dies, the family either can’t, or don’t want to keep it going.

Malara's Italian Restaurant (2123 Pierce St, Omaha) - CLOSED

Very sorry to hear. We dined there on occasion and it was Old School in good ways. They have the very best meatballs in Omaha.
Saigon Surface also announced their closing. Four noted restaurants announced closing in the past week. Sad.

I haven't seen an announcement anywhere. Is there a sign on the door or something?

Family remembers life, legacy of Malara's Italian Restaurant owner
Caterina Malara simply loved to cook; Italian food, to be exact, of which she had innumerable favorites.

An Omaha state senator honored the late owner of an iconic Italian restaurant in the city Friday at the Nebraska Legislature. Most knew her as Grandma Malara, who founded the business that bears her name near 22nd and Pierce 39 years ago. She died this month at age 87. Caterina Malara simply loved to cook, Italian food, to be exact, of which she had innumerable favorites.

"Spaghetti carbonara was one of her favorites to make, she loved making her lasagna, her ravioli. She always prided herself in being able to duplicate a recipe by just tasting it," said Gracie Benak, Malara's third daughter. Born in Italy, Malara and her husband Luigi moved to Omaha with their three daughters to take care of family.

A social media post said they depleted their inventory.

Yeah, after they announced the closing, they decided to not reorder food to make it to a final date. Instead, when they ran out, they'd be done. We were there on Monday and they only had spaghetti noodles and lasagna (for pasta types), and only 1 desert. So we figured it wouldn't be long...

Hope they sell their Italian sausage recipe to someone local so we can keep that going.

The building sold and it looks like the owner of South Omaha Roofing bought it.

Praying on non-elderly relatives is almost as bad.

I saw that they were reopening. However, I didn’t connect it with the old Malara’s location. Interesting!
