Smokin' Barrel (Moving to NEC 132 & Center)

Smokin' Barrel (South of 136th and Q) is teasing plans for a new (presumably expanded) restaurant. Would love to see them be able to compete with Porky Butts.

They're going to need a lot more selection if they want to compete with Porky Butts. One thing I love about Porky Butts is their selection. BOTH places have excellent BBQ, but Porky Butts definitely wins the restaurant experience contest. Smokin' Barrel has 5 meats and 4 sides. Porky Butts has 10 meats (including the oft-desired burnt ends) and 12 sides. I don't have to share a table with strangers at Porky Butts and I don't have to buy my beverages by the bottle. I'd love to see Smokin' Barrel really up their game and start offering more selection and a better dine-in experience.

Digging through the Facebook comments, it sounds like the new location will be 120th and I, in the shopping center on the north east corner. Smokin' Barrel said they will announce the new location once they sign the lease. They did mention that they are moving and this will not be a second location. I did a quick search and I don't see a building permit yet.

Yes, but not at 120th and “I”.
That stretch of road has become something of a Mecca for locally owned restaurants.

Nope, in the old Firehouse Subs locations at 132 & Center. I'm good with that!

I overheard him speaking with another customer last time I was there and the customer asked where at 120th & I he was going and he said which unit and then added in an exasperated tone, ".If we can come to an agreement." So, I'm guessing they didn't come to an agreement. I would have preferred the 120th & I location as it's right off the interstate and traffic feels a little less hectic, but I'm cool with the 132nd & Center location. Now, two of my favorite restaurants will be nearby each other. Smokin' Barrel BBQ and Star Indian Cuisine. Actually, there's a lot of great restaurants near that intersection.

Wayne over at Smokin' Barrel BBQ finally announced that he signed a new lease and will be moving to 2457 S 132nd Street. He is scheduled to open August 1.

I stopped by a couple of week ago for lunch. I walked in, took one look at the line, and turned around and left and went to Star Indian Cuisine for lunch instead.

I'll go back when the novelty wears off.
