La Plaza Fiesta Mexican Restaurant (Westwood Plaza)

La Plaza Fiesta Mexican restaurant, out of Sioux Falls, SD, is taking over the former El Vallarta spot at 124th and West Center Rd in Omaha. They are not affiliated with the former tenants. Their social media postings indicate they will “open soon”. I’m told that their recipes originate from the interior state of Guanajuato. I can hope that they haven’t been too terribly sanitized for the gringo tastebuds. They apparently pride themselves on their alcoholic beverages, judging from the many photos that appear on their Facebook page.

I would imagine that converting a former Mexican restaurant to a new Mexican restaurant is a pretty quick task. Replace signage and you're done.

I came across an interesting article reporting on the complaints coming out of popular Mexico City gastronomic neighborhoods from longtime residents who are dealing with the various negative effects of gentrification. Besides the obvious skyrocketing rents and general cost of living, it seems that gentrification is leading to the dilution of spiciness in area restaurant salsas and other foods.

The neighborhood I call “home” in Puerto Vallarta is a classic example of gentrification, forcing out longtime residents as smaller properties are sold for high rise condo construction. I haven’t so much seen restaurants serving Mexican cuisine “dumbing down” their recipes as I have seen a huge proliferation of restaurants selling Japanese, Italian, Argentine, and U.S. cuisine. I love the options, but I recognize that gentrification negatively impacts many people.

Grand opening was September 1, 2025. Located in Westwood Plaza (on the south side of West Center Road between 120th Street and 125th Avenue). It's in the standalone building where El Vallarta, McAlister's Deli, and Hooters used to be.

I went there recently and it was pretty good.
