It seems like Baker's (Kroger) is making a major push to grow in Omaha. Obviously we have the two new large stores under construction right now on W Maple and Gretna. There's the rumor of a third new store near Werner Park.

In the last few weeks now I started getting in the mail, Baker's weekly ad. We haven't received a weekly ad from Baker's in years. Not since you'd get them from several stores in a packet on Wednesdays.

That would be welcome news. I started getting the Baker's ad in Bellevue a few months ago for the first time in years.

That makes sense that they would begin marketing more... I haven't shopped in a Baker's in probably 5+ years and had to run into the one at Lakeside this weekend for wine. Place was a ghost town, had two registers open and 4 teenagers standing around waiting to sack (I guess).

I don't like their layout and their existing stores are quite depressing (IMO). I'm hoping the one at 204th & Q is amazing as I'd like to give them another try.

I would assume they might do that once the store opens?

On the Upside app currently and for the past few weeks Baker's has been offering a 14 or 15% back with a max of $10 per visit. And now on top of that, starting this week and for the next 4 weeks they're offering $20 back on a purchase of $50 or more. One offer like this per week for the next four weeks. And if you make a $50 purchase every week, they will give you another $20. Pretty aggressive marketing push.

There is a Nextdoor post for the Gretna area saying Bakers is hiring. The post says they are opening in early November

There are also banner signs near the new store that say " Now Hiring " for the last week or so.

I'm sure they want to hit it hard before turkey day and Xmas. Two of the highest-traffic holidays in the grocery industry. I'm looking forward to it opening, however I simply don't live close enough to this store to make it worth the hassle and mess it will be the first few months they're open for business.

I have a feeling it will be like when Circuit City came to Omaha - they opened across the street from the Mart and handed out flyers at the door trying to convince all of the visitors their prices were the absolute lowest in the market... of course there isn't another store directly across from them, but I don't believe they're among the lowest-priced grocers in Omaha. Maybe a step below HyVee, but that's about it.

One thing that does irk me about Bakers is whenever they put something on sale, you have to use their dumb loyalty card. We rarely shop there now so if my wife runs in and goes through self-checkout for an item, doesn't input our phone number, we can get hosed on a product by 20% or more. Sure, you can blame us, but just mark it down and be done with it. It's like the goofy rebate |expletive| at Menards.

HyVee does it to an extent, but not at the level of Bakers. And this goes back to when Bakers originally implemented their card - it was a huge deal and customers were super irritated about the tracking, having to carry a card, etc. It's simply annoying.

The crazy thing is, when I was shopping at the Baker's at 132nd and Maple last week, they were advertising that they are taking applications and interviewing for their new store on 180th and Maple, which has barely started construction. Assuming they are going to hire prior to opening and have their employees train at other stores.

My oldest got hired while in high school by Fareway. They also did while that store was under construction (thought it was closer to opening). He worked for about a month at their store off 170th and Harrison. It was nice because a decent core of his store had worked at other Omaha area stores for a month or two, so they weren't all new as the store opened.

Baker's definitely pushes their card more than Hy Vee but the gap is definitely narrowing. With gas being so high now, Hy Vee has been running a ton of specials where you have to use their card to get them. Target has their Circle program which works like the Baker's card.

I honestly don't mind it if it saves money. Cards, loyalty programs and apps are so prevalent now and save so much money that it doesn't stand out like it used to. I hardly shop at Wal Mart. They seem to be the exception.

Heck even Maverik has really pushed their Nitro program to get the cheapest gas. When we eat fast food now, I wouldn't dream of doing it without using an app or loyalty program. The savings is to great, and in this economy, that matters.

They brought in ads from the Sunday paper and literally would turn to a page for each product they had. I suppose it was efficient for them to go to one store, but man it was the worst! I'm assuming it's not even a thing anymore because WalMart has about 6-10 manned checkouts in most stores (if that). Can't price match at self checkout (not easily, anyway).

How many printed coupons do you even see now? Very few compaired to not many years ago
