Breslow Hockey Center (4th & V Street)
According to the Journal Star the 2015 Vision Lincoln group on Thursday will be giving money to the city in order to build an icerink near Haymarket Park by downtown. The icerink will be part of the "sports triangle" meant to heighten Lincoln's local sport's scene. No sign yet of how large the rink will be seating wise. This is a much needed and excellent addition to the Lincoln area!

Breslow Hockey Center (4th & V Street)
Lincoln's new ice rinks were formally introduced today at a press conference downtown. The facility provides two new sheets of ice inside, and from the looks of it one with a fair amount of seating. There is also the possibility of a third ice rink for outside. The facility is still going to be located somewhere in the West Haymarket District.

So are the stars going to play there?
Is UNL going to still have a club team or will they be getting a D1 team?

The LJS article said that the Stars will stay at the Ice Box, as it will remain open even if UNL gains control of the fairgrounds. It also mentioned that the university does not have any plans to field NCAA level hockey teams.

I don't see how they could field a hockey team. They have already had to add a women's bowling and rifle team. There can't be too many more women's sports to add for Title IX.lnkS wrote:The LJS article said that the Stars will stay at the Ice Box, as it will remain open even if UNL gains control of the fairgrounds. I also don't think the University could have a D1 hockey team considering they had to cut the men's swim team about seven years ago, which sucked considering they were consistently a top 15 team, had Olympians, and were the second fastest school in the big 12.

Breslow Ice Center a go?
Could it be??? I biked down on the salt creek levee trail (which is on far west end of the entire project) and just tons of work being done. If the ice center is not going in then they are doing some extensive grading just for a parking lot. Here's a few links indicating the center is a go for next spring...

Breslow Ice Center plans skating along
But more may be revealed Jan. 24, when the University of Nebraska Board of Regents is tentatively scheduled to look at a business plan and land agreement proposal for the Breslow Ice Center.

Next step is getting the university on board. The big issue for them is if it loses money, they are stuck with the losses.

Unanimously approved by the Regents. Breslow is a go.

I gave up following this debacle but did they decide two sheets or one? And is one supposed to have the arena seating for the Club team like in the original renderings?

Now approved by City Council. Starting off with one sheet, plan is if all goes well second one added in four years. I think the first one will be so busy they will be clamoring for the 2nd one almost immediately after it opens.

They're delaying the second sheet? Weird. Given the shortage of ice in Lincoln I thought that the second sheet would be an absolute from the start. Good to see this finally going forward though.Greg S wrote:Now approved by City Council. Starting off with one sheet, plan is if all goes well second one added in four years. Re: Breslow Ice Center a go?
Yeah I think it's crazy on the 2nd sheet as well. Several city council members spoke on the need for it and the probability of it as well. Hal Daub spoke in favor of the 2nd sheet at the Regents meeting. At least this thing is a go finally. Very good for hockey in the state.
Ralston almost went with only one sheet as well. Very glad they didn't, it's in use a ton.

After 7 years in the making, ground has officially broken for the $11 million John Breslow Ice Hockey Center.
Saturday morning, UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler, and John Breslow himself, along with other UNL officials, spoke to the public about the highly anticipated ice hockey center.
It's been a long time coming for hockey and ice skating lovers around Lincoln.
The 54,000 square-foot, John Breslow Ice Hockey Center is located on the southwest corner of Haymarket Park, and is scheduled to be finished August 2015, a day Breslow has been waiting for, for years.

Went to the Nebraska basketball game Saturday night. Saw the construction area for this. It's definitely full speed ahead. It's right at the base of the newest pedestrian bridge that links Haymarket Park and PBA.

Breslow Center, a boon to Lincoln ice enthusiasts, opens Tuesday
Henry Cordes - World-Herald staff writer wrote:Until now, the only available indoor public skating ice in Lincoln has been in the Ice Box, a converted State Fair exposition building that is home to the Lincoln Stars junior hockey team. While the Ice Box ice has been available for public use, it always closed during the hot summer months.

This is long over due for Lincoln. Hoping they can add the second sheet in the next few years.
Nice to see the additional rinks popping up in the state.

I still can't believe Breslow and the Ice Box is the only ice in Lincoln?

Yeah, too bad they could not build the 2nd sheet right away at Breslow. Still with Breslow coming on-line, it doubles the amount of ice in Lincoln and they can now have ice in the summer.MadMartin8 wrote:I still can't believe Breslow and the Ice Box is the only ice in Lincoln?
