Looks like Lincoln is making a strong move away from unused oceans of parking and to increased density and walkability. Baby steps, but it's moving in the right direction.

Sprawling commercial parking lots — think Sam’s Club and Walmart and Gateway Mall — could become a thing of the past under a city proposal to eliminate parking requirements in most commercial and industrial areas.

This is awesome! Omaha needs to follow suit as a city-wide plan.

Although not a fan of this quoted line from the article. Isn't everything within the range of a residential neighborhood? What if you are a neighborhood bar? The owners should make the choice how much parking they want. Maybe they want to give up 3-4 stalls to create outdoor seating.

Yeah that is a peculiar caveat.

One of the examples given was the cluster of shops on the NE corner of 33rd & A. In contrast to a Target/Sams/etc parking lot that demonstrates the contrast of what the deregulation looks to address.

I'll say, it would be great if EVERYTHING was removed but for a city like Lincoln? It'll take time when density is built up further towards the suburbs. This is a step though to redeveloping commercial lots. If the influence spreads to where developers decide to encourage more efficient uses of space per development, sooner or later, the city probably will enact city-wide parking requirements for pretty much everything. Stepping stones though, this is a great step for Lincoln!
