"The Omaha couple plan to reopen the former Angie's Restaurant in June with an updated but not unrecognizable look and a new name - Lucky's ten-O-one Restaurant and Lounge.

On an impromptu Friday walk-through of the Lucky's work-in-progress, John and Mary Jo Begley said they aim to reopen the 300-seat main floor dining room and lounge in June and the 150-seat private banquet hall in time for private holiday parties.

They even envision a semi-private "Little Italy Room" with a kitschy lighted painting rescued from the basement and other memorabilia paying homage to Little Italy and Omaha's Italian steakhouse tradition."

If you dined at Angie's Restaurant before it closed in February, Lucky's Ten-O-One Restaurant & Lounge will feel familiar.

The old Angie's bones are intact, spit-shined and spot-lit.

Beneath new carpet, paint and wallcoverings, there's the same dark, substantial room. The same archways, etched glass, chandeliers and statuary. The same plates, chairs and tables (sans the white cloths). The same mirrors strategically placed for watching - and being watched - discreetly.

If Angie's wasn't your era or your thing, Lucky's will feel like an old steakhouse, minus the well-seasoned waitresses and nicotine, with an updated menu and bar, paper place mats and a fair amount of Omaha-centric kitsch.

We ate there in late June and had a nice meal, with very friendly service. I understand they have continued to tweak the menu since then, and have added salads to the meal cost. Before they were a la carte, but only $2 or so.
Lots of old memorabilia on the walls from Omaha's Italian Steakhouse era. That alone is worth a trip.

The Begleys recruited Paul Urban, whose talents shined last year at the innovative, now-closed Darwin Bistro. The new executive chef brought new ideas - and most of his Darwin staff - to Lucky's in February. He reshaped its menu, which leaves one foot in present-day meat-and-potatoes Omaha and the other free to step toward a more open-minded future.

We went last Friday. I highly recommend it. The service was pretty slow that night, but we were there at the same time as three HUGE parties, so I'll cut them some slack.

The new menu is a huge improvement, but not a complete deviation.

What shitty writing. The previous incarnation of this restaurant closed because it thought meat-and-potatoes was "now" and open-minded is "future". Meat-and-potatoes is past, open-minded is now.

We loved the place, but they kept tinkering with the chefs and menu, and I suspect they scared away the clientele that they had managed to develop.

It is a tough time now for many restaurants.

I am sad they didn't make it. However the food was very inconsistent during my visits. I was there four times. The first at lunch was very good. The next three times were at dinner and it got steadily worse over the next three visits. The last time I took my family was in January and it was just awful. The family was looking at me during the meal like "What did you bring us here for? What were you thinking?" I didn't go back again. Between the first time in the fall of 2007 and the January 2008 visit it was like to completely different restaurants.

WheatFields now is booking parties at Lucky's. That's the former Lucky's-ten-O-one restaurant at 1001 Pacific St., which closed in June and has been operated since mid-August as a bar only.

WheatFields owner Ron Popp said he needed space for larger parties, and Lucky's can seat 50 to 300 people on its main and lower levels. So they're giving it a go.

"We're working with the owner to cater parties there. They're running the bar, and we'll do catering," he said. "We can really do parties now. It's a very nice space."

Since I don't see the owners of Lucky's being able to move the property in this economy, renting it on an as needed basis is the best for both parties. If it is successful and Wheatfields get good feedback, they can buy it in the future.

They are very good. I eat at one or the other about once every 2 months, and have never had anything other than a very good meal. A bit pricey at lunch ($13-15) but it is the same price for supper.
