Omaha has been getting ALL SORTS of mentions during Olympic swimming coverage. Seriously, left and right. There's been a lot of talk about how for many of the athletes, the Omaha trials were more challenging than the Olympics.

I just love that every time it's mentioned, the announcers don't even skip a beat. They're like "earlier this summer in Omaha..." or "The trials in Omaha were..."

Really cool.

The Obama campaign started canvassing Omaha neighborhoods last month. John Berge, hired as
director of Obama's Nebraska campaign, said that while some resources will go into the rest of the state,
they'll be focused on the 2nd District.

Omaha, with about 400,000 people, lies in a congressional district of nearly 600,000. The city and
suburbs have most of the state's black population and much of its population of Hispanics and other
minorities, groups that national polls show favoring Obama.

The 2nd District gives Obama a small geographic area to target. Television ads aimed at Council Bluffs,
Iowa, just across the river, already spill over onto Omaha networks.

Adkins isn't convinced that Obama can actually win Omaha's electoral vote. Republicans have a 15,000
voter advantage in the district — much less than in other parts of the state, but still formidable.

So far, McCain's effort in Nebraska is largely volunteer.

The Nebraska Republican Party is canvassing on his behalf, said executive director Matt Miltenberger.
Volunteers are hitting thousands of households with information about McCain and state candidates,
including 5,000 homes in the 2nd District, Miltenberger said.

"There will definitely be a McCain presence here," Miltenberger said.

Loree Bykerk, chair of the political science department at UNO, said some of the attention for Nebraska
might be more a result of Obama "having more money that he knows what to do with."

However, Bykerk added, "if they're going through the trouble of setting up campaign offices in Nebraska,
Alaska, Wyoming, maybe it is going to be close."

A new computer program says McCain wins by a hair in a single matchup, but Obama's the cutie when multiple photos are used.

The product of a University of Nebraska Medical Center researcher, the program quantifies physical attractiveness using 29 facial measurements. It tabulates
characteristics such as distance between the eyes and length of the ears and nose and issues a score of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most attractive.

Well, either way it's still erroneous despite being in our favor. Our market area does not include Lincoln, which is part of a Lincoln-Hastings-Kearney market. This means my mom, who lives in Lancaster Co. and has satellite TV, gets her NBC news from Hastings, 100mi west, not Omaha which is 40mi closer and is in another country as far as Hastings news is concerned.

If Lincoln dropped Hastings-Kearney and joined Omaha's market we would make a jump in market rating from 75th (Lincoln-Hastings-Kearney is 106th) which would also impact much more than mom's NBC station.

While erroneous, the article's interpretation of Omaha's market size makes a helluva lot more sense than Nielsen's.

That’s interesting to me, because in reading your stuff I’m wondering what it is – ideally – that you’re aiming for. What’s our ideal city? You’re always the critic, but if you didn’t have to be, if everyone listened to Randal O’Toole and followed your prescriptions, what would that look like?

Mr O'Toole's Response

[…]So, I’m a pragmatist. I don’t a vision of what a city should look like, I have a vision of a process that allows people to live in the kind of city they want to live in. There’s a significant amount of people that want to live in a city like Manhattan or San Francisco. And there’s a significant amount of people who want to live in a city like Houston. And what I want is a process that allows people to live in whatever kind of city they do want to live in. I think that if a process were implemented that basically allows property owners to do what they want with their property as long as they’re not directly harming other people, and basically allows people to decide how they’re going to get around based on the real cost of transportation – making sure that auto drivers pay the full cost of their travel and making sure that people who ride transit pay the cost of they’re transit, with, perhaps, subsidies for low-income people who need help – if they have that kind of system I think most American cities would look a little more like Houston and Omaha then San Francisco or New York. But we’d still have dense areas – we’d still have Manhattan, we’d still have downtown San Francisco, for the people who want to live in places like that."

As a car fanatic in addition to an Omaha fanatic, I often read the postings on a web-site called AutoBlog (http://www.autoblog.com). Today, I discovered that AutoBlog has several sister web-sites covering automotive happenings in other nations including China, Germany, Britain, and France. Each sister web-site is maintained, not by Americans, but by auto enthusiasts of that nation. Anyway, upon this discovery I decided to check out the French one to see what sorts of things are happening in the French world of cars. About half way down the first page I find an entry about the Dodge Viper ACR that included the large picture below...nothing out of the ordinary about the picture they chose, although I found the license plate a bit interesting....

WOODHOUSE!

Although it is to be noted that Woodhouse is one of the largest Viper dealers in the country (not all Dodge dealers are allowed to sell Vipers, you have to be approved through Chrysler first) I found it interesting that a car baring one of their dealer plates ended up on a French web-site for auto enthusiasts.

On yesterday's American Idol (the split NYC/Puerto Rico episode), after a somewhat thickly-accented song in an audition, Simon said something to the effect of "If we were looking for someone without an accent, we would have gone to Omaha."

Directly after that AI episode, my girlfriend and I caught the beginning of "Hells Kitchen", and one of the contestants is a culinary instructor from Nebraska, though they haven't mentioned a city. So far, she's kind of getting picked on by the a-hole d-bag head chef.

Omaha made the front page of USA Today on Monday. The article was about Skinner Baking Co. The article said "in Omaha" instead of "in Omaha, NE." Thought that was interesting.
