I guess I forgot about it dropping below $1 in the 90's. Yeah, I was driving a fair number of years prior to that.

like right after 9/11, a gas station here had a sale on gas at like $1.11/gallon, when it had spiked. They sold out in no time, and the lines to fill up were long. But that was 2001. When i started in college, it was like $0.87-$0.93. The economy was sweet then, too.

Probably about the same time I started driving, gas was going for $1.20-$1.35 when I was in high school, certainly incentive to not cruise around town like some of the other kids did. I remember in college, gas got down to around $0.70. As can be seen in the chart below, when adjusted for inflation, gas prices this summer finally climbed above what they were when I first started driving. Still not as bad as 90 years ago though, huh?

90 years ago cars and gas were a luxury item for the rich. Now that driving everywhere all the time is a God-given and Constitutionally mandated right and way of life, you'd think we would have found a slightly better system...

They jumped up over night about 13-15 cents. The news said the jump might have been from OPEC saying 'might' cut production --- sounds like a fear-rate.

$1.66 for regular today at Quick Trip 72nd & Woolworth. ...headed back up a bit. I'll bet it will be back over $3.00 by May. Next car I buy for commuting will get over 40mpg city, or be electric. Big 3 are you listening?

i think gas will drop again, due to this little hiccup in pricing and how it freaks people out. I thought i had read somewhere that many experts think the happy number is about $2.54/gallon. Apparently, a price like that isn't completely unbearable for us, but is high enough to not make stocks on petroleum worthless.

I still don't get why prices have jumped up there. We have actually seen prices drop a few cents the last couple days.

I don't get why people get shocked when gas goes up. It's just the same as I don't get why people |expletive| when it gets cold and snows like it's done every winter since the beginning of |expletive| time. I caught part of an interview on 60 Minutes with OPEC leaders and they said even though gas was going down they needed to do what they could to "hedge their bets".

All of the stations on 13th that had been hovering just below $1.50 for a week or so suddenly jumped this morning to just under $1.70. I'm sure this coincides with yesterday's announcement that OPEC was cutting production by 2.2 million barrels per day in January.

Makes sense right? Supply and demand and all that, right?

Then someone please explain to me how gas went up $.20 overnight while oil dropped $4 a barrel to its lowest price in 4+ years.

Now try to tell me that someone isn't |expletive| someone.

Well, the spot price for gas has gone up significantly in the last couple weeks, as seen below:

Image

One factor that may be driving this train is the unusual cold weather over much of the country, driving up demand for heating oil, which ultimately impacts the price we pay at the pump.

at some point, at some time, there is a possibility that there's a chance they may need to reduce production to keep pricing in check and help maintain demand.

How's it go? Putting the cart before the horse? i hate those bastards that run the oil industry.

Those bastards are spelled O. P. E. C.
We idiots bow to their every whims because in the past 30 years we have literally driven away from the direction of energy independence. Getting toward that goal will not be easy, will not involve gas being less than $3 or $4 or $5 a gallon, will take years of dedication, redirection of industries, a concerted government focus on developing green technologies, and, yes, public sacrifice. Barack Obama is just the president to work toward the goal of freeing the U.S. from the shackles that have all of us enslaved to the Middle Eastern sheiks and Latin American despots. The question is, will we as Americans be up to the challenge?

It involves much more than a concern for the environment, or even our economy. It is a matter of our national security.

My prediction is that gas doesn't go down until 1/4/09 and if oil rebounds by then, it won't go down at all.
