Streets, ignorance is criticizing the man (Roger Dixon) that was responsible for building arguably the most important building, the Qwest Center, (guess what, it doesn’t have retail!) in the state of Nebraska. Mr. Dixon is also responsible for the superb results that the convention center has produced since it opened. A better man could not be in charge of delivering the stadium on time (Omaha could lose the CWS if it is not completed on time) and operating the new facility. MECA is sitting on the most prime downtown real estate in Omaha with the Pinnacle site and other surface parking lots. They know this. The president of MECA is not ignorant. His boss is one of the most powerful businessman in the world and rumored to succeed Warren Buffet at Berkshire Hathaway. MECA can and someday might build an incredible area that incorporates significant retail in the downtown area. Right now Dixon’s job is to build the stadium for the home of the CWS for the next 25 years and “not a strip mall”.

Saying "We're building a baseball stadium, not a strip mall" is an ignorant thing to say. I don't know how you can argue that.

Not ignorant coming from someone who lives out at 168th Street... he knows a strip mall when he sees one.

It looks like it really won't be. Went down by the stadium site the other day and from all appearances it looked like they were hauling on pace with the Dodge Expressway in there. They had a near constant and well coordinated stream of equipment going back and forth and looked they were seriously starting to go to town. On a side note, I saw an article either in the Reader or City Weekly about a month ago that quoted the lead architect in saying they were still trying to include more retail if at all possible than the 5000 square foot figure that was put forth earlier this year. It talked about a faux brick wall that could easily be torn down to make way for more retail if and when the time comes. I thought the 5000 square foot retail was set in stone at this point so I'm not sure whats going to happen with that. However, I did appreciate the fact that they said they were at least still trying to work it in if at all possible. Either way this place is going to be beautiful when it is done.

No kidding guys. I've been slacking on the updates. I was amazed at what they got done over the two weeks I was gone. Here's a couple of update shots from 2 days ago.

First base side piling.
Image

Looking across to the 3rd base side piling. The whole 3rd base side is going to have amazing skyline views. It's going to make for some great ESPN shots. :)
Image

I'm going to take my camera into work and the the birdseye view. You can easily see the grandstand shape and they have probably half of the outfield seating piling in too.

good to see that kind of progress. Assuming they want to be done by about this time 2011 (to allow for time to make sure all the wrinkles are ironed out), it's coming along quicker than i thought it would be by now. I wonder if they will have any cranes up working on boxes by the end of the summer.

Good work Streets. I had also been thinking of an update from my spot, lots of outfield piling has gone in since my last one.

the parking lots look like land that was flooded, and the only thing above water are tiny hills with trees growing out of them. It's almost as though it were a 'sea' of parking :)

seriously, that's a |expletive| load of concrete and wasted space.

OmahaStadium.com has a webcam tab that says "coming soon". Hopefully it is up and going soon.

Also, as of March 23rd, 823 piles had been driven out of more that 1250.

They've done a TON of excavation since last week. The hole in the ground that will be the "sunken" field is taking shape.

Aaron, from the ground appears they are piling that dirt up, not excavating.

No he's right. They are building up the dirt around the outside, not lowering the field. But yes, you should take a pic tomorrow, as should I. :)

And since everyone is taking pics... Here is mine!

Looking north from the street behind the right/center field area towards the third base line, you can see them piling up dirt behind the pilings:

Last month I emailed the Omaha Stadium site asking why they didn't have a web cam up and working for the new ball park.

A gal responded and said she would talk to the I.T. people about it but she didn't think one was necessary because they were not close to putting up the steel.

MAGGIE O'BRIEN WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:TD Ameritrade apparently has reached an agreement to buy the naming rights for Omaha's new downtown baseball stadium.

The company and the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, which will operate the new stadium, are set to announce details of the agreement Wednesday morning, said Doug Parrott, a spokesman for MECA.

$750,000 per year for the first couple of years, then increasing to $1M per year.

i rather like it. My only complaint would be the need for maybe just a little more color with it, possibly by variation of brick.

Seems pretty easy to just walk into the park without a ticket. There's a lot of little guys there just walking around by themselves. They look pretty sketchy with their heads down and hands in their pockets; obviously trying to sneak into the game since their is no gate for taking tickets.
