That's new info to me, but would make lots of sense. I don't believe that Nebraska Med Ctr (as the hospital is called - UNMC is just the teaching arm) has moved as far along in the conversion of rooms to singles as many of the other area hospitals. Its a trend seen all across the country, not just for patient satisfaction, but also cuts down on infection rates, medication errors, and has all sorts of other benefits. To maintain the same # of beds, they need to increase the # of rooms to make this work. Any idea where they'd put this new patient tower?

In the long term plans (2006-2015) the parking lot directly East of the Clarkson Tower is one of the planned future sites for an additional tower, with new parking south of Harney at 41st. The Nebraska Medical Center is licensed for 689 patient beds - so as Clarkson and University rooms are being renovated to one bed rooms - additional rooms will be needed. 5 South and 6 South really need renovations - especially 5 South. However - even with beds available - many times there is a shortage of nurses and the number of patients that can be served hit a maximum and the doors have to be "closed".

Also the VA hospital is in dire need of renovations ($200 - $400 mill) and one of their options would be to build a new hospital near UNMC. UNMC recently acquired the 10 acres of the OPPD land which was designated for new research towers - plans could be changed - or more likely - if Saddle Creek is moved that would open up a better place for the VA to build a new hospital.

From what I understood, it's supposed to go in a court yard that currently exists. I'm not too familiar with the UNMC campus, though, so I'm not sure which one was being talked about. I'll try to get more details within the next few days.

Construction of the Research Center of Excellence II is on track for a December completion, said Ron Schaefer, director for UNMC Facilities Planning and Construction. "Construction is going well on the research tower," he said.

Workers have installed windows on the $76.5 million research tower, as well as enclosed the interaction space -- a high ceiling, glass area -- that connects the new facility to the adjacent Durham Research Center. The 10-level research tower -- nearly a mirror image of the Durham Research Center -- will contain 252,179 gross square feet with 98 state-of-the-art laboratories, as well as office space for investigators and laboratory support space.

I'd love do another aerial run with the new camera. Problem being, the guy out of Millard that Brad used retired and Iowa Helicopter that was at the CB airport seems to no longer has one there either. :( We can't seem to find a helicopter ride. :?

UNMC ready to open second research center

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2 ... d=10627170
RICK RUGGLES WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Inside the University of Nebraska Medical Center's new building of red brick and green glass is space, sweet space, the element that lures scientists.

A research building containing close to 100 laboratories will enable UNMC to recruit and retain more researchers and rake in more federal research money, Chancellor Harold Maurer says.

UNMC will hold a grand opening at 10 a.m. Wednesday for the Durham Research Center II, a $76 million, eight-story building connected to the Durham Research Center, which opened in 2003. Maurer hopes to increase UNMC's annual outside grant funding from about $82 million last year to $200 million by 2012.

"This is the latest, the best," Maurer said of Durham Research Center II. "It's important for the reputation of the state and the university and the Medical Center. You want to get out and you want to get known."

Patient care is important to academic medical centers, but it's research that produces the remedies and enhances the reputation, Maurer said. The chancellor said he hopes UNMC can start building a $100 million cancer research center within the next few years.

The goal is to attract "alpha scientists" - researchers whose work brings in federal grants of $1 million or more. Research grants typically go to scientists, not institutions, and scientists with big research grants are prized commodities, like pitchers with terrific fastballs.

What would UNMC want with an ice rink? I could see it in their long range plans with the new lake and relocated Saddlecreek, but its interesting to see it coming in to play now. I thought about student life, but does UNMC even have dorms?

Maybe they are hoping people will fall and injure themselves, thus providing more emergency room business. It does seem kind of odd.

UNMC looks to build eye institute

http://www.omaha.com/article/20091021/NEWS01/710219940
Rick Ruggles WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:The University of Nebraska Medical Center envisions building a $20 million eye institute two years from now.

The center would be named for Dr. Stanley M. Truhlsen, a longtime UNMC eye specialist who provided a key donation for the building.

“I love the University of Nebraska, the medical school and ophthalmology,” Truhlsen, 88, said Tuesday. He said he became a faculty member there in 1951 and practiced for 42 years.

UNMC and Truhlsen declined to say how much he donated. The medical center has commitments from donors to cover the institute's construction, spokesman Tom O'Connor said.
Rick Ruggles WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:UNMC also hopes to raise $10 million from private sources for an outpatient surgical center that would be attached to the 47,000-square-foot, four-level eye institute northeast of 40th and Leavenworth Streets.

I wonder how UNMC rates in terms of over all size when compared to other medical hospitals. It keeps getting bigger and bigger!

My family knew Dr. Truhlsen for about 30 years now, we never did like him he always came off as a prick. However this contribution ratifies that opinion.
But in actuality this has been in the planning for about a decade now they just needed time to amass the funds of course. UNMC has some awesome eye physicians some are world renowned and they are working in an antiquated congested building. They well deserve this new top notch facility it's well overdue.

Nice to see the UNMC area continuing to fill in and become more dense.

Though it doesn't seem to be the case, I hope this (rather boring) building has some sort of relation to the street, being right at the intersection of 40th and Leavenworth.

Funny, it's literally RIGHT across the street from Pauli's. That will be a funny sight during the CWS.

Five years ago the plans called for another copy of the buildings most recent built near Saddle Creek. I think this auxiliary type facility is better for this way the entire department is on it's own not sharing with other entities. And who cares if this is not some ground breaking prominent building. You can't get that every time don't act spoiled this should work just fine. Although I do agree the area is quite peculiar. I have a friend who lives a block east of there and plus being down there on shitty Leavenworth makes me go hmmm. I guess this way the doctors don't need to go far to pick up a date. For that reason I hope they build the entrance on the northwest corner.

I don't know (I assume so), but it seems like it's frozen in time as far as construction even though work continues to progress. Does anyone even know what the building is? The construction process on this building has been really bizarre.

Thanks for posting the renderings and map, Coyote. I hadn't seen the geriatric center.

Saddle Creek Road included in plan

http://www.omaha.com/article/20100904/N ... ed-in-plan
Rick Ruggles WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:An engineering firm now will consider several options for Saddle Creek and eventually make a recommendation to the Nebraska Department of Roads and the Federal Highway Administration.

The study will determine how many area properties would be affected, if any. The option of moving Saddle Creek west prompted considerable public discussion three years ago when a preliminary study commissioned by UNMC, the city and Destination Midtown suggested that up to 50 properties could be affected.

The city's primary interest in the Saddle Creek project is improving the cumbersome, confusing interchange at Dodge and Saddle Creek and addressing flooding problems nearby
Rick Ruggles WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Alternatives for Saddle Creek include no change; improvements to Saddle Creek without moving the road; moving it slightly west; and moving it west by roughly a block.

The feasibility study for the project estimates the cost of rebuilding the Saddle Creek-Dodge interchange at about $10 million. Improvements to Saddle Creek would cost about $35 million, whether it remained in its current location or was moved slightly west to allow for a wider road. Creating a new Saddle Creek about a block to the west would cost about $40 million with the additional expense in acquisition of properties, right of way and other costs.

The feasibility study, drawn up by the HDR engineering and architecture firm and other consultants, suggests that the $40 million to $50 million could come from UNMC and the federal government as well as city bonds and private developers. The feasibility study was completed last fall. HDR also will oversee the environmental assessment over the next two years.

I'm pretty sure those are renderings from the original Destination Midtown plan released about six years ago. Anyway, I'm glad it seems something is going to be done with this.

Boost to cancer tower

http://www.omaha.com/article/20101004/N ... ncer-tower
Michael O’Connor WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Construction could start as early as next year on the $100 million cancer research tower proposed for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, a UNMC official said.
Michael O’Connor WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:The goal is to open the 270,000-square-foot research tower in 2013, said Cowan, director of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

The tower will be built on the 15-acre site that UNMC acquired through a land swap with the Omaha Public Power District. The site is in the southwest corner of UNMC’s midtown campus.

Each floor of the tower will be dedicated to a different area of cancer research, such as lymphoma, breast, brain and prostate cancers. Researchers will focus on cancers that are existing or emerging research strengths for UNMC.

The tower is planned as the first phase of the cancer campus proposed for UNMC. Cowan said UNMC expects that the cancer project will be funded entirely with private dollars.

Since the article didn't specify the tower size, here's a size comparison: 1st National tower is 1Msqft, UP 1.3Msqft, and the Durham towers are 289K sqft/each.
