801 Chophouse at the Paxton

I took my girlfriend to the 801 in college in DSM... It was good, but when i order a ridiculously priced steak, i shouldn't have to pay ridiculously more to get a hunk of lettuce...

However, regardless, I think this is ridiculous. The brand recognition in Omaha of 801 is, well, non-existent.

Possibly feeling the squeeze from Sullivan's, the Chophouse has now added tacky valet parking on the east side of the building. I'm not fond of them taking an entire block of parking away for people too lazy walk from somewhere else. While I'm sure it's good for the Chophouse it's certainly not good to take away parking from the other tenants in the building.

Hopefully it's a temporary thing because it did look very thrown together. It could have been for a special event.

It's not the valet parking that bothers me. It's the taking away of the public parking for all businesses in the area for what will be seldom used private parking. It has nothing to do with a "big city" thing it's just wasteful. The last time I was in Chicago we valet parked at a restaurant that does a |expletive| load more business than the Chophouse could ever hope and they still had on street parking.

Why the heck do they need to block off the entire block length for valet parking? Every other place I've seen valet parking in an urban area they maybe have one spot in front of the door and that's it. Why does every single PARKING spot by the front door need to be blocked off. Wouldn't it make sense to keep it open for, oh I don't know, parking?

Plus the parking on that street is only parallel. You could easily still incorporate on street and valet parking. The Magnolia hotel manages to have a valet area and street parking so why can't the Chophouse? If I was any of the other businesses in the Paxton I would raise heck about this especially if I was running the new Crane Coffe that's on the same side.

I parked in a public parking spot in Arizona one time and the valet kid told me it was reserved for valet only. I told him it was a public space and if anything happened to my car while I was eating dinner I was holding him responsible. I had him by about 5 inches and 60 lbs, plus martini power.

Moral of the story? Public parking is public parking. Unless the police have put those "no parking" bags over the meters, they're yours to use as normal and the business can't do a thing about it.

Maybe there's some confusion. The spots by the Chophouse aren't the ones being used for the valet. They're blocking the spots off on the street and then taking the cars somewhere else.

Hence the permit process. I don't think it really works any different than if someone wants to throw, say, a wine festival and block off Jones from 10th to 11th. Permission from neighbors and tenants is part of that process. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

There's a difference between losing parking for a day long festival as opposed to losing it indefinitely. Maybe it was a one time thing but it really struck me as odd walking by yesterday.

May want to check into it some more. I'm pretty sure local businesses can lease public parking from the city therefore making it no longer public for whatever duration of time the space is leased.

The business can actually have your car towed. I also think there is a short term permit available.

At least that is the way I understood it.

I think S33 is right about the private businesses leasing the spots. The short term lease is the "no parking" bag that is put over the meter. A lot of contractors get those and there isn't an approval process that I know about- all they have to do is pay a fee. For long term leases, the city cuts the meter off the top of the post and puts a sign that either says no parking, 10 min. parking, loading zone, or something else to keep people from parking in the spot. There are a few leased spots near the corner of 17th and harney, and along farnam between 16th and 17th.

oh, one other note... I don't think Crane Coffee is going to open up any time soon in the Paxton. I looked in last week and the space doesn't look like anything has been done to it. I would say they are still a few months off even if they started working on it tomorrow.

Went to the 801 last night. I have been there once a year for the past three years. While it is expensive, its is REALLY good!

Sorry, the cell phone just doesn't do this food justice!

3. 801 Wedge Salad! (Delicious!)


4. 12oz Fillet topped with Bone Marrow Butter. (Phenomenal!)


5. The Perfect Medium Rare of said 12oz Fillet!


6. Side of Macaroni and Cheese. (This Mac and Cheese was so rich, it was crazy. Probably 10,000 calories too).


7. Hash browns with aged cheddar cheese!


Not a place we can afford to go very often, but if you get the opportunity to go, its awesome!

801 is excellent. Wildly expensive for a meal. But more reasonable if you consider it to be a special treat. If you have the dough it is worth it.

I will say that while 801 is certainly pricey, its nowhere near the priciest in town. To be honest, I'd even say its a relative bargain at the "top tier" restaurants. You'll pay signifcantly more for a meal at Flatiron, Omaha Prime, or Mahogany, all restaurants in that same category.

I read today that they have closed one location in downtown Minneapolis but so far their other locations remain open. Skyrocketing beef prices were cited as a reason for the bankruptcy.

Speaking from a personal perspective we have reduced our beef consumption by at least 50% this year due to insane supermarket beef prices. Pork and poultry are much more reasonably priced. We purchase beef regularly when we are in México and even there the prices have definitely risen, but not like they have in the US. We can still get ribeye and skirt steaks for the equivalent of about $7-8 per pound.

You can absolutely spend more money at any number of places in Omaha than 801. There's just no place that I'm aware of that has a +$265 seafood tower appetizer for 4 people listed on the menu.
