Minn. man guilty of driving drunk — in lounge chair

Dennis LeRoy Anderson hit a parked car after knocking back eight beers or so at the Keyboard Lounge in Proctor, Minn. Nothing remarkable about that — except for the notable fact that he was driving a pimped-out motorized lounge chair. Anderson, 62, told police he was driving just fine until a woman jumped on his luxury La-Z-Boy and caused the crash in August 2008.

Anderson's blood-alcohol level was 0.29%, three times the legal limit. On Monday, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and will spend six months in jail. He has a prior DWI conviction; it is unclear whether that occurred in his chair or another vehicle. Attention, lounger lizards: Anderson had to forfeit his ride, and Proctor police plan to auction it.

Proctor Deputy Police Chief Troy Foucault said the chair was powered by a converted lawnmower with a Briggs & Stratton engine. It has a stereo, cup holders and other custom options, including different power levels. A National Hot Rod Racing Association sticker is posted on the chair’s head rest. The chair had a small steering wheel, about a third of the size of a golf cart’s, coming straight up from the middle of the La-Z-Boy.

CARROLL, Iowa - Police had no trouble identifying two men accused of trying to break into an apartment.

Police were responding to a call about an attempted burglary when they pulled over a car matching the alleged suspects' vehicle.

Court: Microsoft violated patent; can't sell Word

A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld a $290 million judgment against Microsoft Corp. and issued an injunction that will prevent the sale of its popular Word software.

The court injunction is set to go into effect Jan. 11. Microsoft has said such a bar would prohibit the sale of all currently available versions of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office.

Why anyone would buy a copy of Word (or Office) anymore is beyond me. OpenOffice does 99.99% of what it does, is read/write compatible and is free.

If you like DropBox, you should try Microsoft Live Mesh Beta. You'll wonder how you lived without it. (The only drawback is Mesh doesn't have an iPhone app-yet). Mesh has more free storage, and the online desktop allows you to RDC into any computer connected to your Mesh. It is far superior.

Well I've completely supplemented my entire use of Sharepoint with Dropbox. Granted, I used very few features of Sharpoint, but Dropbox has been much more efficient for the uses I've had. (i.e. sharing documents and automatic user generated document updates)

DropBox is actually being incorporated into a product we are building, that is why we use it. We also do not pay for storage at this time.

For your use, you're right. If all you're using SharePoint for is to store documents, then all you really need is a shared network folder. Why buy and maintain a sharepoint server just for a pretty library?

Actually, I didn't get rid of phonebooks (though I should, since they're completely irrelevant and I literally haven't used one in a decade). I did get rid of fold out maps and showed the sales guys how to save hours planning their trips. Now, instead of drawing |expletive| lines on giant paper they download maps to their phones from our CRM software. Boom. An hour saved for every salesperson that ever goes on a road trip ever.

I still maintain the vast vast VAST majority of Office users (and SharePoint users, for that matter) don't need 99% of the toolset. Period. Obviously there are those that do and use it. Never said otherwise. Everyone else, however, is being bilked.

Office is like the guy with 40 x 40 yard that buys the 56" dual-deck $4000 rider lawnmower so he can mow in 42 seconds.

...and for a very long time they have offered the MS Home Use program that allows enterprise employees to purchase the full office suite for around $20.00 (check with your company to see if they offer the program).

Can I buy that for use at the office? If not it's irrelevant.

*-edit: Did a little digging. Unless I'm totally off base, the home user license is for employees to buy a copy of different MS products to use at home IF their employer already has a valid license at the office, and the employer has to participate in the program (not sure what "participate" means, either).

So, like I said before: irreleFAIL

That is exactly what makes it an industry standard. You would have to work in dozens of different careers in order to use all the tools available. No matter what you're doing, MS Office will have all the tools you need to do your job 99.9% of the time (I can pull numbers out of my butt too!). OpenOffice doesn't have that flexibility.

You said MS uses its monopoly to push Office at a full price point to everyone in the world. I gave examples of their own competing products and discount programs available. I wasn't speaking specifically of the workplace with that example since employers pay for Office, not employees.

That happened to be the most recent one I stumbled across, yes.

Every trend in computing is backing up his (and my) stance: Office is overpriced bloatware foisted on businesses by a monopoly to prop up a failing business model. The only people I know that don't at least partially agree are the ones whose livelihoods depend on selling stuff to people that don't know any better. MS is screwed if they can't leverage their "industry standard" status (btw, "industry standard" doesn't mean it isn't shitty) with the full price version of the Office suite. I wouldn't want to be a fax machine salesman right now, either.

For the tiny, tiny niche of people that use all the features of Office, it's obviously a great value - but those people are in the vast minority. For the niche of people who either steal software or don't have to pay for it themselves, they really don't care if it is a good value. For the people that have to pay $400 a copy for basic, basic spreadsheet and word processing capabilities (and the ability to open and make minor edits to said documents from others) just to be using the "industry standard", it's overpriced |expletive|.

I can view PDFs on a free viewer from Adobe. I don't have to buy Final Cut Pro to watch movies on a free QuickTime player. If there were an Office Lite for $40/person or $500 for a site license of up to 20 users or something like that, I'd cut them some slack. If there's an option out there better than the free OpenOffice suite to meet those needs, I'm also all ears.
