Aksarben Village (67th & Center)

I believe an architectural firm has started construction of their new offices on the west side of 67th st.

My question is, where is the entertainment district (theatres, nice restaurants, other things to do)? This place won't really come alive until the theatres open.

On the west side of 67th street is where zone 5 or the entertainment district will be and something has started there. DLR is to the east of that on frances street. Im not sure what is being built on the west side of 67th. does anyone know anything?

It indicates that the theatres, and some restaurants and entertainment options will be open by autumn 2010.

This reminds me a little bit of KC's 'Live' district... or at least the renderings do... does anyone think this area will be anywhere near as bustling as what the renderings portray? For that matter... is KC's 'Live' district this bustling (outside perhaps during the Big 12 tournament/etc) ?

It could be... I worry a bit that the neighborhood is not "mixed" enough. I think those buildings should be taller with residential units on the extra floors. So far Pinhook is the only development down there to mix residential with commercial. That other apartment complex might as well be anywhere because it has isolated itself from the rest of the development. I worry if they don't mix in enough residential the place will be busy in the day and dead at night.

Whoa, great renderings!

I have confidence that the surrounding neighborhoods are sufficiently mixed (young singles, newly married/young families, as well as older generations), not to mention the proximity to student populations.

And that's great news about Zone5!

I don't think it's been mentioned, but Aspen Athletic Club, which is open in a temporary location on the south side of 63rd and Center, will be the fitness center tenant at Zone 5.

They're a small, regional chain of fitness centers (mainly in the Des Moines area, as well as locations in Kansas and Oklahoma, I believe). This will be their first Nebraska location, and I've heard that the owner doesn't want to have more than about 10 locations total.

It looks like a great fit for AK Village, and I think it was smart of them to open up a temporary work out facility in the neighborhood to attract members before the opening of the main facility.

I've heard the equipment is top notch and they offer a host of classes, child care, etc. (I know this because my pregnant sister and brother in law just joined). I guess they're offering REALLY good introductory rates, like you can sign up now for just $19 a month or something with no contract.

I would definitely call them for more details if interested.

Nice plans. It looks like 67th Street could use a street-car line with arrivals/departures every 15 minutes to UNO, UNMC, Mutual and DTO. I think that would help make up for the lack of residential housing on site...or will that eventually fill some of the green space?

The space immediately adjacent to Juice Stop to the south is having work done and being readied for a tenant. I asked the kid working at Juice Stop if he knew who was going to open there.

He said he didn't know for sure, but he heard it was going to be some sort of bakery that also sells alcohol.

Sounds like it could be an interesting concept.

Its a place called Jones Brothers' Cupcakes.... I don't know much more about it than that. A friend posted a pic of their Liquor License notice on her FB page, as she thought it was odd (but heaven) that a cupcake place would also sell booze. And right next door to her office.

Well, I'm officially in my new office. And, as it turns out I might have the best view of some of the development yet. My windows over look the Zone 5 construction and BCBS. Here's a couple quick pics. Excuse the boxes in the view and poor quality as I took this from a year old G1 cell phone.

Hopefully I'll be able to take a couple photos a months.

Our building is pretty nice. Most of our company has already been there for a while and we were one of the last departments to be moved. Everyone's been really impressed by the plans and I know our company has been taking advantage of the hotel on site.

I don't really know what else to say but it'll be pretty exciting watching the place develop from a front row seat. I'm just dreading the day the movie theatre opens and I'm going to be wishing it was me seeing a movie!!

Those look good! The good ol' Remcon crane is in that second picture! I looked around the forum but couldn't find anything but I think its called the mid america plaza just west of Aksarben Village on the northeast ish corner of 72nd and center. But when I was driving by today they were tearing down one of the bigger office buildings that has been empty for a while. And the one right next to it seems like its been empty for a while too so maybe they will tear down that building too! Has anyone else seen this or know what's going on?

I did a photo shoot at the Marriott Courtyard last week. Its is a beautiful hotel. It was really cool and modern inside!

I think the next waive of things is the Zone 5 development, with the movie theater and Aspen Fitness, which is supposed to be opening late summer. I think the vast majority of the fully constructed space is occupied....

There are some signs up next to juice stop for the jones brothers cupcakes or something like that. the DLR building is looking good along with the theater/gym.

The DLR building looks much larger in person than in the renderings.

Speaking of Aksarben Village. I joined Aspen Athletic Club. They are in the temp building south of AK village, but their permanent building is being built by the Blue Cross Building.
