I can view PDFs on a free viewer from Adobe. I don't have to buy Final Cut Pro to watch movies on a free QuickTime player. If there were an Office Lite for $40/person or $500 for a site license of up to 20 users or something like that, I'd cut them some slack. If there's an option out there better than the free OpenOffice suite to meet those needs, I'm also all ears.
This is the 2nd time I'm posting this link:
http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/archives/181488.asp

Microsoft is offering a free version of Word and Excel.

More info about FREE office online:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office_2010
Office 2010 will mark the debut of free online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, which will work in popular web browsers (Windows Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari) but not in the Opera browser or Netscape Navigator . Microsoft has confirmed that it will be released in the first half of 2010, and a public beta was made available in November 2009.[8] A new edition of Office, Office Starter 2010, will replace the current low-end home productivity software, Microsoft Works.
So why should companies be moving away from MS Office to Google Apps right before Office becomes free/ad driven?

1) Ad driven ≠ free. Ad driven = ad driven, and for a professional app it sucks. Always has. Always will. It has no place in a professional environment. (Or is the free online version of Office 2010 not ad driven? I'm under the impression it is.)

2)
Office Starter 2010 will only be available on new PCs
While this sounds like what I'm looking for, where is the $50/seat version without the new machine? We just spent ±$7000 on new computers in the last 12 months, which will last us until MS stops supporting XP or I find an alternative to all our MS products. (Care to take bets on which happens first?)

3) Unless I'm completely and totally missing something, none of the things you're pointing to are on par with a complete, free version of OpenOffice that has 100% of the functionality the vast majority of offices need.

4) Most importantly, none of the features we're talking about are even here yet. We've been using OpenOffice without significant issue for 5 years already.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/personal ... index.html
A dating site that markets itself as an elite community for beautiful people with a "strict ban on ugly people" has axed about 5,000 members for packing on the pounds during the holiday season.

The international site BeautifulPeople.com threw out members after they posted photos "revealing that they have let themselves go," according to a company statement.

"As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld," said Robert Hintze, founder of BeautifulPeople.com. "Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded."

This story was also in the OWH on Saturday

http://www.omaha.com/article/20100102/NEWS01/701029883
This message took four loads of liquid manure to create. A load equals 400 bushels, and a bushel is 77.4 pounds of manure. That makes a total of 123,840 pounds of manure in this missive

I grew up on a farm and never once thought to measure manure by the bushel!

ZWINGLE, Iowa (AP) — And what did you get for your birthday?

Carole Kleis’ husband, Dick, known for surprising his wife, did so in a big way Tuesday, one day before her 67th birthday.

He used a manure spreader to write “HAP B DAY LUV U” in a farm field visible from the living room of the couple’s rural Zwingle home.

“Someone said, ‘Do something you’re good at,’ so I made a card with my ‘pen,’” Dick said. “I’ve just run out of stuff to do for her birthday.”

Dick said it took about three hours and four loads of liquid manure to create the message.
For the record  NEBUGEATER does not equal BUGEATER    !!!!!!!

Man Rams Car Into Restaurant, Eats Breakfast

Investigators think Charles Pierce stepped on the gas instead of hitting the brake while trying to park, but instead of panicking and amid all that debris, he calmly got out of the sedan and placed his order. My coworker was telling me about this guy and his freaky apt incident that happened in his home in New York. Watch the video but make sure you read the "more info" section on the right side to learn about the guy and what was really happening.

I watched it with my team this morning and we were all screaming (note: it's more "hard to believe" than "terrifying"). Can't believe someone would really do this!!!

I never would have guessed this one....

McGwire admits steroid use

http://www.omaha.com/article/20100111/NEWS/701119891
NEW YORK (AP) -- Mark McGwire's voice repeatedly cracked with emotion during a telephone interview with The Associated Press as he recounted telling his wife, parents and son that he had used steroids.

His voice breaking, McGwire says, "It's the first time they've ever heard me, you know, talk about this. I hid it from everybody."

During a 20-minute phone call Monday, McGwire says he called commissioner Bud Selig and Cardinals manager Tony La Russa earlier in the day to personally apologize.

McGwire says that when he used steroids, he never imagined he would have to talk about it to national media.

McGwire said he also used human growth hormone, and he didn't know if his use of performance-enhancing drugs contributed to some of the injuries that led to his retirement, at age 38, in 2001. “That's a good question,” he said.

on the news today, jim siedlecki made a valid point (in the morning, no less!) He said that MLB players face such intense scrutiny if they admit to it, but NFL players get shunned for a short time, and then people just forget about it a year later. heck, people are still p-o'ed at Pete Rose for betting, and that was forever ago! I know baseball is America's favorite past-time, but i did find the difference somewhat ironical.

I thought this was... strange. That kid must love candy.

Candy burglar leaves bloody trail
Police followed a trail of blood and candy Tuesday night that led to a case of burglary at Omaha Central High School.
The incident began about 9 p.m. Tuesday when a young man approached a worker at the school and asked to use a phone because his ride hadn't shown up. The youth was allowed inside to make a call.
About a half hour later, the worker saw the young man walking down a hallway and told him if his ride didn't show up soon, the worker would have to call police.
Minutes later, the worker heard a crash in an office where candy is stored. He found broken glass and blood. When police arrived, they followed a trail of fruit snacks, Twix and 3 Musketeer candy bars, along with blood, to a gymnasium exit but didn't find the youth.

Later, police were alerted to a 16-year old who had checked in at Creighton University Medical Center with cuts. The teen was arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Omaha Public Schools spokeswoman Luanne Nelson said the youth was a Central student and admitted to police at the hospital that he cut himself at the school. She said a fire extinguisher was used to smash a window in the door of the office. Nelson said the school uses the office to store candy for fundraising.
Under the district's code of conduct, the student could face expulsion.

Karaoke is very popular in a lot of Asian cultures. There are a fair number of Asian foreign-exchange students here at the University of Illinois and they get very excited when events include karaoke.

Omaha Woman Insists She's Not Dead Yet
Social Security Had Omaha Woman Listed As Deceased

KETV wrote:An Omaha woman found that even a personal visit to the local Social Security office wouldn’t convince officials she was alive. Jeana Mae Bryant found it’s more difficult than she thought to prove she’s not dead. On her fourth visit to the Social Security office, KETV NewsWatch 7’s I-Team went with her. The managers were all in a meeting, but an assistant manager pulled her case. A document indicated her death was “still pending.” “We are working on removing the death information from your prior record,” the assistant manager told Bryant.

ESPN suspends Kornheiser for comments on Hannah Storm's attire
USA Today wrote:ESPN announced Tony Kornheiser, co-host of its weekday Pardon The Interruption, is on a two-week suspension that started Monday for comments about ESPN anchor Hannah Storm.
Tony Kornheiser wrote:"Hannah Storm in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today. She's got on red go-go boots and a catholic school plaid skirt ... way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now. She's got on her typically very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body ... I know she's very good, and I'm not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won't ... but Hannah Storm ... come on now! Stop! What are you doing? ... She's what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point."

Shortly before I had moved into the Rorick some old dude on oxygen was smoking and the tank exploded. All of the windows were blasted out but everything was kept inside. I saw it one day and it was crazy how dark and burnt the whole place looked.

N.Y. Chef Earns Fans, Critics With Cheese Made From Human Breast Milk

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,588667,00.html
fox news wrote:"Mommy's Milk Cheese" is exactly what it sounds like: cheese made from the breast milk of a nursing mother.

In Angerer's case, that mother is his longtime fiancee, Lori Mason, who was producing more milk than she knew what to do with while nursing their now 10-week-old daughter, Arabella.

"We see this supply in the freezer and basically can't stuff anymore breast milk in there," Angerer told FoxNews.com.

So, the couple started researching how they could donate the milk but discovered it was a "lengthy process."

"We realized we were going to have to throw a lot of it out, pour this liquid gold down the drain, and we were not going to do that," Angerer said. "So, me being a chef, we said, 'Hey, let's make some cheese!'"
fox news wrote:"People were sort of intrigued, interested, put off, fascinated, disgusted — whatever it is, people were obviously reacting and responding to it," she said.

Jason Botos Needed Help Getting Out Of Car

Hmm. Something's a little off with that graph. I'm pretty sure that if you have a BAL of .09 or .10 you aren't back to being "sober/normal."

Certainly not; it's simply comparing the dual effect of alcohol as both a stimulant and a depressant. Just as with a stimulant or depressant alone, you will still be in an altered state of mind with judgement, reaction time, etc impacted.
