Tide, Broncos, Buckeyes lead the pack
College Football Live's Top 25
College Football Live breaks down its preseason Top 25 for 2010.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
3. Boise State Broncos
4. Texas Longhorns
5. Virginia Tech Hokies
6. TCU Horned Frogs
7. Florida Gators
8. Iowa Hawkeyes
9. Nebraska Cornhuskers

If the Cornhuskers are going to repeat as Big 12 North champions and have a chance to unseat Texas or Oklahoma as the best team in the conference, their offense is going to have to make tremendous strides. Quarterback Zac Lee missed the spring after undergoing surgery on his right elbow, allowing Taylor Martinez to unveil his running ability from the pocket. The running game should be better with Roy Helu Jr. and Rex Burkhead coming back, but the Cornhuskers need much more from the passing game. Replacing All-America defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh certainly won't be easy, but Nebraska should again be very stingy on defense.

10. Oregon Ducks
11. Wisconsin Badgers
12. Oklahoma Sooners
13. Miami Hurricanes
14. LSU Tigers
15. USC Trojans
16. Pittsburgh Panthers
17. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
18. Arkansas Razorbacks
19. Penn State Nittany Lions
20. Oregon State Beavers
21. Florida State Seminoles
22. Cincinnati Bearcats
23. Georgia Bulldogs
24. Stanford Cardinal
25. North Carolina Tar Heels

Craig James had Nebraska at #2

Huskers get commitment from four-star QB
Nick Rubek WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Starling, a four-star quarterback prospect out of Gardner, Kan., gave NU a verbal commitment Saturday, according to rivals.com. He chose the Huskers over offers from defending national champion Alabama, Notre Dame, Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville and Texas Tech.

A projected first-round pick in next summer’s Major League Baseball draft, however, Starling could have a multi-million dollar deal thrown his way at this time next year. And a major decision to make. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Starling touched 95 mph on the radar gun numerous times this spring, even getting to 96 once VanRheen said. The coach wouldn’t be surprised to see 97 or 98 next season. Starling followed up a sophomore season in which he hit .581 by hitting .508 as a junior.

This will likely be taken as Husker hate but it's really not. If the kid gets drafted in the first round for baseball and doesn't go, he's mentally challenged. Any two sport stud should pick baseball or hoops over football. Not as tough on the body and the main reason, contracts. Guaranteed contracts to be specific. In the NFL, they can cut your |expletive| pretty much at any given point. That's why they all want the big signing bonus. Go play ball and get every penny.

Actually pitchers straight out of high school have a very high failure rate. If he really likes baseball more he is better off going to college and going in the draft later.

Nothing stopping him from playing pro ball for a couple years to see if it sticks and then coming back to play NCAA football, either.

That seems like a backwards way to do it tho. I mean a few years he will still be in the minors so he wouldn't know and he comes back to play he won't have the same opportunities. He needs to choose a sport for his future and go with it now.

Didn't a Michigan quarterback do that a few years ago - played minor league for a while then played quarterback.

Khiry Cooper is already trying to do this for the Huskers and has completed seasons of both sports.

Was a 5th round baseball draft pick of the Angles and at that level in the draft there is still real $$$.

He is having some trouble making any real strides with either squad though. And last time we had a possible 1st rounder was Carl Crawford and he opted for the money so NU has seen it go both way.

But a first round pick that signs is an instant millionaire. He can always go back to college. He won't always be able to instantly become a millionaire overnight.

The 20th draft pick from 2009 signed for less than 1.4 million. I know that is good money, but not as much as many think. Matt Purke the TCU stud that went 14-0 this season turned down 6 million b/c pitching in college earns you more money in the long run.

Not sure but I think the $$ that Matt Purke "turned down" was less than the 6 million. What I remember hearing is that the 6 million is the amount they had agreed on and then in the 11th hour with the team in bankruptcy trouble the offer was reduced by a LOT. That is what he backed away from. Ether way it was a lot but he has potential to make it up and more as you stated.

Yeah, he was set to sign at $6 million but the Rangers reneged due to its impending bankruptcy. So he walked. If he'd been presented with a $6 million contract, he would've signed.

And I'd take $1.4 million straight out of high school.

And college only earns you more money assuming you stay healthy and on top of your game. If you blow out your arm (which tends to happen with some frequency since college coaches are notorious for overusing their aces) or suddenly can't find the strike zone to save your life, good luck getting that million dollar contract.

Correct. He's doing pretty much the same thing Antonio Bell did. Its crazy we were able to get him here and credit the Pelini's for that.

Oh BTW, NU will be 11-3 this year. Book it.

Just another annual Rome and Pelini interview. Good interview that wrapped up with Pelini inviting Rome to Lincoln like always. Pelini him he would get a sideline pass for the Texas game.

Sucks that we've had so many injuries.

So I'm hearing David and Whaley will start. Who knows though.

And Martinez at QB? Could be an interesting year.

Nothings official, but yeah, I've heard Martinez as well. However, there's a possibility that he'll "start" these first two games, but not be the number one QB. I fully expect this to be a competition through the first few games regardless.

For playing one of the worst teams in D1 football, that win was less than impressive - with Martinez being an obvious exception. The defense was lousy and reminded me nothing of what it was last year.

Statistically speaking, the game was nearly identical in total yardage (on both sides of the ball) to last year's Arkansas State game, and better than last year's opener against Florida Atlantic (both Sun Belt teams, same as WKU).

Take that for what it's worth, of course.

From what I saw out of Washington, KSU and Texas yesterday, I like our chances against all of them. @ Okie State becomes the big question mark for the time being.

True. I thought most of the top ten looked pretty unimpressive, too. And with Missouri's lousy play, I certainly like our chances to win the north. Hopefully Nebraska's defensive play isn't indicative of the rest of the season, though.

Now, if there was anything good that came from yesterdays games, it was watching Ole Miss and Moussoli (sp?) choke in OT to Bellevue East.

I'm not too worried about the D. We gave up almost 400 yards to FAU last year, and they really didn't start to fully click until the Missouri game. The injuries do suck, and I think those are what could hold us back.

Martinez looked good, albeit WKU. His speed could get us some first downs that we desperately needed last year though. Niles should stop buttering up his hands during pre-game.

I'll agree with Pelini when he said our D was "embarrassing" yesterday. We looked fine in the first quarter and then we just went to sleep. Granted, we got people starting that weren't expecting to due to injuries, but we still looked soft. Our linebackers are particularly of huge concern. Say what you will about KSU, but they've got a solid RB. If we play them like we did yesterday, they'll run that bull up the middle on us all night.

If we don't get things straightened out, or guys don't step up, on defense we're going to have problems all year long....starting with Washington. One thing I can say for sure, I wouldn't want to be a defensive player in practice this week.
