Review: Lalibela signals happy evolution

Something magical happened in June near Cass Street and Saddle Creek Road: A check-cashing spot in a former Pizza Hut reopened as Omaha's second Ethiopian restaurant. But the fare at Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant is everything Ethiopian food should be: affordable, sharable and flavorful — with a layered heat that lingers on lips and fingers long after a meal. Lalibela's a gem in the rough, another nice reflection of our city's growing diversity, and the best thing to happen to a former Pizza Hut in a good long while.

Looks like Lalebela wants to move to 65th and Ames, and call it Cleopatra's, but neighbors are tired of this site having alcohol served and violence ensuing there. I almost went to eat at their place near Saddle Creek and Cass, to try Ethiopian food but never made it.

I've driven past the place on Ames, I think it used to be an Asian buffet, but rarely think about even wanting to eat on Ames east of 66th. Maybe I am too prejudiced...

This place is good, it's a shame that they'll be moving, I might make it to their new location but it's a bit further away.

Says they have a Class I liquor license they want to move with them.
But one of those opposing pointed out they have lost their license in the past...

Just learned that the owner of the former building, because of religious reasons, did not want alcohol In that building, one of the reasons the restaurant wanted to relocate.

Apparently they are operating at the Ames Ave location now, but their liquor license was denied because of the history of this new location (78 police calls in the last 3 years?), but they can apply again in 6 months.

Anyone been here? It's been on my list of places to try forever, but I just haven't made it in and was just recently reminded it existed. I wouldn't mind seeing a current menu, but they don't seem to have much of an online presence so you have to rely on dated customer photos.

I haven’t been there before but I’ve heard nothing but good things from people who have been there. I’ve gone on google and Yelp to see the menu/food options.

Lalibela is incredible. We get the injera quite often.

It’s been a few years but their food is delicious.
