This will scare some of you. I warn you! Sioux City as of midnight tonight is forecast to spike in river levels. This is the serge. Take a look for yourself.

Went down around NP Dodge Park today and it's crazy how much water is already down there.

I've seen a huge black helicopter flying around the river today. I heard it may have been used to drop sandbags along the river. They have done the same in Sioux City.

Flooding may close I-29 soon

As of 3PM today.

The current release from Gavin's Point is now 120,000CFS.
Tomorrow the release goes up to 130,000CFS.
And then 150,000CFS by June 16th.

Now there is reports of people going door to door in CB telling people that they must evacuate NOW. Covered on Ch7 news tonight. I am sure the logic behind this is more than a practical joke. Some people are just SICK!!!

My parents are miffed that they haven't been able to go fishing all year. Apparently, all the parks lining the Missouri have been closed the whole year.

I hope no major catastrophes result from the river flooding. Isn't the max height supposed to be reached sometime in July?

Montana got more rain in a couple weeks than they normally get all year. Kind of hard to plan for that...

Wow, you're right about that. If we had not been holding back extra water in the reservoirs so we could have 'controlled flooding' for the environmentalist radical element, we would have been better able to manage this. Thanks, Sierra Club!!

Ok, now that we've exchanged partisan platitudes, weather upriver is what has actually made this happen, more than government action. Colorado snowpack is between 240% and 360% of normal, and exteme rainfalls in the Dakotas and Montana have caused much higher runoff levels.

The Corps of Engineers generally does a really superior job of managing these events. nobody's perfect; but I think they're doing all they can.

We're supposed to get another two feet of river height in the Lewis and Clark Landing area by the weekend.

That should put it right at the edge of the pavement. It's gonna get interesting.

I have told people that same thing. The Army Corps of Engineers is not the blame here. It's those d*mn Bird lovers and the EPA who are responsible for this disaster.

2 - 2 1/2 added by this weekend to bring the river gage in Omaha to about 32.5 Projected Crest is now to be between 34 and 38 for Omaha so we are FAR from seeing the worst soon.

Airport: Ready For Any Kind Of Flood

1. The Canadian National Railroad Mainline has been cut, ballast removed, and levee built:

2. Big Lake Park has a new boat ramp.... to the right of that road is where the Canadian National Railroad Mainline was cut.

3. UP Has equipment staged and ready and they are also raising the mainline through big lake.

This will get interesting in the coming couple of weeks. What is so incredibly unusual about this flood is that it is taking place in super slow motion. Most floods are in and out in a day or two. This seems to be going to take a month or more to play out. The difference is that the land below may be devastated, with all of the trees and other plant life killed. I guess time will tell.

According to Radar, the got about 2" of rain today up by Missouri Valley.

The flooding will soon be affecting the Interstate Highway system in the northern parts of the Omaha metro. There are reports that as early as tonight perhaps, that Interstate 29 between the 25th Street Exit in Council Bluffs (the northern-most exit on I-29 in C.B.) and the I-29\I-680 North interchange up near Loveland will be closed due to flooding, and also the short stretch of I-680 between I-29 and the Nebraska border will also be closed. This will not just be for a few days or weeks it appears, it looks like this important stretch of Interstate could be shut down for months, due to the expected continued high releases from Gavins Point Dam.

Also I would expect that in the next week, parts of I-29 south to the Iowa\Missouri border will be affected by flood waters.

Here is a picture (crappy Blackberry photo) of the flood waters nearing the interstate, and in other places it was even closer, on I-29 just south of the I-29\I-680 South (Crescent) interchange that I took this morning on my way heading into Council Bluffs.

River sets post-dam record

Water Closes In On Surfside Restaurant
