I think you're right.

It's one thing for dirt levees to hold for a couple days, or even a week. It's pretty unrealistic to think that they're going to hold for months.

I figured I'd top off all this great news by saying South Dakota is getting hammered right now with extremely heavy rains causing flash flood warnings throughout the entire middle region of the state.

Hard to tell from the distance, but there still looks to be at a minimum 5-7' of levee there. There doesn't appear to be immediate danger of over-topping. The bigger worry for Eppley right now is probably any potential seepage behind the levee.

We drove over the 75 bridge on Sunday, the Platte was very high. To the east, the platte is flooding on both north and south banks. The Papio is backed up a couple of miles, but hasn't come out of it's channel yet.

I really hope someone gets fired or sued at the Omaha COE, but they are still saying they did nothing wrong.

Isn't there an alternative route there?

The "how are you going to get there" question is becoming really important!

I'm supposed to be in Sioux City, on Monday, for a business meeting. I'm beginning to wonder what route is even available.

How many crossings are closed up north? The Blair bridge? Decatur? South Sioux?

Take Hwy 275 to Fremont and go north on 77

Well, I don't think Blair Bridge is closed - yet. But Hwy 30, and the Mo Valley interchange is (as I understand it) under water. 75 North of Decatur is, from what I've heard, flooded. And South Sioux City is underwater.

I'm thinking that my best possibility is to head East, into the Loess Hills, and take some of those blacktops and country roads up to Highway 20, then backtrack into Sioux City.

Seriously think about the route through Fremont. Good roads. Many are two lanes each way. Not going to be effected by the river. Worst stretch is a 15 mile run with constriction near Uhling. It is a few more miles but I have drive this to SC and it is not much more time.

You will always be able to get there the back way.... If the back way ever floods, we are all screwed!

Take Broadway East
Near downtown CB it will turn in to East Kanesville Blvd
Take a left on North Broadway
Go North for a ways to Mynster Springs Rd
Left on Mynster Springs Rd
Follow Mynster to Monument Rd
Right on Monument Rd
Go to the top of the hill on Mounumet Rd
Lewis and Clark on left

Mr.Nuke wrote:River silt can do a number on farm land. As a farm owner I sympathize. I also realize that many of these farmers are farming land that was only made possible by the ACOE's artificial channeling of the river.
This is true - or at least largely true. That farm ground would have been tillable probably 3 out of 4 years, regardless of what the ACOEs did with the levees. It was being farmed prior to that.

Even so, what's so tough for so many people is that this is also financially devastating. These farmers bought this land, and most of them are still making payments on it.

Can you imagine how many bankruptcies we're going to see as a direct result of this flooding?

Looks like they had Lot D cleaned up by this evening. The city is playing one heck of a game of 'Whack-a-mole' so far.

Although it REALLY stinks down towards the airport... we're obviously getting some serious combined sewer/waste back flow.

Anybody taking bets as to whether or not they can keep ahead of the "moles" until the completion of the CWS?

Eppley fights off floodwaters

http://www.omaha.com/article/20110615/N ... loodwaters
Nancy Gaarder WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Eppley Airfield is waging an all-out battle to keep the airport open against the unprecedented flooding along the Missouri River.

With the river exerting pressure against levees and the water table rising, the first sand boil and a handful of sinkholes have appeared at the Omaha airport.

Groundwater has been pooling on airport property and is beginning to encroach on some pieces of important equipment.

Steve Coufal, executive director of the Omaha Airport Authority, said the airport is contracting with seven of the area's leading engineering, technical and construction firms to keep the airport operating.

How long will the CWS last?

I'm sure they will do all that is humanly possible to keep Eppley open until the CWS folks have departed.

For a trip in early July, they've made me a refundable reservation out of MCI as well, just in case.

Well that blue band practically follows the entire length of the Missouri... not the news we need when the river has yet to crest, and water already causing trouble.

They need to drop some kind of 'breakwater' in the river off the north end of the airport or something... I mean that water has to just be slamming into the levee on that end. Seems like they'd want to some how slow it down there, maybe sink some large obstacles ahead of it... something. I just don't see that levee surviving two months.

I thought I remembered reading that Eppley has a 700+ million dollar impact on the Omaha economy. Losing that is a really scary thought.

CNN has a satellite truck parked in Rick's lot along the floodwall and the labor monument workers are about neck deep.

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced? Outside of the 900 or so Hamburg residents, I haven't heard of any mass evacuations yet.

Also, isn't the hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland a "vast area where almost nobody lives"?

Ever heard of a town named Modale? Missouri Valley? Mondamin? Dakota Dunes? South Sioux City? And this is just the beginning.

Also, if you think that "hundreds of thousands of acres of prime farmland" is a vast area where almost nobody lives, you are completely unaware of life outside the city.

I don't know the history of flooding in Council Bluffs... if the levee around Playland Park were to fail... would it pretty well flood all the way to the downtown?

Yes, there are very few high points from the river all the way to downtown CB, or just slightly to the west of the hospitals.

Dang.

When you consider the fact that (they claim) we've not yet seen the highest water levels, and that the flooding will be here for months, this could be really bad news!

There is a lot of snow that still needs to melt in Wyoming (north platte) and Colorado (South Platte) that will raise the Platte up further into the summer.

So far this snow seems to be melting slowly. All the NWS river gauges in the NP and SP in WY and CO are either normal or only at action stage. 1 leaving WY is in flood stage, otherwise, we don't see major flooding on the NP till North Platte and none on the SP.
