It's just a bunch of pictures from a suspect source. I see no proof of a flood.

Yes, there are very few high points from the river all the way to downtown CB, or just slightly to the west of the hospitals.
Dang.

When you consider the fact that (they claim) we've not yet seen the highest water levels, and that the flooding will be here for months, this could be really bad news!
I'm worried about getting through to Omaha via I-80. What are the chances I-80 route from CB will be closed to flooding in the next few weeks? People say that part is unlikely but IDK. I am pregnant and would need to get to hospital. Of course, could go to the local one but even then I worry if it will be accessible to locals. I live on east side of CB at a higher elevation but if everything around us is flooded we would be stuck. UGH, scary!

I would say you've got very little to worry about. If I80 is under water, half of CB, and most of downtown Omaha would have to already be under several feet. This would be a major disaster, and you would be evacuated already. The I-80 approaches from both CB and Omaha are on relatively high ground, so there's no real worry about them going under.

We went down to the riverfront to check things out last night and to try to get a shot of the full moon coming up.

There was a huge crowd down there on the bridge last night! The Mosquito's were extra thick too!

There are a huge beaver swimming around in the flood water near Rick's that drew quite a large crowd. (on a tee for one of you).

The most interesting thing is that there are areas around that back of the Qwest Center near the loading docks with Sand Bags around them a few feet high!

Honestly I am not too worried about the Levee failing as much as I am worried about ground water seepage. What about all the underground transformers in that area. What happens when an underground electrical vault fills with water?

Speaking of seepage...

...ok, seriously though. The train track crossing on riverfront drive might soon be a problem if there aren't pumps brought in.

There were guys in yellow vests looking at it last night. I saw on one of the trains forums it was completely under water down by Heartland of America Park.

Thanks for your reply Ben. This is what I was thinking too, but I just hadn't heard any predictions about how this would affect I-80.

Still hoping for the best for all of us!!

Several large pumps were installed along the RR tracks, just to the east of Heartland park. Crews with smaller, portable pumps were closer to the crossing on Riverfront drive. It was been made passable again, and most of the surface water is gone (or at least below track level, where there are still puddles).

I'm fairly sure this wasn't seepage, but rather runoff. The I-480 bridge decks all runoff to down there, and then generally drain downhill, into the river. That's the one big problem with installing the floodwall closures, and closing off the storm sewer drains. If there is any rain, there's nowhere for it to go. That was just a light rain the other night that caused all of that. It will get pretty bad if we get a quick downpour, or even worse, a sustained dousing...

That makes sense. I didn't think about the 480 bridge draining down there. Thanks Ben.

So, dumb question here. Once the flood waters finally recede, later this summer or fall, are they just going to be able to clear off debris of the roadways, and re-open the sections of I-29 that have closed, or will they need major reconstruction due to the flooding?

I doubt much will happen to the actual concrete/asphalt surfaces, but I was thinking they might have some major erosion problems underneath.

Anyone on here have any experience in this area? An educated guess at how long it'd take them to get things back into usable shape?

I think it depends on what the surface was made out of. KETV had a reporter in Washington county on Tuesday doing a story on the road closures there. They had footage of a section of county road that was submerged <48 hours to a depth of about 6 inches. You could see through the water at the road and it was getting chewed up already.

Why not just let the private sector take care of this? (They certainly have the $$$ to do it, right?)

Yeah, it's already been declared a federal toxic superfund site... so it's not like there's any worse stigma which comes along with it. :)

It'd be more apt to happen if the government egos & entities would just get out of the way and stop holding up progress.

Federal funds at the request of Heineman isn't entirely a bad thing. It would (could?) prevent a Suttle backed tax increase.

Impressive construction work underway at the pump house by the National Parks Service HQ on the river, by the ped bridge. They appear to be laying 12" pipe to connect from their pumps, above ground, out to the river. They're then covering the pipes laid with gravel to hold in place, and allow for crossing.

I'm guessing this is adding capacity (there are also 2 large temporary pumps onsite) as well as solving the problem the city seems to be seeing in several locations - that the exit pipes from sewer/pumphouses are underwater, in the river, not allowing them to be used.

I am heading to Lawrence, KS on Monday - my plan is to take Highway 50 south to Highway 36 in Kansas - then east on 36 to Highway 75 south to Topeka - then I-70 east. Also another route (to Kansas City proper) would be to take I-80 over to C.B., south on I-29 to US Highway 34 at Glenwood. Then take Highway 34 east to Highway 59 South, which will avoid all the flooded stretches of I-29 between Omaha and Rockport, then follow Highway 59 south to Craig, MO where you will meet back up with I-29... then proceed on I-29 as normal.

If this guy's analysis is correct, that's some pretty scary stuff. No wonder the USACE is pouring out as much water as they can.

Just made the trip to Sioux Falls this morning. Took Blair High road to Blair and then Hwy 30 to Missouri Valley and I-29 the rest of the way. Only saw one spot on I29 that was really close to the edge of the road, otherwise clear 'sailing'

My wife drove to KC on Friday. She took 50 to Hwy 2, east on 2 to Nebraska City, South on 75 to Auburn, then east on 136 to Rockport. Finally, south to KC. I think that's a pretty good route, unless your final destination is west of KC.

Nebraska Nuke Plant Notifies Feds of Missouri Flooding
KCRG wrote:The Nebraska Public Power District issued a flooding alert Sunday for its nuclear power plant in southeast Nebraska as the Missouri River continues to rise.

Mark Becker, a spokesman for the Columbus-based utility, said the "notification of unusual event" sent to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was expected as the river swells above record levels. The declaration is the least serious of four emergency notifications established by the federal commission.

From Pakastani news "The Nation"

US orders news blackout over crippled Nebraska Nuclear Plant: report

The Nation wrote:A shocking report prepared by Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency (FAAE) on information provided to them by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) states that the Obama regime has ordered a “total and complete” news blackout relating to any information regarding the near catastrophic meltdown of the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant located in Nebraska.

According to this report, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant suffered a “catastrophic loss of cooling” to one of its idle spent fuel rod pools on 7 June after this plant was deluged with water caused by the historic flooding of the Missouri River which resulted in a fire causing the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) to issue a “no-fly ban” over the area.

Located about 20 minutes outside downtown Omaha, the largest city in Nebraska, the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant is owned by Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) who on their website denies their plant is at a “Level 4” emergency by stating: “This terminology is not accurate, and is not how emergencies at nuclear power plants are classified.”

Russian atomic scientists in this FAAE report, however, say that this OPPD statement is an “outright falsehood” as all nuclear plants in the world operate under the guidelines of the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) which clearly states the “events” occurring at the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant do, indeed, put it in the “Level 4” emergency category of an “accident with local consequences” thus making this one of the worst nuclear accidents in US history.

Though this report confirms independent readings in the United States of “negligible release of nuclear gasses” related to this accident it warns that by the Obama regimes censoring of this event for “political purposes” it risks a “serious blowback” from the American public should they gain knowledge of this being hidden from them.

Unless the Russians know more than the people still working at the plant today, I would have to say this is a clever anti-American propaganda piece. Looked pretty secure when I was by there about 90 minutes ago.

Considering American-Pakistani relations are at an all time low (Pakistan just again tipped off terrorist at a bomb making factory about a raid) I'd say that it is just that - propaganda to make US look bad. Only reason I posted it.
