Oops. Guess I don't know my clouds very well.

I didn't know either until recently. I have a friend teaching me about weather. Now when I see a self cloud I grab the camera and head outside. With a wall cloud, I would be a lot more careful about what I am doing.

So I am in Brazil again for work; On their news channel today they brought up the Lady Gaga radio interview and her visits to Nebraska. They said most people outside the states don't know Nebraska, but it is one of the best places to live in the US by many sources.

They show Omaha on that show all the time. I can hear the other half watching it in the other room right now.

There are some messed up people on that show. Its a train wreck!

About ten years ago, my wife and I are in Bergen, Norway. After a day of shopping in the Sentrum, we meandered our way back to the flat we were staying at. Taking a side street for some variety, we chanced upon a used record store. Cooooooool A building that was likely five centuries old in this old seaport, we walked in and saw a large red headed Viking type of a guy standing behind a counter, seemingly more interested in something he was reading.
"hei" I said. "Hei", he greeted me back. We headed for the nearest rack and proceeded to sift through the European LP's.
Then, "Thor" lifted his head and said something to us. I didn't recognize the words he said, but likely he asked if he could help us.

Busted! So I replied "Jeg er amerikansk."
"Oh" he said.

A moment later, he asked in broken English "where in America?"
"Nebraska" I replied.
He looked at me with a furrowed brow. A big Viking-like furrowed brow it was.
Finally he spoke. "Yes, in the middle".

"ja". Whoa! How cool was that?!

One other event was when we took a daylong fjord tour on an icebreaker boat. At one point we got to meet the ships captain. Before we said a word, he looked at my ball cap, which was black with a modest "Nebraska" written in red script. His eyes brightened and he spoke in English to me in a big voice (that sounded just like the "Peggy" guy in those credit card commercials) "Nebrrrrrrrrrrrrraska! Welcome to the Bruvik!"

So, fast forward to a couple of summers ago. We're in Oslo, two blocks from where the bomb blast went off last week. Our hotel has an underground parking garage across the street. We drive down a steep ramp the two levels below the street into this ancient building, first passing two waiters enjoying their cigarettes while on break from their cafe on the first level below the street. As we stop at the bottom of the ramp, a twenty something guy in a uniform walks up to us. he's the attendant and he'll park the borrowed Volvo we're driving. Again, I'm wearing a cap, this time a white cap with "Huskers" on the front. How tacky, I know. So what does the guy say? He says "so you guys going to be getting good again?" Turns out he spent two years in the states, going to Florida State before coming back home to run the family business.

Small world. Very small...

Norsk is haaaaard, cuz we usually spend more time in Sverige (Sweden) when we go that direction. More family there, so our trips to Norge tend to be for only a few days. We bone up more on our Swedish and just a little Norwegian each time. It's only to be polite, though, because you can't go anywhere in either country and not be able to have a conversation in English.
Norsk and Svenska look a lot alike, but the pronunciation is so much different. That's why English is compulsory in each of the Scandinavian countries from 4th grade on... it's the universal business language in each of the Scandinavian countries.

You'd actually be surprised though, I can understand both Svensk og Dansk, spoken and written, and Danish people and Swedish people can typically understand me whenever I speak to them in Norwegian. But, they can't understand each other. Its actually a really nice advantage you could say.

The Gaga video is interesting. My son was one of the extras hired for the scenes at the bar in Papillion. After hearing his experience, I was wondering if these guys were hired as a diversion. No scenes from that bar made the cut and the night scenes are all shot in the cornfields.

Cornfields are not bad images of the state. They are inappropriate when some network news show is covering the BH convention, or some other element of downtown Omaha, or even the panhandle (where, fyi, for those of you who think Waterloo is too far west, there isn't much corn grown). Thematically, it works.

Every time I hear of an eating challenge, someone brings up The Stellanator at Stella's in Bellevue.
Consists of (6) 6.5 oz burger patties, 6 fried eggs, 12 pieces of bacon, 6 pieces of cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, jalepenos, & Peanut Butter all on a bun served with a basket of fries.
