Hipsters are a confusing bunch. Most of the time I'm not sure if I want to punch them in the face or give them a hug.

It is important to judge all hipsters on whether or not they've listened to any Nico, Lou Reed, or John Cale beyond the first Velvet Underground album. This will literally weed out all of the terrible ones from ones that aren't that awful.

Lester Bangs had a test for people who claimed to be VU fans and truly hip beings. When he went over to their apartment he would look at their copy of White Light/White Heat and see if the grooves were worn down on Sister Ray. The Hotel Deco has a one page article in this month's issue of Southwest Airline's Spirit Magazine. It is this month's Great Hotel for Business Travelers or something along those lines.

Shoot! I just flew Southwest and kinda spaced off their magazine this time! I've got another Southwest flight in a few weeks, but that's next month and I'm sure the mag will have changed.

Did anyone else notice that, in the state farm commercial with the big robot, right after they say "there goes dwaynes house" and the robot is about to destroy the house, that the up building is in the background on the left side? its directly above the black suv in the driveway. Then after the robot destroys the house, you can see the world herald building on the left side as well (right before they say "and there goes dwayne")

Not Omaha, but Nebraska. I was checking out at the grocery store here in Albany and had a smile put on my face when I saw some sort of LIFE Magazine publication with a gorgeous photo of Chimney Rock shrouded in mist right on the cover.

The issue was called something to the effect of "America Re-Discovered," or something similar.

Nice! It's kind of sad that old chimney rock is eroding. I remember going there as a kid, it was the first time i realized there's a whole lot more to nebraska than what is stereotyped.

Not sure if this fits exactly, but Eli Manning sometimes yells "Omaha" in the snap count. I heard it last night during the Super Bowl.

According to the OWH:

Manning has a snap count called Omaha that he uses from time to time as he leads the Giants offense. When he calls Omaha, it's a signal to the rest of his offense, although the exact meaning might vary.

Why Omaha?

A World-Herald reporter who was in Indianapolis last week asked Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, but he couldn't place it. "I wish we had a good reason so I could get a kickback or something for it," Gilbride said.

I found this a little amusing:

Doug Parrott, Omaha general manager for the Bailey Lauerman marketing firm, sees a benefit for the city, even in a seemingly random mention.

"I'd much rather he say Omaha than Des Moines."

I guess it gives the Omaha name a pretty big exposure (~111 million viewers).

Kind of a joke thinking that Manning's "Omaha" audibles would really equate to any tangible benefit to Omaha. I was consciously listening for his Omaha audibles but never heard any. Maybe on a subconscious level it would be of some benefit, if the play went well! At least the NFL didn't try to charge us for the exposure. The true value of Superbowl ads is way overblown IMO.

Columbus' AD and coach have really been taking a beating for this in the comments.

I think everybody agrees that they technically broke the rules, but for them to wait for the second half to call them out for the foul was poor sportsmanship on Columbus' part and horrible refereeing on the ref's part. Like Uffda, it should have been called at the beginning of the game or else not at all.

And like byrdrules said, they should have purposely missed the shots. One team I read about missed both shots and purposely passed the ball to the opposing team afterwards.

Regardless of what you may think of the rules, it has really made Columbus look bad to the rest of the country. It's just a meaningless high school basketball game. Are the "rules" that important compared to something like the Make-A-Wish foundation? And I say "rules" because this rule is such a minor rule in the first place. It is only meant to make sure that they can tell each team apart. As far as I know, they didn't have any problem the first half, so why all of the sudden on the second? Because they were down by 1?

Plus, the rule specifically states that the jerseys are supposed to be predominantly white. As far as I'm concerned, pink is just white that has been washed with some red outfits.

There comes a time when knowing too much about a subject for which you do not get paid that it becomes a nuisance.

That said, I would like to know your opinion on why the huskers suck so bad.

Hahaha...well to be fair one of my dreams was to be an NFL coach (may still pursue that) and the "Omaha" signal is basically universal across every NFL offense. As for the Huskers, I couldn't really tell you. I don't really care for college football anymore. That said, I have a couple ideas just off hand.

- Horrible offensive coaching staff. I can't think of a single coach on that side of the ball who is all that well thought of in coaching circles.

- Bo Pelini. I think he's a very good defensive coach, but leaves alot to be desired as a head coach. Some of his coaching staff hires on both sides of the ball have been real head scratchers, and I think he ultimately views the offense as nothing more than a tool to give his defenses a rest, contributing to the absurdly conservative offenses. I see this problem with a lot of defensive minded head coaches at all levels of the game.

- An offensive scheme that is about 10 years too old. I think if they adopted a real pro style offense, they would find that recruiting on that side of the ball to be much easier with more talent available to them. With our current scheme, alot of high level talent (especially at QB and WR) will not even look at you.

Yeah, I can't really disagree with any of that. I'm pretty comfortable with the thought that an up year for Nebraska is a 10-win season, possibly playing in Big10 championship, and an average season looking a lot like the last. I should also point out that I think Taylor Martinez, while being a bit more fundamentally sound QB now, hit his peak in 2010 versus K-State.

Anyway, have you thought about getting a coaching certificate? I have and wouldn't mind coaching high school baseball some day, but I fear that I will be blessed with a bunch of non-listening smart-as$es like I was.
