Looks to be about 11 to 12 floors. I like the modern glass buildings going up in that area (Durham Research Towers). Should be a wonderful use of the land.

I'm confused... is it the 8-story structure extending out from the left of what appears to be the original Durham tower? or is it that plus another structure that looks like another Durham tower?

And what are the generic gray structures in the background? proposed buildings to sit along 'Saddle Creek' ?

So the structures in the background ARE the existing Durham towers... and this entire rendering is the new building?

Wow, that will be quite an addition.

I believe so, the building will be pretty massive based on the rendering. So, I don't quite understand the sq. footage given in the OWH article, as it appears much larger than one Durham Research tower. Unless this is a phased build.

Looks like a very sleek design to me. Is the exterior going to be brick-cladded?

Yes it is a phased build the taller research building on the right in the rendering is going to be built first. This is the square footage in the OWH. The second long connected building is the a cancer treatment center to be built later.

the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute

This is the building that is replacing another cool brick building (with deco detailing) that UNMC tore down. Alley Poyner is doing this project and does historic preservation projects...they know better! I have pictures of the old building but don't know how to post them.

I would venture to say that UNMC had specific ideas about what they wanted for the eye institute, and it had nothing to do with the building they bought and tore down. APMA bid on the project based on the specs they were given, which was to design a new building on a cleared lot space. Not all of Alley Poyner's work is historic preservation. I doubt any architecture firm in Omaha could survive by only doing historic pres. work.

The site layout on this page makes it look pretty lame with the giant parking lot in front of it:

This (I assume) newer rendering seems to be quite a bit different:

There is a rough rendering on OWH. It would be a pretty sizable addition.

According to the new renderings, the north building would have 10 stories, the middle section 6 floors and the south building 9 floors.

After reading the article this seems like it needs to happen and most likely will.

UNMC is one of Omaha and Nebraska's best assets it would be wise to continue investment here.
The state is taking care of a relatively small portion of the entire project considering the total cost.

You've got to be |expletive| kidding: The new rendering shows the cancer research center being constructed right where some of the older, more historic buildings of the Med Center are.
http://binged.it/xncpdk

Why on EARTH would they do this when they supposedly just completed a land swap with OPPD for all their land to the southwest of the Med Center????? Jesus Christ, we're such a tear down, throw away society.

Exactly. That's what my link shows, but thanks for posting. That's a clear shot of the apparently worthless, throw-away historic structure that sits on the site now. It also clearly shows the glut of land at the OPPD site in the background.

God, how retarded.

I think OPPD is completely gone now (except for the substation which is not leaving). The other night everything looked vacant.

I agree with some of what you're saying, but you have to ask the question: What's better for the community?....for UNMC to continue to gobble-up their neighbor's adjacent land?....or for them to tear down and replace their own buildings that are too small or out-dated to meet their current and future needs? For all we know, the existing buildings could be full of asbestos and not meet any of the current standards for accessibility and life safety. You have to balance all of these factors when making such decisions. For better or worse, tear-downs happen all the time in places like Las Vegas, Chicago, and NYC due to demand for property. You should be happy they're proposing to increase the density of UNMC development, rather than spread out further. From looking at the photo above, I doubt the older buildings really have much historical significance. The new buildings will most likely be LEED Gold or Platinum certified, taking into account using recycled materials, high energy efficiency, etc. to name a few attributes. Materials from the old buildings will most likely be recycled too.

These new proposed buildings have the added benefit of helping UNMC make advancements in the battle against cancer.

Since you brought up the LEED issue, it has been shown that it is always more efficient and environmentally friendly to utilize existing buildings than to tear down and build new ones.

Anyway, you also have to ask yourself how UNMC's numerous surface parking lots and acquired vacant land are serving the community.

Not very historically significant? We've thrown away so much of our history in America that virtually anything older than 1950 could be considered historically significant merely by virtue of how rare it is.

Axel, I don't need you to tell me that.

And furthermore, I think honest criticism is exactly what America needs right now, and it can be out of love and concern, too. The days or triumphalism are over. Now it's time for the reality check as we take count of what we've done to this place.

And I know there are some Americans (every country must have them) who will always be blind to these inadequacies.

just FYI, the Med Center bought the OPPD property outright, but OPPD leased it back temporarily to store some vehicles during the flooding last year. now that that is complete, UNMC will be re-purposing that land shortly.

Reason For Location

Post by SMEC »

There is a very good reason the new cancer center can't be on the OPPD property. Since the new project is a joint effort between UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, the new center must be accessible for patients. Earlier plans were only for cancer research. The NEW cancer center will include both research AND a 108 bed facility for treatment of cancer patients. Locating the center on the OPPD property would place it much too far away from the rest of the hospital and patient care would be severely compromised. Placing it in the area of Swanson Hall and the parking garage puts it right next to the Durham Outpatient Center, The Hixon-Lied Center and Clarkson Tower. Other hospital patient care areas will be directly adjacent to the new facility.

That's all well and good, but it's obvious the existing buildings cannot accommodate UNMC's need for 525,000 square feet of space to house the proposed cancer center, in close proximity to the rest of the campus.

From speaking to people who work there, University Tower should be condemned. It seems, that to best serve their patients, the Swanson Hall space, if it needs to be torn down (which I don't think that it should be) should be used to construct a replacement for University Tower. Not sure if it is entirely feasible, but University Tower needs to be replaced. The new cancer center could be constructed where University Tower is now.

Well then, that's just plain poor planning, then, isn't it?

In any case, thanks for shining light on the reasoning behind the decision.

Agreed. And it's likely the new structure will be knocked down within 50 years to build something else.

Historic should have some quantifiable standards. A building should have some singular role in history, or some solitary architectural feature in order to qualify as "Historical". Just because its old, doesn't make it historical.
