Wonder if they just tripped a breaker?
They were not working Tues, but I am fairly sure they were back on Wednesday or Thursday.

They were both on tonight on my way to work.
It occurred to me on Tuesday night when driving to the CU game that getting the CLC, FNB tower and bridge lights blue on game days would be a nice touch.

Funny I was thinking the exact same thing at the CU game the other night. I actually have thought of that idea for a while. I know the pedestrian bridge would be easy to do and it has been blue before. I am pretty sure that the First National tower could be done (it is green for Christmas and has been red the first few years for Christmas).almighty_tuna wrote:They were both on tonight on my way to work.

I like the idea, but don't see it happening because every Husker Saturday it should be red no? And then where does it stop? Particularly with FNB. It is interesting that they've added the green annually for the CWS, of course, with the logo beamed up only the north side, it's only a fortuitous advantage taken from Espn's obligatory skyline shots. One could argue however, that the more that they alter the lighting the more conversational they become a la The Empire State Building or Willis Tower.
In Chicago, they typically include:
Green -St.Patrick's Day
Pink - Mother's Day
Red and Blue -4th of July
Orange - Halloween
Red & Green -Holidays
as well as...
September 2-4
Muscular Dystrophy Association/MDA Telethon Weekend
Blue
September 13
Chicago Police Department Candlelight Vigil for Fallen Officers
Blue
September 15-17
Lymphoma Research Foundation/World Lymphoma Day
Red
September 19-26
National Ovarian Cancer Coalition
Teal
September 30-October 30
Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation/Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Pink
November 1-November 10
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Purple

Also on the color schemes...I've always thought the bridge's lights look tacky constantly morphing. I suppose if they didn't they it would have to be a coordinated effort with Iowa's/CB interests?

Why should it be red for every Husker Saturday? I'm talking about a local team to Omaha with lighting in the immediate vicinity of the venue where the Jays play. I not advocating it be something done for *every* game either, much like how the "white out" events are only once or twice a season.nebport5 wrote:I like the idea, but don't see it happening because every Husker Saturday it should be red no? Where does it stop? Simple. At changing them blue for a few hours. We're not talking about vast social representation here.

Perhaps red for UNO... given that UNO is red and UNL is scarlet.

I understand what you're saying and don't really disagree. I think it would be great in fact, but I just don't think it's very likely. Put your husker hatred aside for a minute and think realistically. In fact, I'm not even trying to advocate for NU's equal representation but pointing out there's many who would. And it may not be about "vast social representation" in your eyes, but there would be a PR aspect of it that wouldn't be lost on First National. Furthermore, If its something you are doing for the ad-"jay"-cent fans ultimately, do think FNB wouldn't want to capitalize on a similar practice because UNL is in Lincoln? I'm sure you're aware how prominently they promote their "huskers" and "bluejays" themed debit/credit cards as well as doll out free schedules at the beginning of the season.almighty_tuna wrote:Why should it be red for every Husker Saturday? I think it would be cool if they turned it blue for a few days if Creighton wins a conference championship.

Who said anything about husker hatred? Good grief. It's a simple idea about coordinating prominent, decorative lighting to support a local team for a special night or something. Nothing which should be extrapolated out to some unicameral-esque overcomplication about equal representation of FNB's sponsorships. Who cares what FNB wants to do with their lights! I'm sure there's some obscure cause with their own shade of obscure color which could keep their Pantone gels in constant rotation if they so choose. I'm just saying it would be cool to see lights coordinated blue for a Jays game.nebport5 wrote:I understand what you're saying and don't really disagree. People seem to forget the bridge is part Iowa's too, even though Omaha is mostly responsible for maintaining it. The color-changing pylon lighting doesn't really excites me all that much, compared to the design concept and setting of the bridge itself. The color-changing lighting should be reserved for events shared on both sides of the river, such as the new NU-Iowa Big 10 rivalry, or holidays, etc.

That's sad... May be because they turn the lights off at night. It would be much harder to pull that off when the bridge is all lit up.iamjacobm wrote:It looks like they gave up on the informational signs that were constantly vandalized.
Also, how hard would it be to throw up a couple video cameras on the bridge. Not sure who would monitor them...

The new lights up top are fantastic. iamjacobm, do you think there is any possibility the informational signs are only gone for repairs, or is there something that leads you to believe they are gone for good. I really hope they can come up with a better way to display the signs where they can not be vandalized. They were a great feature on the bridge.

Mention of a nearly $4 million "North Downtown Pedestrian Riverfront Connector Bridge" that will span Riverfront Drive and the railroad line in the agenda.

I was surprised to see it too. For informations sake it said $500K from federal funds, $100K from local and about $3.2 from "other" sources which I assume means donations if someone wants their last name attached to it or something.omahahawk wrote:Thanks for letting us know about this. Today there were new supports in for the signs, no signs yet, but that is a good sign.windsor wrote:The new lights up top are fantastic. iamjacobm, do you think there is any possibility the informational signs are only gone for repairs, or is there something that leads you to believe they are gone for good. Omaha City Council approves downtown bridge study
http://www.omaha.com/article/20130305/N ... idge-study
So apparently this project had been kind of silently bouncing around for a while and now all of a sudden its getting some talk. The article says 2016 is the earliest construction might start. Does anybody have any more insight on this they would be willing to share? Or do you think will have to wait a couple of years before we hear anything about this again?
The Omaha City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to use $500,000 in federal grant money to begin studies on a new bridge that would link the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge with north downtown.

Study: Drop someone who has never been to Omaha off at TD Ameritrade Park. Point to the pedestrian bridge and tell them to go there. Have them report their experience. Rinse and repeat. Build bridge.

That's funny ShawJ. I agree totally. I have a hard time believing that it take three years and half a million dollars to implement this project. I also think almost four million dollars seems like an awfully high price tag for the bridge but until we see some renderings we'll just have to wait to judge. The time line is probably the most disturbing part of this.
