I think your immature and continuous name calling of Husker fans is getting tiresome. I don’t care if you don’t like Husker fans. If it means so much to you that you want to keep posting about it on forums then more power to you. But is it so necessary to paint everyone with such a broad brush and continuously call names. Are you capable of explaining your position without doing that? I think it says as much about you as Husker fans. As a Husker fan myself, you don’t even know me. I don’t know how you could judge me and continuously bash me.DTO Luv wrote: And Husker fans are dick holes.

OK, those of you who say Husker fans are so classless have OBVIOUSLY never talked to fans from other teams, been on road games, or listened to opposing teams' coaches talk about this. It is everywhere- fans from opposing teams, coaches from opposing teams, even players from opposing teams all talk it up about how classy the Nebraska fans are! This is not an opinion of mine, or something that Husker fans have made up, it is simply what the others are saying!!!! Sure there are exceptions to that rule, just as in everything else- but the large majority are very classy!
And it's sad that some people take their hatred of the Huskers and try to twist it to sound as if having them in the CWS is a terrible thing. Fact is that when Joe Blow on the west coast tunes in and sees the stadium filled with red on Friday evening, he's not going to be disgusted- he'll understand since Nebraska is basically the home team, and may just be impressed at how rabid their (our) fans are.

I absolutely agree, it happens everywhere. The difference is that those fans don't all have sore shoulders from constantly slapping themselves on the back about their "classiness". A perfect example is Ruff4NU on the Dumbpedia.com board. That guy always rails on how this team's fans have no class or that team's fans have no class when he shows absolutely no respect in his posts for any other team or their fans so I pretty much guarantee that he's the biggest a-hole of anyone in the stands. The funny thing is he'll always post about how the Creighton fans are just loud, drunk idiots before the game is even played and sure enough afterwards he has to tell a story about how he had some drunk, Creighton fan behind him. The funny thing is that it's a sea of red in the area he supposedly sits in but yet he has a Creighton fan right by him. I think he must type up his "game experiences" beforehand so he can make a post about the other team's "classless" fans as quickly as possible after the game.Have you even been to an away game at KSU, KU or CU? This is not exclusive to Nebraska fans.

Every fanbase has it's good fans and bad fans. I've seen my fellow Creighton fans act in a positive manner before and i've seen things that was embarassing to our fans as a whole. The NU fanbase is no different.
I've been to most major meetings between the two schools recently. I've had my share of positive experiences (esp. the NU fans that stayed around for the Creighton-NC State baseball games). I fully expected to take a lot of |expletive| at the basketball game in Lincoln last December, but had generally good experiences, esp. with the people sitting in my section. The CU-NU baseball games on Creighton's campus the last few years were generally good natured affairs as well.
That said, two events stick out in my mind like sore thumbs as some of the more classless behavior i've seen from fans, and that's the CU-NU games at the Regional (esp. Saturday night) and the NIT game two years ago. The NIT game was the worst. I've never been as out right verbally accosted as I was by Husker fans at that game. They should have been ashamed of themselves.
On Idiotpedia, I have zero respect for those people. They are the picture of the arrogance that some Husker fans wallow in and is what engenders a lot of the displeasure that their fanbase has in some corners. People like that want a lack of dissenting opinion and to be buttered up in the simultaneous delusions of grandeur and proclamations of martrydom.
I'm sure there will be a variety of experiences at the games this weekend. There are some really high quality Husker fans and I have no problem at all seeing them come to Omaha and root on their team. Hopefully the more problem people will get too blitzed in the parking lot to even make it in the gate.
I'll be going to as many games as possible this week (won't try for Friday night, but am going to try for the NU Sunday game). Even though we're not there, i'll sport my Creighton blue and we'll see what happens.

Being an Omaha native, UNL alumn, and a combined CU/NU fan..And attendee of many a CU/NU Basketball/Football game over the years
I'd say for the most part Shatner's rug and CUStudent are speaking the truth about NU fans and fans in general..
Many people living in Omaha, but not NU fans, to a person have always pointed out to me what they can't stand the most about NU fans is their 'holier than thou'..'classier than thou' attitudes..Certainly we cannot broad brush ALL NU fans in this way (and I am certainly not that kind of NU fan)..But this is almost ALWAYS referenced as #1 on the list of what fans of other teams dislike THE most about 'Husker Fan'..
Albeit the humility of losing during the past 3 years of NU football has tempered this sentiment a bit..

That's a two way street. It's no coincidence the peak of the NU hatred coincided with one of the most successful and dominant runs in the history of sports.
I think what most people around here hate about Husker fans is what they hate about sports fans in general. They just see it manifested by NU fans because that's the environment in which they live.
I can't remember when or where I saw the editorial, but an out-of-town writer was doing a preview of an NU football matchup. The line read something like: "I always love visiting Lincoln. Nebraska fans are the classiest, most knowledgeable fans in football. If you don't beleive me, just ask them. They'll tell you." I might have been offended had it not been true.
I couldn't count the number of times I've been sitting in Memorial Stadium and heard Nebraska fans tell OTHER Nebraska fans this. Then again, I've heard Vikings fans in the Metrodome brag to other Vikings fans about how great their home field advanatge is. Camden Yards is full of people who are so proud they've been Orioles fans even through the down years.
The fact is hard-core sports fans are a tough lot to tolerate. The other fact is we don't really notice it until they are fans from other teams. In other words, MY dumbass fanboys are the exception, but YOUR dumbass fanboys are the rule.

NO!! FANS OF OPPOSING TEAMS ARE NOT SAYING IT!! As I said, 9 times out of 10 it is a Husker fan saying it either amongst themselves or to other team's fans. You do sometimes hear it from other players or coaches but they have very little interaction with the fans. Should we do a poll with Iowa fans, Creighton fans, K-State fans, Missouri fans, Colorado fans, or any other group of fans of teams that Husker fans seem to think they have a birthright to continually beat but haven't been beating as regularly as of late? I'm not saying Husker fans are any worse and there are some great Husker fans but they certainly aren't any better. The annoying thing is as someone stated, the "holier than thou" attitude coupled with the fact that when NU loses to a K-State or someone the whole next week the radio is flooded with calls from people who were there reporting on all the "classless" behavior they witnessed. They can't just tip their cap to the better team, they instead have to vent about the the other teams fans, team, etc. That is NOT classy. It is everywhere- fans from opposing teams, coaches from opposing teams, even players from opposing teams all talk it up about how classy the Nebraska fans are! This is not an opinion of mine, or something that Husker fans have made up, it is simply what the others are saying!!!!

Yes, opposing team's fans ARE saying it! I know this because I have heard it first-hand from fans from many of those other Big12 schools who have come here to Lincoln for games, and I have seen it written in those other school' press! Not once or twice, but consistently.
I'm not saying that Husker fans should be overly proud of this, and I think it is ridiculous for any Husker fans to be cocky about this and try telling other fans how great they (we) are, I am simply saying that this IS what I am hearing and seeing from many of those fans on the other side, and that this idea was not some propaganda created by Husker fans themselves.

This is not a true statement. I usually go out of my way to talk to fans from other teams and make them feel comfortable here. They have always (every time) said that Nebraska fans are great. I won’t use the word best because there really is no best, it’s too subjective. The rowdiest crowd I have ever seen was at KSU. There were two mimes sitting a couple of rows in front of me who kept standing up and shushing me. When they did something good they would stand up with their hand by their ear as to say “why are you so quite now”. They never said a word the whole game. That was hilarious.Shatner's Rug wrote: NO!! When Washington played here in 1990, I even walked an elderly UW couple to their vehicle when it was way out of my way. She just latched onto my arm and asked if I could take her to her car. I think Nebraska has some of the tamest crowds in college football. I have always wanted it to be louder and rowdier. Most Nebraska games I go to are filled with a lot of older people that don’t like to stand or yell. The obnoxious fans in Lincoln you like to describe are the exception not the rule Every team has these fans.

You are a Husker fan and yet you keep saying it. I don't want to hear from Husker fans about how "classy" they are, get it? Husker fans "get off" on the whole "classiest fan" thing, it's like it's passed down from generation to generation to make sure you repeat this mantra as often as possible, therefore you as a Husker fan of course are going to mention how you've "heard" from people visiting Lincoln about how "classy" the NU fans are. I can see how that conversation went:
You: "Hi, good luck today, you're going to need it. You'll find we're the classiest fans in the country."
Fan: "Thank you. Yes, we've had a great time so far. Good luck to you too."
You (to Husker buddy): "Dude, that guy just mentioned how classy our fans are."
Your Husker buddy: "Cool, let's make a note to repeat that to 5 people this week and have them tell 5 people about how we're the classiest fans in the country and so on. Make sure to tell them that their luck will turn against them if they break the chain."
Sorry, I'm not a Husker fan and I do hang with many other non-Husker fans and none of us think Husker fans are the classiest in the country. I'm not a Husker hater either. I greatly admire how this baseball program was built and have defended the football program many a time about the bad rap they got in the mid-90s.

NU Fans
For some of you who have a difficult time getting out of Omaha, I can tell you that fans from other teams DO say that NU have the best fans. I have lived in Washington state, New York, Philadelphia and now in Florida. I have heard and read positive remarks from a number of places but specifically Penn State fans (yes after they had played NU in PA and in NE), Tennessee, Florida and Florida State. Yes there is a bad apple every now and then but the general consensus is that NU fans are great. Penn State fans are still upset about 1994 but also agree that they got the benefit of a poor call in 1984. The one thing they don't dispute is that our fans are great hosts and the most gracious fans they have seen. If you want to see bad fan behavior, go to see the Philadelphia Eagles or to Happy Valley. Memorial Stadium is a welcoming site compared to these.

You didn't hear me say Husker fans are the classiest fans in the country. I think I said there is no classiest because it's too subjective. There are good and bad in all. I went to a Colorado game with a Penn State grad from New Jersey and she thought Nebraska fans were boring compared to Penn State fans. I wasn't real enthusiastic with that assessment either.

Ok, to get back on topic...
It doesn't look like Nebraska being in the CWS is hurting the hotel industry in Omaha. I just heard on the radio that the visitors bureau is reporting that Omaha's 10,000 hotel rooms are all booked for the next week.

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I DON'T WANT TO HAPPEN!!!!! I doens't matter if they're watching from Boston, NYC or even KC or Des Moines. I don't want my city to be assocaited with a team that has the word "Nebraska" or "Cornhusker" in the name. It's a stupid name implying a love for rurallness (which Omaha isn't) and it also makes us look like a backward place with a big white-mass of people, that wear a Husker shirt into a restaurant and think it's "Nice". I got upset at my family for wanting to weat Husker clothes to my counsins graduatuion. I made them change before we left.
And for all of the other hard core urban people like myself, the Huskers do make US (the knowledgable urban people) look like a Husker fan from Ord. I've had people ask me if I've had a horse because I said I was from here and I asked why they would think that and she said because aren't you guys Cornhuskers or some kind of farmers. What the heck? Yes Omaha is in Nebraska but it's the exact opposite of what Omaha is and wants to be. If any of our local teams had the support the Huskers had we'd see more of Omaha on tv (Qwest and CU, Mavs. UNO one of these days.) and people wouldn't think to ask us if we rode horses.
I hate that team (Football, baseball any sports) with an extreme passion. As much as I care for the CWS I care for Omaha more and I hate to see our city be dragged down with the rural, backwards thinking image of this state or it's teams.

D - Most of us on this forum love the urban experience and what Omaha is becoming. Most of us also are proud of our state and its heritage. There's something about Nebraskan's I believe, that is very rooted to the land of the state, that makes them tend to be honest, hardy, realists, hard-working, humble, and many other excellent characteristics. (some people won't agree with me). I think it's great when people ask when they hear if I'm from Nebraska if Nebraska has running water etc. It's fun to dispell the myths and to surprise them when they actually see Omaha and Nebraska and find out that there really is an urban city (or two) and the state isn't all flat and has a lot of beauty to it. (one of my nephews who attends Notre Dame has 2 friends from New York staying with his family this week - I'm sure it will be an eye-opening experience). Yes, the cornhuskers conjure up an image of farmers, etc.. but so what?? If you polled American's (contrary to what some posters have said recently) and asked them what they first thought of when they think of Nebraska, many would say the cornhuskers. When asked what they think of the cornhuskers, most would have positive things to say. NU has given much more (mostly positive) visibility to the state than you'd expect for a rural state with the population of Nebraska. Not long ago I read where Nebraska apparel is in the top 10 of school logo sales - not bad for a relatively small school. I have no problem appreciating our western/rural/cattle producing/agricultural heritage while also celebrating the major leaps forward that are occurring.DTO Luv wrote: And for all of the other hard core urban people like myself, the Huskers do make US (the knowledgable urban people) look like a Husker fan from Ord. I totally believe you about the clothes thing. One Husker shirt isn't enough. You have to have a sweat shirt, t-shirt, shorts, jacket, socks ( I have a terrible story about that but I'll save it.) the shirt from the Orange Bowl we won, the shirt that says UN-Finished business, the one with the Gov... I mean Coach on it, the one with Tom and Bob, the one that says Back-to-Back-to-Back, the one Eric Crouch signed, the one Johnny Rogers stole from your house using his "Superman" eyes. That is alot of Husker |expletive|. And just one person.
Well I'm glad to see the CEO of Mutual thought this was important enough to turn casual Friday into Husker Red Friday. I think I'll jsut go naked. Tom Osborne Style.

No, I did not go polling people. These are unsolicited comments and comments that have appeared in out of state media reports following games with Nebraska. If you would have gotten out of Omaha once in a while you would know the good reputation of the fans. Oh yeah, you have been out of Omaha. Now try leaving the state of Nebraska (and Iowa). Life has a much different look. It is obvious that nothing is going to change your mind. You seem very content in your mistaken view. It is too bad you are not willing to listen to reason. Yes, there are some NU fans that are not classy. I know some of them and do not approve. However, as a whole, they are very good fans. (Oh sorry, I must be repeating my mantra again.)
Omaha has done some very good things to improve the city. You should be proud of what has been done. Yes, it is the most urban aspect of Nebraska and it is completely different from most of the state. However, it is still in Nebraska and no matter what happens it will be associated with the rest of the state - including the Univesity of Nebraska. I'm sorry if the rural aspect of the state taints Omaha's urban reputation. None of us here can change that.
One thing I do not understand is the disgust for the University by people in Omaha. If Creighton were to get into the CWS, most husker fans would cheer for them. When Creighton gets into the NCAA basketball tourney (and NU doesn't), most husker fans cheer for them. Yes, NU has had much more success on the national scale due to the football team. Yes, that does breed some arrogance and also some jealousy. Not being a native of the state, I would think Omaha would gladly accept the national exposure both NU and the CWS brings. Enjoy it. Relish it. Build upon it. I believe NU fans, like all of Nebraska, want to see Omaha continue to develop and gain a national reputation. One of the worst things Omaha residents can do is to continue bashing of NU. Omaha needs the whole state of Nebraska and western Iowa to thrive.

On to Omaha: It's a sweet sweep for the Huskers
Wow. You really don't know the Omaha/Nebraska realationship that well. They don't care for us (despite what some people here will tell you) and I now I could care less about them. And I don't buy that just because Omaha is in Nebraska that we should have to deal with the rural connotations. Chicago carries all of Illinois. Everyone knows there's a differance btwn the two. Just like they say in Florida, the further south you go the further north you go, and vice versa. Omaha does need to break away and be "the Chicago" of Nebraska. We shouldn't have an affiliation ( or at least such a strong one) with a Lincoln school. And I know I'll do my damndest to change the way outsiders see the differance btwn Omaha and Nebraska.

'That's a two way street. It's no coincidence the peak of the NU hatred coincided with one of the most successful and dominant runs in the history of sports.'..
Certainly fan emotion is spiced-up when any team consistently wins..
Regardless, I still hear the same complaint from non-NU fans regarding 'Husker Fan' feeling they're somehow 'better than' or 'classier than' other fans..
..Same thing I heard in 1995 and 2005..

It doesn't look like Nebraska being in the CWS is hurting the hotel industry in Omaha. I just heard on the radio that the visitors bureau is reporting that Omaha's 10,000 hotel rooms are all booked for the next week.
Wow, what a negitive Nancy... If all the hotel rooms are gone, why does it matter if their are Nebraska fans in them or not? The fact is that the CWS filled all those hotel rooms.

Thank you. Although more than likely, they ARE predominantly occupied by Husker fans coming in from all over Nebraska AND the nation.

I find that hard to believe as I was just able to book a room for next week through the web. Room's are tight, but they aren't all sold out. Just a little over-hype form the visitor's bureau (that, or a bunch of folks cancelled after their team fell flat in the regionals or super regionals).omahapropertymanager wrote:Ok, to get back on topic...

Huskers are good for Omaha and CWS

I disagree that I do not know the relationship. Look around and ask people outside your circle of friends. The individuals I know are very well connected and hear a diversity of views. With only a few exceptions most people do not agree with you. There is a good rapport between Omaha and the residents of the rest of the state.
Omaha is a regional small city that will not thrive without the surrounding communities in eastern Nebraska or western Iowa. If you do not believe me, contact Omaha's office of economic development and get the hard numbers of where the money comes from. You may be surprised at the percentage generated from outside the city limits and outside the suburbs. You may not like the stigma of Husker athletics but Omaha does benefic economically. You may also want to ask the economic development office how much money is generated on Nebraska home football game days. How many fans (and opponents) fly into Omaha, rent cars from Omaha agencies, stay in Omaha hotels, eat at Omaha restaurants, etc. In the process, Omaha gains a good reputation and picks up some very nice cash. Because of the geograhpic connection with Lincoln and the name connection with the University and the State of Nebraska, Omaha will always have a connection to NU and the rest of the state. You can try your "damndest" to change that, but why? You have stated earlier you want the best of Omaha. Why do something that will damage the city you love? If Omaha is the cosmopolitan place you claim it to be, there is room for dissenting opinions and a diversity of ideas. Embrace the diversity. There are enough economic factors limiting Omaha, Lincoln, the state of Nebraska and the middle part of the country. Why pick a fight with those that can help you?
The bottom line is that the huskers made it to the CWS. The hotels are full. The cash registers will soon be ringing and merchants will be happy. It sounds like a win/win situation to me especially if the Huskers continue to win. How could anyone in Omaha be against that?

This is true..Abeit a bit overstated..You could say the same thing abut KCMO etc etc etc..
And more accurately described, Omaha is a medium sized, mid-major metropolitan area..Certainly defined, I would not call the nations, 42nd largest city and 60th largest metro area 'small' by any means..Taking into consideration that there are 362 defined metropolitan areas in the United States as defined by the US Census bureau..

Doc-
You don't think I don't know how much money we pull in from the areas outside the metro.
Please. I have family that lives in Nebraska City (45 miles south of Omaha) and after I stayed there at the begining of this year for a few months, I know how dependant on Omaha people outside of it are. I know we rake in |expletive| loads of money from them.
Plus I do ask random people outside of Omaha and an OVERWHELMING majority of the people don't like it. They say, "We'll go for Walmart, but that's it." There are some but the most of the people in Nebraska I have found do not like Omaha. I'll have to go whereever it is the rest of you talk about where they do like it.

For what it’s worth, most outstaters (not Lincoln) I’ve talked to, don’t care for Omaha. They complain about traffic, crime, crowds and whatever. Them not caring for it though, doesn’t mean they hate it. They seem to express that they wouldn’t want to live here but don’t really think about it that much. I don’t really care for a lot of aspects of rural life. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect the people that choose to live that way. Nor do I hate them. I wish we could get over the us versus them mentality. Omahans and outstaters do have one thing in common, very conservative politics. This includes you DTO.

Thank you GoWest.
And that's a wrap on the Omaha vs Nebraska 'thread', I think all sides of this twist on an otherwise good topic have been expressed.
