That's what i said!

Im still not sure if i'd like to see that buidling remodeled or demolished..... It would be nice to have a newly built building with a possibility of shops/fast food on the first floor. but on the other hand a remodel wouldnt be bad I suppose.

True, Both would be nice but i'd settle for one out of the two. I live in MC, and would be great just to have a fast food place close by (Subway, pitapit, souperSalad, etc)

I'm thinking the author of the article is confused, they have to be talking about the parking stalls under the north tower. There's no visible access point for an underground garage.

I may circle around the building tomorrow just for fun, maybe I've missed something.

I believe there is a garage entry on the south side of the north tower.

It looks like there is a garage as per their application to be on the National Register of Historic Places

http://nebraskahistory.org/histpres/neb ... rnerPk.pdf

Subterranean Parking Garage
The site retains its underground parking structure as well as a parking lot immediately adjacent and to the east of the
buildings which appears to be historically associated with the property. The subterranean garage is part of Nicas’ original
design. It provided residential parking, also supplemented by the surface parking lot located just east of the building.
The original plans show Nicas requested a variance in 1962 for additional land north of the existing property line to
accommodate turning radius for the garage. The plans show the existing property line with an additional 25 feet of leased
land incorporating the space north of the lot line to Douglas Street. The variance was eventually allowed, because the
garage was built and extends underground to include the additional 25 feet of leased land terminating at the edge of
Douglas Street.
Both the north and south towers access the garage from their respective elevators. Garage access from the exterior is
located between the two towers. The garage is accessed by a vehicular ramp located at the center of the lot in between
the two buildings. Clearest access to the ramp is gained from Turner Park Boulevard. An overhead aluminum door
shelters the auto entrance. Upon entering the ramp descending traffic was guided one way around the underground lot in
a westerly fashion according to the plan. The garage houses approximately 62 spaces with some storage rooms and two
elevator lobbies. The spaces are arranged around the outside walls of the structure in a perpendicular fashion to the wall.
A core of spaces is located at the center of the floor plan on either side of the ramp. There is approximately 13 feet of
space between levels making for a clearance height of about 12 vertical feet in the garage. It is structurally supported by
steel columns wrapped in concrete along the east and west sides approximately 15 feet from the outside walls, while
poured in place concrete columns support the structure near the south wall. Two elevators and elevator lobbies are
located on either side of the center access drive toward the north side of the garage. The elevators float in the garage
with a drive lane between them and the wall. A stair access is located next to the elevator at the east side. These
elevators provide access to the north tower while the south tower elevators extend to a basement access. Because the
south tower elevators are inside that building they are not illustrated on the plans for the north tower. Plans show storage
spaces at the south end of the garage adjacent to the hallway connecting to the south tower.

The North Tower is the one with underground parking. A large number of the condo owners in the South Tower own underground stalls in the (condemned) North Tower. I had heard they had filed a lawsuit against the new owner of the North Tower for preventing them from utilizing them.

I never would have guessed there were 62 parking places under that place. That's surprising. The lot just doesn't seem big enough.

I am trying to remember. They put a partial fence at one time, then removed it correct? Now this is a second fence?

I drove by yesterday and they are removing strips of concrete in the parking lot and it looks like they are replacing beams in the under ground parking from the top side.

There were lights on, on the outside of the north tower tonight. They also installed some "entrance things" so that tall trucks can't go in the parking lot.

Are they starting actual construction?

I hope anything happens to make it livable.

At this point I don't need to see some massive reconstruction. A solid renovation would more than suffice.

It was a pretty basic one, but it did give an idea of how it would look when finished.

This isn't what I was talking about, but I did find this one from the Nelson Website:

I noticed the other day that asbestos removal is being conducted in the tower now. That is why there is more equipment on site.

Agreed. Lets hope they open up development for something bigger and better.

Curious question: Why was the north tower condemned in the first place? I saw something mentioned earlier in the thread about asbestos removal. Was that it?

It'll actually have to be turned into parking. Condo owners from South Tower own stalls in the North Tower's garage and lot.

Sounds like dealing with a woman, minus the welding, of course.

But to be honest, it's a pretty ugly building and I'm not so disappointed it'll be torn down. What they replace it with could be the disappointing part.

With Mutual's interest in this property's fate, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a deal in the works.

What?
from the article above "Tower's future looking up"

Omaha World Herald wrote:Mutual of Omaha, which built the neighboring Midtown Crossing development, also has entered the dispute. In March, just days after the city issued its demolition order, Mutual subsidiary East Campus Realty sued in an attempt to force the north tower's owner to demolish the property or repair and maintain it.

In its lawsuit against the city, the Turner Park Lofts partnership alleges the city's moves against the property are driven in part by "political motivations and individuals at Mutual of Omaha in its real estate division who believe that the current condition of the North Tower interferes with their marketing efforts."
Ken Cook, president of East Campus Realty, declined to comment.

The article also indicated financing for the project wasn't secure. I'm assuming the developer couldn't scrap enough funds together. You don't apply to get a property listed on the National Register of Historic Places only to tear it down.
