Glad to see they're recycling the building materials. If I remember correctly, all of the brick is "thin brick" which is only about 1/2" thick and is stuck on to sheathing and stud wall substrate, much like tile. Not much to save there, except for all of the steel.

I does seem strange to see a fairly new shopping center demolished already.....trying to remember when the place was built...1990's? But the new design will be better.
He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"

On Friday the 12th there were four or so bays still standing at the water tower end of the old buildings. By Friday night they were down. Here is what it looked like on Saturday AM

Nothing solid to base it on but I would be shocked if it came down. They will use it as part of the water system for the new facility I am betting and it is a good "sign" for the place.
(edit) just looked back at the images that TitosBuritoBarn posted the image links for the new design and the tower is shown in one image

A note on the demo. The pace of the demolition really slowed over the last three weeks IMO. Once they cleared the center area there was a lot of work going on below grade to prep fot the build. The demo dropped down to what looked like one crew rather than the multiple that were working.
I am driving by teh outlet almost daily now on my way home from work. With the Work going on at Hwy 370 / Hwy 6 right in Gretna there is NO incentive to go that way into Gretna at the busy hours.

Color me surprised, I figured this would languish like most things in the metro area for a while before if ever being completed. Guess the time, money, and effort (probably mostly money) made by the city of Gretna to get this done is showing fruits of labor. Too bad the city of Omaha couldn't somehow do the same with the Fail Street Tower and the Soon-Maybe-Hopefully-to be-rock Development near the Arena.

Should be neat when completed. I'll probably check it out.

If there was ever any doubt that they are seriouse about the schedual I am convinced. Late last week they had two cranes show up on site. Today when I went by about 20 Min ago they were using one to set steal for the first building already.

Yates, in partnership with Frank Krejci of Omaha's Century Development, the mall's majority owner, is developing the new shopping center — renamed Smart Outlets at Nebraska Crossing because it will feature software that interacts with customers while they shop — at the intersection of Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 6.

The new 350,000 square-foot Gretna mall, which will feature 70-plus outlet and factory stores, is expected to open in time for the holiday shopping season. “We're aiming for Nov. 15,” Yates said, a little later than the previous goal of Oct. 31.

No it has not. They have been working weekends and as late as 9PM that I have seen. I see yesterday that some more portable light systems looked like they were new on site so guessing there will be more late night. Most likly to finsih and cut concrete as thay look to be at a point where a lof of concrete will be poured. Unlike many retail buildings that I have watched being built it looks like the floor flatowrk will be poured before the steal goes up and they are closed in.

Wow, they aren't wasting any time on this!! I'm actually kind of excited for this development. I really do hope though that it does better than its predecessor.

It really will not take much to do better than what was there.... at least over the last 10 years.

On Thur night / Fri AM they I beleive they poured concete all night. They were poring when I went by at 7 PM. At 1:30 AM my daughter went by and they were working under the lights, and at 5:00 AM tehy were working when I left home for work. At 5 AM tehy looked to be cutting joints in some concrete that was fresh and there looked to be some that they had just finsished working and was really green yet.

http://www.omaha.com/article/20130606/N ... tlet-shops
The Gretna City Council voted Tuesday to issue $1.35 million in construction bonds related to the project and awarded a $944,000 contract to Omaha-based MBC Construction Co. Inc.

The company will repave and reconstruct Melia Road and create a new Nebraska Crossing Drive for the shopping area.

The shopping center is at the intersection of Interstate 80 and U.S. Highways 6 and 31. The developers are rebuilding the shopping center into a $112 million “smart shopping” outlet with more than 70 outlet and factory stores.

As part of the redevelopment agreement, Gretna agreed to take on several public works projects, including the road reconstruction, the addition of a storm sewer and the extension of a 16-inch water main to run down Highway 6 to serve the shopping center, City Administrator Jeff Kooistra said.

I had the wait and see postion on this all through the demo. I told anyone that asked that untill I saw new construction going up I was not going to expect anything. Once they started to pour new concrete it has been all out. I go to work at abut 5:30 each AM and many days drive by at that time. There have been a bunch of days where they worked around the clock. Basicly every saturday and some Sundays are work days and I am guessing that this is to make up for the rain days.

They just might have this thing open before Black Friday. There was stated in some earler stored that more stores would be anounced by the end of May but that has came and went but that is probably not a big deal. 28 or 30 anounced so far if I remeber correct.

The only thing that worries me is that the layout is somewhat kind of, sort of like the little town center area of L Street Marketplace, and they have had a lot of problems trying to get people to fill all the units, especially when the business insists on building their own stand-alone store.

Well I hope not because they started from ground up after they couldn't get the ends of the old layout leased. This is supposed to be a design based on what was needed to get the tenants to sign. Was supposed to have input from their future tentants. Only time will tell though I guess.

Someone pointed out to me a couple outlets that have alomst this ssame design. We were at a computer and looked at their web sites and they sure looked similar. Will have to see if I can remeber where they were.

This is what you can see from outside the fence as of July 21.

You can click through to Flickr for a larger view.

Taken from what was the entrance into the back of the old mall. This is where Hwy 6 & 31 meet. AS you can see they have now started to grade much further to the North. Guessing the new road will start to go in soon.

Adidas and Swarovski are two more additions to the Mall. This is not officially announced but noted from job recruiting ads.

Expect more to be anounced in Feb with a goal of 60 new to market stores

Still stating an October opening. That seems overly agressive to say the least.

From the OWH

When completed in late October, the new $87 million outlet mall at the intersection of Interstate 80 and Nebraska Highways 6 and 31 will have more than 60 tenants in 350,000 square feet and offer customers a fully “wired” shopping experience.

The existing 170,000-square-foot mall, built in 1993, is being readied for demolition. The replacement, which will be new from the ground up, is expected to open Oct. 31.

In May, the mall's developers — Frank Krejci of Omaha's Century Development and Rodney Yates of Arizona-based OTB Destination LLC — said they had signed leases with Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Chico's, the Gap, Lane Bryant and White House Black Market.

..................................

..............Yates, a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has a reputation for turning distressed and underperforming properties into moneymakers. He said he also is looking forward to working with Krejci on the redevelopment of Omaha's Crossroads Mall at 72nd and Dodge Streets. Krejci, who developed Oak View Mall, Brentwood Square in La Vista and other projects, purchased Crossroads in 2010 for $9.5 million.

Yates hinted that several retailers who have signed leases at the Gretna outlet mall are considering opening full-price stores at Crossroads Mall. He also indicated that Crossroads Mall will employ the customer engagement software.
