Douglas County tourism hits billion-dollar milestone

Cindy Gonzalez / World-Herald staff writer wrote:Tourism in Douglas County has become a bigger economic engine — with spending from a record number of visitors last year surpassing the $1 billion mark for the first time, according to a new economic impact report prepared for the Omaha Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“Omaha is becoming more of a destination, with big-time events,” City Council President Pete Festersen said. “In addition to the benefit to the economy, the identity and image it creates for our city is priceless.”

Working in the gallery in the old market, I am suprised how many people I talk to that come here for vacation.
Speaking of.... There was a couple in there last night from Sioux Falls. They are here celebrating their anniversary. The GLM had some sort of special meaning to them so they were a little supprised to see the mess down there.

We get a lot of the regional small towns and a decent amount from KC, Des Moines and Souix Falls. The Zoo, Old Market and Children's Museum are pretty big out of town draws plus all the concerts and sporting events pull a lot from the region, I saw somewhere that said the 2012 US Swim Trials attendees were 61% non Omahans. Most people don't spend a week, but a pretty surprising amount make a long weekend out of it.RNcyanide wrote:Really? Where do they typically come from? I know a couple from my home town - right outside Sioux Falls - that come down often to catch something at the the comedy club at VP. Or something at Stir Comcert Cove

Almost all were here for vacation. They usually say they are going to the zoo. One couple said they were here for the Dog Track. Just basically here for the weekend.
A couple where here to visit family.
