Well this is absolutely fantastic news. I am glad they listened to the neighbor's concerns about parking and went back to the drawing board. the building looks nice and will be nice accent to all the brick building at UNMC.

Beyond the additional 1,200 good-paying jobs that med center officials estimate the cancer center will create, the project is expected to spark a private housing and retail redevelopment on the edge of campus that could approach the scale of urban renewal projects such as Midtown Crossing or Aksarben Village.

If it were a city, UNMC would rank as #16, in population in Nebraska, just ahead of Lexington at 10,260. ....just a Stat for your consumption. I've always thought of UNMC as kind of a city, with its own skyline.

I looked up some random things to see where UNMC stood nationwide size wise. Nebraska Medical Center is one-ninth the employment size of the Texas Medical Center. They have over 90K employees on one gigantic campus, insane.

Impressive structure, but is it mixed use with ground level retail and no surface parking? That's what's important.

In all seriousness, I do like it and it blends in well with the surrounding buildings, yet has a striking prominence for the surrounding area. Now if we could get something on the old Steel Site within the next five years, that'll be an awesome compliment.

I think this building is going to be ~167 feet. On this page they have cross sections of the building with elevations on the side, if you take the difference from street to roof you get 167.48. Unless I am looking into it wrong.

I would think that it would be worth saving, if not only for the historical significance.

Yes, the one on the SE Corner of 42 and Emile. The one that was condemned for a while. They closed it several months back. I think they actually closed the top couple a floors even longer ago because it the structure was failing.

Hadn't heard about that. Didn't know it was falling apart. There were never in any plans to be anything but a parking garage. Maybe they will change the plans on either rebuilding bigger there, or where the new parking garage to the east is going, and put something interesting there. With the new Pharmacy School going across the street they will need parking on that side of the campus.

Leave it to UNMC, which continues to claim it is chronically short of parking, to want to tear down multiple parking garages, which cost the taxpayers multiple millions of dollars to build. And then they lay waste to acres of land along Leavenworth, paving over everything the eye can see. It is the mentality of rubes.

This one was falling down.

They changed the plans for the cancer center and they are leaving the other parking garage alone now.

UNMC is moving forward with the parking lot between Pacific Street and Marcy Street and on the east and west sides of the Field Club Trail. Flyers have gone out to property owners in the neighborhood. Work on clearing the ground is supposed to start in the next few months.

I looked through the current master plan, and all that shows up down there is a new park where the trail meets up with Leavenworth. I suppose that area could be used for temporary parking before the park is built?
