Hyok and Globochem should be given a show on the Food Network so they can fully discuss their distaste for the icky food of the mere commoner. "Night flight pizza?! Pah! If it's not flown in from Italy tis' worthless for my tastebuds!"

Sorry to trouble you for making you move posts. But I don't stand for falsehood. (unless there is a good reason for it such as when a wife asks the husband if she is as beautiful and fresh looking as she was 20 years ago). Some of the remarks recently made were demonstrably false and unfair to hard working people who deserved better.Brad wrote:Nope, I moved them to the Pizza Thread.Hyok Kim wrote:Perhaps you can delete all the posts relating to pizzas in this thread?

Please, I am far more inclusive than Globochem. I consider La Casa as decent pizza. I agree abot Orsi's, though, it's a timebomb for me. Uhhhh, that is the dumbest thing I've read all week (and I read the Omaha World Herald!) Shall I refer you back to the title of this thread: Best Pizza in Omaha. If Night Flight enters into your thinking as the best of anything, outside of sleep depriving dyspepsia, you need your head examined in a thrashing machine. Again, we are limiting the conversation to highlights of Omaha's rather limited quality pizza scene rather than indulging high fives over 2 AM shame binging; very few out of the many pizza places make an honest attempt at quality pie.MadMartin8 wrote:Hyok and Globochem should be given a show on the Food Network so they can fully discuss their distaste for the icky food of the mere commoner. On the first tier are Frank's and Dante for reasons mentioned earlier.
On the second are Pitch and Vivace. Vivace gets points for being the first to try to emulate the original "Neapolitan" style. Although the oven isn't suited to the high temperatures needed for a thin, crispy crust (as a result the dough is far too chewy, dried out and dense by comparison), many of the general attributes of good pizza remain: quality flour, san marzano tomato sauce, real fresh mozzarella. Pitch makes a far superior pie to Vivace helped along by its coal fired 900 degree oven. But often the sauce and toppings get gloopy and weird. This isn't surprising coming from the inventor of meat pellets.
On the third tier are La Casa, Mama's, and Big Fred's which are Omaha originals and although not excellent in and of themselves, they are enjoyable as reminders of childhood or heritage.
The rest barely stand apart as alternately disgusting (Goodnights or Sgt. Peffers) or utterly forgettable (Don Carmelos and Ragazzis). Selecting from this tier may have something to do with convenience or odd affinity for a particular topping, but speaks neither to the craft required to making good pizza nor the actual quality of the ingredients used.
Night Flight or Casey's as best pizza is idiotic. You'd might as well fish a frozen Tombstone Pizza out of a dumpster. Now why not call that the best pizza in Omaha?

I am sorry but I do not get why you two keep acting like its a big deal to review Night Flight, the place is CLOSED for god sakes. This would be like me writing a full page review of the 3 soft shells and cup of cheese from Taco Bell today, what the heck do you expect from Taco Bell. Night Flight served its purpose to deliver late night pizza to drunk people past 2 AM, that was it's only purpose but apparently we need a Zagats review of it from the two of you.Globochem wrote:Uhhhh, that is the dumbest thing I've read all week (and I read the Omaha World Herald!) Now yes the people who actually CALL Casey's and order a whole pizza for dinner are just crazy, if you are just going lazy at least go Pizza Hut or Dominoes.

Honestly the dumbest thing I've read is a 3 page long diatribe on while your particular taste in Pizza somehow trumps the tastes of others, and the superiority complex that goes along with. Realize that there are people out there that won't like Dante's, or whatever you choose to boast, and instead like Casey's pizza because, guess what? It tastes good to them. I don't like La Casa or Dante's, but that's just me. I don't harbor some weird need to convince Brad that La Casa doesn't taste good to me and he should think the same.
People's tastes are different, deal with it. It's okay to say you disagree, which others have done amongst themselves (including me) without looking down upon those that disagree. So frankly my, albeit sarcastic, comment stands.

I took the family to Franks Sunday to check it out. We almost didnt find the joint! (driving up from the south, you miss it sitting there in the nook). Anyway, I'll start with the bottom line, ok pizza, not much to write home about. If we lived anywhere near there we might make it again but since we dont, I doubt they will get another try. The people there were nice and super friendly, but the setting left something to be desired. Not that I require fancy mind you, but we had to ask the TV to be turned down (they said it was still up from the NE game at closing time Saturday) and also the ceiling fans to be turned down as they were creating a downright gust. We must have surprised them at 4 on Sunday. The pizza crust was quite good, but overall it was just good, not bad at all just not great either. We tried the margherita, some special with a load of things on it, and the kids had some cheese. I will say, because of hunger or taste, the kids ate like champs. The special was much better than the marg, which had a sauce that was a bit too runny for my taste. We'll have to turn our attention so some other type of food for the next taste test as my oldest boy has behavior issues when he eats dairy and my wife nearly had to kill him about an hour later. I need to find a couple places that make sandwhiches as tasty as I saw on some food network show last night, I was full and still wanted one!

Franks is by no means the best pizza in the city I.. after living in NYC for 4 years and trying most of Omaha's NY pizza offerings made the claim that Franks would be the only one that would survive in NYC even though it would still be a lower quality option but its the only place in town that makes pies like they do in the big apple.. Margherita Pizza is usually limited to the freshness of the tomatoes and its night and day different with fresh mozz vs processed mozz with fresh its heaven with processed its good nothing great.. glad you liked it!

Big Fred's Pizza has been an Omaha family favorite since 1965. A particular favorite is the "Goodie Roonie," a double-crusted pie stuffed with either Romano or mozzarella cheese and sausage or hamburger. Pies are cut into manageable-size squares instead of the traditional slice. And, if you're a Cornhusker fan, which you have to be to even enter Nebraska, you'll love the vintage Cornhusker memorabilia everywhere. 1101 S 119th St; 402-333-4414; bigfredsinc.com

We went to Pizza West last night. The pizza was OK, but the highlight of the Night was the Wings! They had great Wings.
The Spicy Garlic were my Favorite, but they were all good and had a lot of meat on them.

A sad day for my Local Pizza Rotation List. After years of enjoying Old Chicago, tonight was the last straw. They have changed too many things about their pizza, and tonight I didn't taste what I used to affectionately call my "Gary-nip" in their pizza. I don't know what the spice was, or whether it was in their crust or part of the toppings, but it satisfied me like few others. It wasn't there tonight. That, along with all their other changes, has caused O.C. to lose the coveted Blue Highlight on my local pizza list. Only a very few still retain the Blue Highlight.
I know that some on here detest Old Chicago, but if there's one thing I've learned it's that pizza preferences are highly personal. I used to consider O.C. to be among my favorites, then they began falling. Tonight they completed their descent into mediocrity, by my standards. Still, they're in my neighborhood so I won't say I'll never go there again.

I tried Davlo last night and wowie was it good.. definitely belongs in the conversation of the best in town. I haven't tasted sauce that good since I lived in NYC! My buddy who has tried the legendary places in Chi town thought it was really good but a little light on toppings.. I however thought the toppings were fine. Bill for 4 craft beers and the 14 inch Chicago house pie was 43 dollars. We were both starved and could only down 3 slices max. Very impressed with the service also.. staff was very friendly and prompt. I could tell they are really making a push for best pizza in Omaha. Staff said that typically its packed out every night but was half full last night. I give the whole experience a solid A rating! If you haven't tried it yet you owe it to yourself to make it there!Greg S wrote:I think the two best for me now are both newer. I'd go Pizzeria Davlo, and my 2nd choice would be Red Savoy's.

I have yet to try it, but after reading the reviews here, I am definitely putting it on my short list. I know that its located on 144th and Fort, but is it on the Northeast or southeast side of the intersection? The parking lot is not real well lit if you go there after dark (if I was a tenant, I'd be questioning the landlord on this). It's worth the effort though, I'd recommend the Chicago style, just know that if you do, like the real thing, takes about 40 minutes from order to table.

I had Franks tonight and it was awesome. To me it tastes the most like pizza you would have in NY/NJ around here, nice thin chewy crust, light tomato sauce and good cheese. This will be my new go to spot.

Got take out last night at Davlo and it was the best I'd had from there yet. We had Pizza West on father's day. It's always been good but thought it was even better. I totally agree on the wings at Pizza West, very very good.

I don't feel you can label one place as best. Frank's is fantastic, but so it Mangia Italiana. Two completely different pizza styles.
