McDermott Breaks BIG EAST Player of the Week Record
Creighton senior Doug McDermott garnered his seventh Player of the Week award on Monday, breaking the BIG EAST men's basketball record of six first set by Syracuse's John Wallace in 1995-96 and tied by Notre Dame's Troy Murphy in 1999-00. The Bluejays are alone in first place in the league at 11-2 after a 2-0 week.

Im ecstatic about Creighton's standing right now. Even though they will be losing Doug, Ethan and Grant, I think this succesful first year in the Big East means so much for CU basketball's future.

I have been excited about the current year for some time, and even though we are losing a fantastic group of seniors and the greatest Creighton player of all-time, the team is going to get some needed athleticism for next year with the addition of Ronnie Harrell and Leon Gilmore III (LG3).

Re: Creighton Basketball 2013-2014
I can't even believe I'm going to say this, but I think Creighton (in the long run), will be better off without guys like Wragge and McDermott, and find more balance with athleticism, while still recruiting pure shooting.
Wragge is great, but he doesn't leave the 3 point line, and he's not a physical player. McDermott is ridiculuous, but he's a once-in-a-lifetime player, and it's not great for the rest of the team to depend on that type stand-out.
As you guys mentioned, the recruits in the pipeline, look like they could accomplish that. And, hopefully, McCoach is in this for the long haul at Creighton, because the Big East doesn't have to be stepping stone conference; he could find as much success as anyone at Creighton, if they keep this up.

And the flashes from Zierden. I'm also curious about the Redshirts as well.
I, like you, honestly think Creighton will be a more athletic team next year with more speed. It'll take time for the new guys to "gel" but in two years this could be a dangerous team once more.

Not to mention what dancing into the Sweet 16 and Final Four could do for recruiting. A new practice facility, 18,000 fans in an NBA atmosphere... I read the other day admission applications have doubled since being in the BEast has gained CU some notoriety from east coast kids...

Re: Creighton Basketball 2013-2014
Btw, here is the article I had read:
BIG EAST, National Spotlight Increasing Interest in Creighton
BIG EAST, National Spotlight Increasing Interest in Creighton
Newswise — There is a perfect storm brewing at Creighton University and the institution wants to harness its power to expand our national prominence. A move to the BIG EAST, a highly favored candidate for the men’s basketball player of the year, the undergraduate professor of the year and top rankings for academic reputation and value have intersected to shine a spotlight on the university. These attention grabbing events have resulted in Creighton experiencing a 50 percent increase in undergraduate applications this year.
For Mary Chase, associate vice provost, Enrollment Management, the word she has coined to capture it all is “priceless.”
“When you have a Doug McDermott, a two-time All-American and candidate for player of the year and the undergraduate U.S. professor of the year, as well as nationally successful basketball teams, the exposure and name recognition is invaluable,” said Chase.
This national spotlight from an enrollment perspective affords Creighton an opportunity to build awareness in markets where historically the University has not had significant name recognition.

Passing up Hansbrough was important, since how many scorers will stay four years in college in the future. Most will be one and done's and never reach the 3,000 plateau. Doug's place in history might be cemented for a while.cdub wrote:Some of those numbers, with fewer games, are amazing. Some of those old guys were really filling it up!

Re: Creighton Basketball 2013-2014
Hopefully CU has at least 9 more games left... (4 regular, 3 Big East, Hopefully at least 2 NCAA). Averaging 25 points per game, that would put him at 3113, good for 5th all time. I am not sure he will keep the 25 per game average come tournament time.Coyote wrote:Passing up Hansbrough was important, since how many scorers will stay four years in college in the future. Re: Creighton Basketball 2013-2014
Its definitely less common for good scorers to stay around long enough to crack this elite company. Even in Dougies case, absent his dad as coach and a major conference move, he wouldn't have stayed either I dont think. Anyone else who does make it will likely look a lot more like Doug or Hansborough though. Guys who are great but not the type people fawn over drafting after one or two years, thus they stick around.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2013-2014
As I watched the CU-Marquette game, I kept thinking how special this team is. I know in years past, this game would have been very difficult for Creighton. When they got a 10 point lead and it was narrowed down to 4, the Jays responded and never looked back. I am so amazed at how calm this team looks. Dougie just stepped up and hit that deep 3 with a guy right in his face and didn't flinch. Their body language is so much better this year. They know that they can beat just about anyone and this year it shows. I am sad though knowing we only have 2 home games left to see this team. What a great year it has been so far.

That second loss to Seton Hall was surprising and yes probably did them in, especially with BYU beating Gonzaga last night. Then you have to wonder how much Marcus Smart's suspension will affect the committee's look at OSU, with still a 41 RPI after losing 8 of 9.iamjacobm wrote:Georgetown just played their way out most likely. Even though I don't like him...here is a quote from Dirk Chatelain:
Unfortunately for Miles, the crowd at Pinnacle Bank Arena has a ways to go before it reaches the CenturyLink level of volume and enthusiasm. I was sitting next to Lincoln radio host John Gaskins on press row and, at one point during a Nebraska run, I said rhetorically, “Why are they sitting down!”

Enthusuam... I agree. Way to many newbies as I just posted in the Husker thread. Loud, I have to disagree. I have been to CU games and it is loud. IT has been as good and better in Lincoln a few times this year. The Husker fan needs to learn to sustain it but to say not loud is crazy or completly biased. My Bro was testing me during some breaks in play last night against PSU and siad th eESPN crew doing the game was saying on the air it was the loudest arean the had bene in this year. Now is that 100% true, prob not, but it leads one to beleive it isnt a funeral home eather.
