Look into what Richard Heinberg and James Howard Kunstler have to say, among many others.

In particular, listen to what Kunstler has to say starting at about 7:55 on this podcast. It's only 10 or 15 minutes long, and then he talks a little more later on if you're interested. But this clip kind of sums up what we're discussing.

That really, really sticks out like a sore thumb. Beautiful building most certainly, but it does not blend it well with the surrounding area at all. I suppose in time it may fill in, but for right now it's just odd.

Perhaps, but other beautiful buildings also looked a little out of proportion with their surroundings when first completed.

Hence my qualifying comment

"I suppose in time it may fill in....."

Right now, it looks odd. If it becomes as iconic as the Empire State Building, consider me speechless. That is a neat shot of NYC, though.....saving that to my computer.... thanks!

I wouldn't be surprised if OKC gets a condo tower and a new convention center hotel that goes ^ rather than <> like ours within a decade.

It will take some time. The tower is so tall compared to the others. Can't imagine that the if a condo tower or convention hotel is built that they will be any where close to this thing in size. I know there are some that are height obsessed but that's the thing when you build one that is so tall compared to the others, it will stand out and look out of place for quite some time.

I can't speak for anyone else, but that tower gets me all boned up, and I'm not even a size/height queen. |expletive|, throw it in the middle of a corn field, for all I care.

If it's not the size what is it about that tower that gets you so fired up?

It's off-topic, but I love the capitol building in Lincoln with the tall central tower surrounded by low-rise floors on the rest of the block. It seems to symbolize Nebraska so well, with the image of a few cities surrounded by sweeping plains.

It's personality. I don't know, I can't explain it. But everytime I see it, I get butterflies and my nads shrivel.

That is an incredibly attractive tower. One of the best of the decade so far.

Well. Devon just merged with a firm in Houston and the HQ will move there. They say there will still be a strong presence in OKC but obviously a loss for the city.

We lost Conagra a while ago. Their headquarters campus at the time was only 27 years old. The Devon Energy Center is only about 14. This is still bad. While I don't exactly like what Oklahoma has been doing as a state, I still recognize that many of the people there are just like us. We're both geographically centered major cities that get ignored by the media. We could have very well been victims of the bombing, too. I don't like that this went through. I hope they have a better time dealing with this than we did with Conagra leaving. Northern Natural Gas merged with Houston Natural Gas to form Enron, and then they moved out. Both Conagra and Enron will either fall or will fall victim to the Omaha Curse anyway.

I have in-laws south of OKC near Norman. (My brother also moved his family to Tulsa decades ago so I have and do spend a lot of time in the state) I think OKC will be OK, there's a ton of money down there with oil. They've also done some just amazing things with their downtown through the MAPS program. I was really unimpressed with their downtown when I first started going regularly in 1996. Since then it's been amazing with the addition of the canal, light rail, arena (with a second one on the way), ballpark, Devon tower, so many hotels, the Okana Casino and waterpark, retail (including a large Bass Pro Shop in their downtown), row houses, condos and apartments. Plus the Riversport area they built that will host Olympic events in 2 years.

For their economy, Tinker AFB is growing too. When a large GM plant closed a couple decades ago. The government bought it and expanded the base. From what I hear (I worked on Tinker in September, my employer has about 400 employees on base) they are going to expand again. Tinker has some land east of the base nicknamed little Tinker, and supposedly they are in the process of buying all the land between the two for expansion. They already have grown to close to 30k employees on base since the expansion with the old GM plant.

Regardless, losing a HQ like Devon is never a good thing.
